wait ur liam/tal tunnel vision post is so relatable and something i’ve been thinking about in fandom for a bit now, especially after m9 animated came out. like i noticed liam and tal kinda always create that conventionally appealing “fandom sweetheart” type character that wears their trauma on their sleeve, so naturally they’re the characters that always get away with being assholes. the fact that molly was unironically remembered as being a flawless moral compass despite how much of a genuinely condescending asshole he was at times has been such an irreparable fandom perspective that his counterpart in the animated series is literally just his fanon interpretation. (it’s so interesting revisiting early c2 after s1 came out and realizing a lot of the qualities molly was remembered for was actually fjord most of the time, he was just less loud about it).
and i don’t think any liam or taliesin characters are bad by any means, i think caduceus and caleb in particular were great and they’re both very good players as well and seem like great dudes. but the older i’ve gotten the more i feel like the women and travis are more subtle, genuine and nuanced when playing. and sam falls somewhere in the middle, where i think he has these really great and genius ideas and moments, but he struggles with never knowing when to just let a bit die.
agree agree agree. i will say that i do prefer the animated mollymauk, and i understand that absence makes the heart grow fonder and that probably played into the nein at least remembering molly as a better person than he actually was. the fandom, though, definitely had trouble viewing molly and caleb with the same scrutiny they had for fjord and beau. the amount of fanfics and posts i've seen making fjord out to be The Asshole, not just to caleb (high richter arc) but also to nott when she tried to steal his academy letter when really it was MOLLY who charmed her....
i do really love the tense dynamic between nott and fjord, mostly becasue they're obvious foils and they remind each other too much of themselves to really like each other. the problem is when people treat caleb as a Sad Boy who Can Do No Wrong with fjord as the villain. fantasy racism bleeding into fan takes much?
in the end I think watching laura, ashley, marisha and travis is just the most rewarding because of their subtle character work, and also, their team mentality. sam is also often good at this, but for me doesn't necessarily fall into either category.
