Doctor Who | 4.11 - Turn Left
Cabin Pressure by Kmadden2004
The Addams Family renting out rooms in their huge mansion cheaply to broke college students.
The students digging it because the craziness and the bugs are pretty much the same as any other dorm house. Also, Morticia and Gomez treat them all like visiting cousins, not like tenants to abuse and exploit.
One of the tenants is a creative writing major and Gomez and Morticia house them up in the tower because of the quiet and the inspiring view
They’re supposed to be working on a typical coming-of-age story but after living with the Addams for just a week the project is becoming a horror-Gothic-romance
They go to their room after classes one day and find Thing correcting the grammar errors in the manuscript with a red pen
and yeah, the students pay roughly market value for their rooms, but that doesn’t stop gomez from shouting “capital idea!” and handing them wads of cash when they tell him about their weekend plans or what they’re researching, so they basically end up living there for free
In the same vein, half the them have to turn into exceptional fencers, because Gomez just doesn’t give a shit, and if he sees you in the library, its fucking Sword Fighting Time.
Fester and Pugsley find out one of the college students is trying to get into chemistry and woo boy, there has never been a faster study of how to counter various acidic chemical reactions due to “water” balloons in campus history.
Morticia and Grammy are keeping the horticulturalists on their toes with their Black Tulip/Rose hybrids, which can flick their barbs a foot away from their stem system. But it’s fine, one of the kids has managed to breed Aloe with the anti venom.
Lurch makes sandwiches for everyone who’s too much of a coward for Grammy’s cooking. Any music major will find him looming over them, utterly stone faced as they practise until they finish, when he’ll smile, and slowly applaud.
And the spookiest thing of all
Wednesday and Thing will find your thesis. They will critique it in every way imaginable.
There is no escape.
I especially love the idea of Gomez spotting a student in the library, throwing a sword at a startled student, shouting, “En garde!” and lunging at him/her with a sword of his own.
Student (later in life), when asked how she jumps from quietly doing research to handling a sudden influx of ER cases so quickly and easily, says, “When you have to snap out of deep concentration on biochem to fight for your life then get back to biochem without losing your train of thought…you learn or you die.”
This has made me laugh so hard-

Pillowfort.social (An Updated Breakdown)
Alright, strap yourselves in because this post is going to be long, informative, and thorough.
Back in September 2018, I answered an ask with my thoughts on Pillowfort, but A LOT has changed since then and I’ve gone from clueless Pillowfort baby to experienced, knowledgeable user. Pillowfort has become my social media home after 11 years of being on the internet and I want everyone to have a chance to experience what I have experienced there. So I thought I’d make a new post for 2019 letting you guys know what’s up!
Disclaimer: This post is not sponsored by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Pillowfort Staff in any way. I just have a special interest in Pillowfort and want to see it succeed!
In this post, I’ll be covering (in order):
The History of Pillowfort
An overview of its awesome features
A way you can join for FREE (with a Google Form)
And some helpful resources for getting started on Pillowfort
Btw, Pillowfort’s official Tumblr is @pillowfort-social. They also have a Twitter and a Facebook page.

In midwinter cold and hard, the stars glitter and sparkle. Everyone is asleep on this lonely farm, deep in the winter night. The silver moon is a wanderer, snow gleams white on pine and fir, snow gleams white on the roofs. The tomte alone is awake.
(Victor Ryberg, 1881)
Illustrations by Harald Wyberg of the Nordic folklore character, the tomte. The little fellow potters around farms at night, looking after animals, cleaning up, fixing broken fences, generally protecting the grounds. Offend him however, and he’ll become a little pest.
Such great illustrations. Look at the cat, strolling along, curiously following the gnome on his nightly rounds. I grew up on a farm actually, and used to imagine such little creatures living behind the barn, where the sun never shone.
“As early as the 1920s, researchers giving IQ tests to non-Westerners realized that any test of intelligence is strongly, if subtly, imbued with cultural biases… Samoans, when given a test requiring them to trace a route form point A to point B, often chose not the most direct route (the “correct” answer), but rather the most aesthetically pleasing one. Australian aborigines find it difficult to understand why a friend would ask them to solve a difficult puzzle and not help them with it. Indeed, the assumption that one must provide answers alone, without assistance from those who are older and wiser, is a statement about the culture-bound view of intelligence. Certainly the smartest thing to do, when face with a difficult problem, is to seek the advice of more experienced relatives and friends!”
— Jonathan Marks - Anthropology and the Bell Curve (via mgrable)
If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a million times. IQ tests measure how well someone takes IQ tests and that is it.
A young paleontologist may have discovered a record of the most significant event in the history of life on Earth.
hey, @bunjywunjy - this might be your jam (and any other dinosaur enthusiasts, it’s a heck of a read)
man that’s not just a heck of a read it’s fuckin GROUNDBREAKING is what it is!
this dude actually found a large fossil deposit that was created not just close to, but actually DURING THE K-PG EXTINCTION EVENT.
IT’S LITERALLY A WINDOW BACK IN TIME TO THE CHICXULUB IMPACT, AND TURNS OUT IT WAS WORSE THAN ANYTHING WE COULD POSSIBLY HAVE IMAGINED
it’s a geologic snapshot of the apocalypse.
reading the full article is certainly a trip, and to summarize for those who are intimidated by longer reads:
- chicxulub is the given name for the meteor that struck/initiated the event
- the paleontologist within is described as making groundbreaking discoveries of multiple species every day, but many of his peers discount him because they’re grouchy old dudes he accidentally had a fragment of a turtle bone involved in a larger reconstruction of a fossil this one time and they won’t let him live it down.
- the extinction event was so fast and so destructive, this guy describes this particular dig-site as being so densely layered with dead and dying creatures, there is a lot of organic tissues that have been preserved, and he is able to even discern that many of the marine and freshwater fish may have still been alive as they were buried due to molten glass being found in their gills, implying they were still attempting to breathe.
- they looked into exactly when and how this could have happened, having freshwater and marine animals stacked on top of mammals and larger dinosaurs (including an amazing deinonychus forearm discovery he was able to match to feather fossils he was finding atop the pile), and rather it being the initial tsunami, they are fairly sure that it was caused by a seiche of catastrophic proportions, which would have been set off within the first hour of the event. denser and larger creatures sunk to the bottom, leaving lighter debris like leaves, small fish, feathers, and molten glass on the surface.
summary: terrifying!
This is fucking incredible
Holy SHIT!
Here’s a famous book snippet describing how feasible that we could find dinosaur fossils on the moon.
@paleogay
Adding this, since I didn’t know the word and pronunciation
so, yeah, the Caribbean Sea seiched up outta its bed and walloped the land with a deluge of sea creatures right after the impact apocalypse

DINOSAURS OVER THE YEARS
This is a series of posters I made to show how our perception of Dinosaurs and other animals of the mesozoic changed over the years. These and few more are featured in a Youtube video you can watch HERE
this art is available for prints, t-shirts and other goods HERE
http://mariolanzas.tumblr.com/
so this is really cool for a number of reasons!! but the sociology one is what’s got my brain going.
Obvs our understanding of dinosaurs has changed as we got to learn more about them and got better techniques for reconstructing fossils and shit but!!! I wonder just how much of the ‘dinosaurs are animals’ comes from people growing up with them?
like. if you look at the 1800s reconstructions, they’re mean! They’re big scary monsters. they look like they came right out of a medieval bestiary. but no one really knew what a dinosaur was in the 1800s; they were New and Exciting, so much so that they got a whole exhibit at the Crystal Palace if I remember right.
but by the 2010s literally everyone who studies dinosaurs has just … grown up with them? they’re a thing that’s existed in the world that you can learn Cool Facts about that died a long time ago. they’re part of the background noise of earth from the time you’re, like, three years old.
i wonder just how much of the transformation dinosaurs have gone through- from MONSTER to “thing you might see in your back garden”- is just because people have grown up with dinosaurs.
hang on what the hell is this about tall stegosaurus
Can we talk about the Elasomosaurus being the freaking Loch Ness Monster?
i didnt even read the post because as soon as i saw this dude i needed to put sunglasses on him
At some point someone realized “oh shit, we put elasmosaurus on backwards”
