there are two genres of wylan van eck in fanfic and i love them both, but they are two wildly different characters.

there’s wylan that is horrible at picking up on social cues and always comes off a little bit off-putting and unsettling because he tries to copy other people in social settings and just isn’t perfect at it.

and then there’s wylan that is too good at reading social cues. he can read people like a book and has been able to since he was little, and can play any character he needs to perfectly. he can be the quiet, scared novice in the barrel, or he can be the mercher’s son who won’t back down from a bargain.

both are incredible and i love both, but it’s so interesting to see the different ways we all view wylan.

book one wylan is so fun because we never know his inner thoughts and he’s kinda unhinged. swings wildly between “kaz don’t kill that guy” and “we could wake them.” sings once. looks shocked when the bombs he made work. flirts. truly unreadable from an outside perspective.

and then you get book two wylan and you realize that every decision he’s made is entirely spur-of-the-moment and panicked and he exists in a constant state of fear and it’s like oh. yeah that makes sense

when i was 17, i ended my relationship with my abuser and lost almost every friendship i had. i was on meds that were horrible for me. i almost flunked out of my freshman year of college. there were a lot of days that i was certain would be my last.

i turn 21 in two hours. i celebrated my birthday over the weekend and got to fill my home with friends who love me. i’m on new meds. i have accommodations that allow me to get through school. i dream about my future.

i think back to 13, 15, 17 year old me a lot. how badly she was hurting all the time. how many bad decisions she made. but god am i proud of her for every time she got out of bed or brushed her teeth. for every decision she made to stay. because now i get to be 21 with a whole life ahead of me.

i still hurt a lot. depression is as much a part of me as my lungs or my heart, and i still haven’t accepted that part of me. but it’s a lot easier to deal with when you allow yourself to ask for help and to find the friends that really know you and care about you.

for a long time, i dreaded my birthday. another year alive wasn’t something i was thrilled about. but in two hours i’m going to wake up as a 21 year old, and it won’t be the end of the world. it’ll be another day to live and pet my cats and see the sun and hear my friends laugh. and if that isn’t something to look forward to, what is?

call me crazy but choosing to draw the character who was forced into prostitution at the age of 14 in a very revealing outfit and a significantly more sensual position than all of the other characters (especially the men) seems like a wild misunderstanding of the story and the character (and just inappropriate)
