watching fariya faraji's video essay on nolan's odyssey & the western perception of greek culture and it's really good and he concisely pulls together so many good points & it's also making me unspeakably sad because the iliad & the odyssey would be such interesting texts to adapt into films but now both of the opportunities have been squandered by big western filmmakers. imagining how powerful and beautiful those films could have been if the creative direction behind them had recognised the links and similarities between ancient greek culture and west asian and north african "aesthetics" and traditions rather than superimposing this northwestern european narrative of greece being the birthplace of western culture and all the misconceptions and white supremacist ideas that come from that. the warped revisional aesthetic and artistic approach to ancient greece and in particular homer's epics is so painful, asia minor greece wasn't just a proto-roman empire, and there are direct parallels between the odyssey and the epic of gilgamesh that would make for a much more interesting artistic emphasis if only a director had the guts to lean into the fact that greece was first and foremost an eastern mediterranean country before it was ever "european"

and obviously one adaptation of the odyssey coming out now doesn't mean it can never be done again but christopher nolan is one of THE Big Name Anglophone Directors of the 21st century and he has an established narrative filmmaking style that COULD be interesting for an epic like the odyssey that happens non-linearly and follows a lot of different characters through the lens of one omniscient impersonal narrator (the epic orator as the camera!!!!!), but he had to take this broad appeal, wide audience, big platform opportunity to be the first adaptation of one of the oldest and most famous stories, and RUIN it by following in the traditions of his fellow white western directors and be kind of annoyingly revisionist and white supremacist and painfully incurious and unoriginal in his interpretation of ancient greek civilisation as staunchly european WHATEVER. someone else better make a good version of this movie in like a decade or i'll be sad
