Obviously Velma sucks but if we do ever make a more adult Scooby Doo I want a semi realistic period piece from the late 60s where the Scooby Gang are draft dodgers and hippies that just happen to stumble into the crime fighting business because there is just a fresh stream of con artists when youâre drifting town to town in a van.
Freddie and Daphne start it all. Instead of showing up at boot camp when drafted, Fred Jones got the van he bought with his summer job and ran off. Daphne, his girlfriend (who frankly has the least strong feelings about Vietnam but for gods sake are they not taking Freddie there) runs along to be supportive and to get away from her strict, stuffy family.
Velma catches wind of Fred and Daphneâs plan a few days before it happens. They invite her along but she has to consider it. A staunch feminist and the brightest girl in school, she has the most to lose if she leaves. However, she grows embittered by the fact sheâs never gonna get into her dream college since it doesnât admit women, and decides to go along. Besides, if Fred and Daphne leave without her, there wonât be anyone like minded in their hometown for Velma to be friends with.
Shaggy wasnât originally part of the group, but they find him and Scooby hitchhiking and pick him up. The gang learn he has similar circumstances to Fred for running away from home, being a conscientious objector who ran off when they tried to put him in a non combative position instead. He opposed even this as it still meant he would be part of the war machine. He comes bearing plenty of 8 track tapes and some real good pot, so heâs welcomed along happily.
Along the way they become friends and use their combined skills to solve cases of supposed hauntings. Every single one is shown to be some kind of capitalist fraud.
people who havenât read the witcher books are missing out because in âsword of destinyâ geralt and dandelion (jaskier) climb into bed together and have a heart-to-heart that ends in both of them reading the other for absolute filth. itâs literally amazing
dandelion: "Do you know what your problem is? You appear to be something that youâre not. You flaunt your otherness, what you consider to be your abnormality. You impose this upon yourself. (âŚ) What difference does it make that your reflexes are faster, that your pupils become vertical slits in the sun, that you can see in the dark like a cat and that you can cast whatever spells you know? What do I care?â
geralt:Â âYouâre nothing but a cynic, a disgusting womanizer, and a liar. Nothing about that, believe me, is truly complex. Good nightâ
dandelion @ geralt:Â insightful thoughtful analysis that comes to a loving and compassionate conclusion

the problem with sorting fics by kudos, is that many people have bad taste
I think everyone has both "hard" headcanons (things that are so integral to your understanding of a story that you can't enjoy content that contradicts them), and "soft" headcanons (things that are mutable, where you aren't strongly attached or you're open to alternate interpretations) and if you aren't sure if something is one or the other you can just read a fic where the author disagrees with you and see whether you react with "Huh, that's interesting" or "I have been overcome with a creeping sense of existential wrongness."

Happy 10th anniversary to this, the most reblogged comic I ever created.
every day i am percievedâ˘ď¸
There is a reason for this though!
The original tweet summarizes it pretty well. Fanfic tends to be popular among certain types of neurodivergent people (aka people most likely to read excessively as a child, and have burnout as an adult) for the same reasons that we tend to hyperfixateâneurochemical signaling (I hope Iâm using that phrase correctly). What I mean is, for people who are really dependent on changes in dopamine/serotonin/neurotransmitter levels, who have low levels or wonky neural reward systems (perhaps the most common types of neurodivergence)âŚpeople like us rely on dependable external sources of those neurochemicals. In order to function, we spend a lot of our free time trying to level out our brain chemistry using things that can reliably bring us a steady stream of joyful moments (rewards) without costing too much of the mental effort that is already in short supply.Â
significantly:Â the investment of reading has to be balanced with a steady âreturn on investmentââand this return has to start fairly quickly. because again, we donât have a lot of attention/energy to invest on tiring things. we have perpetual âlow batteriesâ in that regard.
that doesnât mean these stories are âsimple,â or that they lack complexity or valueâonly that the reward has to come in short regular intervals, and it has to have a low âupfront cost.â these stories are only âeasyâ to read in the sense that the effort we put into them is rewarded in a timely manner. which is why fanfic stories are so perfectly formulated for neurodivergent readersâthey are often beautifully written, but skip a lot of the upfront costs (of introducing new characters, of world-building, of getting the audience emotionally connected to the story elements).
the nature of fanfiction is that the reader has a pre-existing relationship with this world and these characters. thatâcombined with the shorter average length of ficsâmeans that fan fics very quickly start rewarding the reader in a way that traditional fiction struggles to. thatâs not a bad thing! and maybe itâs something more traditionally published writers should be paying attention to.
Fanfic, as a genre, has been uniquely helpful and accessible to many neurodivergent readers who would otherwise struggle to immerse themselves in stories. Iâm glad so many of you have found a way to love and enjoy reading again! The important thing is that you are spending time inside stories you loveâthe way those stories are published or presented to the world is just one detail. The fact that you find joy in the process of reading (or listening!) to storiesâthat is what matters.
I feel understood đĽ°
a bunch of people have reblogged this with the default âi feel called outâ reactionâŚ.and i know when we say that we mean it tongue-in-cheekâŚ.but this comment sorta blew my mind & shifted my perspective up and to the left a little thank youâĽ
Oh, you better not, especially for those Russians. Oh, yeah. Theyâre the⌠theyâre the worst, right?
i feel like shadow and bone s2 is a really good example of the impact of netflix cancelling shows left right and centre is having. because they're not sure they're going to get another season, so the creators try and jam everything they wanted to include in this one.
like with all the crows' character arcs being sped up. so many of the favourite moments from the books that they knew people really wanted to see, but if they didn't include it this season they may never get the chance.
