Do you have any tips or words of encouragement for someone just entering the medical field of study with the desire to get a PHD and MD? I switched majors from architecture and feel a little late to the game in discovering my passion for the medical sciences. I find your blog very inspiring and would love to have your more experienced take on my situation Many Thanks❣️
Hello there Kordelia!
First I just want to say how proud I am of you making the difficult decision to switch majors from such a different field in order to pursue your passion. I’m sure it was a hard journey at times, and I admire you so much for fiercely staring down those obstacles!
I don’t have personal experience with MD/PhD dual programs, or with the MD side of things, but I hope I can help with at least the PhD side, and just grad school in general. To further the disclaimer, I only have experience with PhD programs in biology/life sciences in the US. if your program is in another country, some of my advice may not be applicable (but I hope a lot of it is!)
Here are some of my favorite advice posts (some from other people) that I hope will help:
How to think like a biologist
Things no one tells you (at least no one told me) about grad school in the life sciences
Advice on grad school from a Reddit post (this one can apply to almost all grad programs)
How to deal with imposter syndrome
How I deal with feeling burnt-out
7 pieces of advice for your 1st year in grad school
How I stay organized in grad school
How to come up with a research project: here and here, and more specific to a PhD thesis project, here
How I handle constructive criticism (ie. not taking it personally)
How I deal with the pressures of grad school
I also have a collection of advice posts for med school (from other blogs) here that I think will be worth checking out
I hope these help! If you have any more questions, you know where to find me! My private chat is also always open.
I wish you the best of luck, and an amazing grad school adventure.
hey everyone! I will be starting grad school next month, and I’m getting really nervous about the workload. I’m going for my PhD in neuroscience. does anyone have any advice for their first year of grad school? I don’t want to overwork and get burnout.
researching: Great! Amazing! Love learning! Finding out new things! Cool beans! Fielwork! Books! Data! Wowie!
writing article: Hmmmmm not as fun for sure but like. The process. helps a little to put things into words. 5/10 i guess it’s o k
editing article: I crave the sweet release of death. Endless years I have suffered - tell me when it will end? Language is meaningless and I have lost sight of my path. Here alone in the desert I wander, searching the empty expanses of my mind for a synonym. How to tempt Word into formatting my diagrams without ruinous consequence? I am the master of my own garden of sorrow.
writing the cover letter to go with the article submission: somehow f u c k i n g w o r s e
research, phdblr, gradblr, text, writing, paper writing
Don't stop when you're tired! Stop when it's done 💪🏻

here’s a little compliation of photos from the last few weeks ✨
I decided to redecorate and clean my table 🤓
my college sent out a document of advice for graduate freshers from the Oxford University Counselling Service and I thought it had some really good reminders in it.
Lovely, sun-filled room is perfect for plants. (The lucky lady who lives here says, “ Y’all… I am never going to get over how privileged I am to be living in this room.”)

Morning all, the seaguls screaming outside my window woke me up at 6am 👌
different ways you can study
╰ exam questions/practice questions
╰ rewriting notes
╰ grab a textbook and highlighter (only important stuff!!)
╰ bullet pointing notes (use funky arrows or pretty heart bullets)
╰ reading over a page for 2 minutes then trying to recall as much as you can on paper - repeat (very effective)
╰ watching educational videos/documentaries
╰ flashcards (2 types) - you can either write a word with the definition on the back or do a full subtopic on a flashcard for portable revision
╰ plain reading - this is underrated but reading simple articles or just reading over your notes is considered studying too !!
╰ teaching - talking to a pet or a person or even a wall, trying to teach them what you’re learning helps retain the information and get your brain working

- - orange tea and constant paper revision - -
Amid all the panic over the corona virus, I just wanna say that I’m keeping prayers for the students who are being negatively impact by their school’s decisions to close and clear out bc of the virus
For first generation and low income students who don’t have the funds to book a flight and ‘just go home’
For those to rely on work study to maintain themselves and even help their families
For LGBTQ+ students and those with unstable homes with no safe place to go home to
For the custodial workers and employees of schools who are working overtime
And for so many others.... I know these are difficult times and trying circumstances and I hope you all are okay <3
I got a fellowship from one of the grad schools I applied to 😭😭😭😅😅😅😅
