I've never really talked about this, but I have been dealing with a lot of really mean comments and stuff, and the thing is I've dealt with these sort of comments for my entire time on the internet, and I've just dealt with them quietly. I have really thick skin so stuff doesn't really affect me all that much, I learned in school to just ignore bullying to make it go away but I'm tired of doing that. I shouldn't have to hide these negative feelings, I'm just a teen trying to have fun and be happy online as a fish. I don't have the best advice or anything, but anyone else out there who's dealing with bullying, it's okay to feel sad because of it. Don't take anything they say to heart, but repressing how you feel like what I have been doing is not good, it's better to speak out. I'm very sleepy so I'm going to go to bed now I'm sorry if this has bad grammar

Things that are spiritually abusive

Telling people that if God isn’t answering they’re prayers it’s because they aren’t praying properly

Forcing people to conform to gender roles for their eternal benefit

Saying that one living person has all the answers to spiritual/religious questions and must be obeyed

Telling people that God will eternally punish them if they don’t do/believe what you tell them to

Telling people that God will eternally punish other people and that you are responsible for that if you don’t evangelize to them

Hell in general, really, but those two forms are the most toxic

Expecting people to fast to the point where it threatens their lives

Teaching people that they must reject science in order to believe in God

Hope it’s okay to add to this. This post makes me feel real validated by listing specific forms of spiritual abuse/toxicity and and I thought I’d add more.

Blaming people for their own abuse, oppression, illness, etc. because they aren’t praying hard enough, are too sinful, etc.

Telling people who have been abused, raped, assaulted, etc. that they need to forgive the ones who hurt them and that they are sinful or to fault if they don’t

Cutting people off from financial support, shelter, food, social support, etc. to prevent or punish them for challenging the religion

Withholding education from children in the name of religion (teaching creationism but not allowing the child to learn about evolution, abstinence and purity culture, etc.)

Teaching kids that the world outside of the religious group is dangerous, wicked, empty and meaningless, etc. or restricting access to it

Withholding medical treatment in the name of religious healing

The entire concept of sin - the concept that you are so inherently horrible that you deserve to be eternally punished for existing without dedicating yourself to a god

Forcing people to wear, do, say, or be certain things by telling them that they are sinful and will be punished if they do not

Out there in the world today there are thousands of kids being punished in one form or another because they don’t want to go to church. 

If religion is so wonderful why does it cause so much pain?

I wonder if anyone will ever be able to quantify the effects of someone being turned into an advertisement.

I remember arguing with my mom and sister about shaving. I refuse to shave (I’m clumsy, razors hurt, and the fact men don’t have to do it told me long ago that it ain’t about hygiene). They directly made personal presentation about making the church look good.

And, to be fair to them, the church had made it about the church first.

To this day, I can obsess about what my clothes “say” about me. I hate it.

I remember being told over and over again in talks and casual conversation to be “more cheerful.” I’m not much of a smiler. Smiles should mean something.

They said it was about gratitude.

But remember the old story about how people would meet a ridiculously happy Mormon family and would want to know what made them different? Made them happy?

New subscribers make more money than just gratitude.

They made a basic human expression about advertising for them.

I remember how they would talk about gaining testimonies “in the bearing of it.” I remember how I often didn’t bear my testimony because I wanted it to mean something. I wanted to believe what I said I believed.

But how will people know you’re Mormon if you don’t endlessly talk about it?

What I wore, what I felt, and what I believed was all about spreading the church.

And I clashed because I wanted those things to be personally meaningful.

I relate to the smiling thing. I was told a lot to smile more so people would see me as happy, and happy in the church. The problem was... I have depression, and it was super bad in the church. I never wanted to smile. It took so much energy.

Mormons smile a whole fucking lot. And honestly it’s kind of creepy sometimes, and super offputting. They are definitely trained to smile as often as possible.

Mormon Modesty is Bullshit

The rules for Mormon dress are the following, from the pamphlet For the Strength of Youth: 

Clothes 

Through your dress and appearance, you can show that you know how precious your body is. You can show that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ and that you love Him.

That blouse tells me you hate Jesus!

Immodest clothing is any clothing that is tight, sheer, or revealing in any other manner. Young women should avoid short shorts and short skirts, shirts that do not cover the stomach, and clothing that does not cover the shoulders or is low-cut in the front or the back.

Hey, at least I can see that face! Oh, crap still getting boners! Young men should also maintain modesty in their appearance. Young men and young women should be neat and clean and avoid being extreme or inappropriately casual in clothing, hairstyle, and behavior. They should choose appropriately modest apparel when participating in sports.  Um…

I can almost see that guy’s balls. Well, good to see the Lord’s school is upholding the Lord’s standards of dress. The fashions of the world will change, but the Lord’s standards will not change.

Yeah, Mormons totally have that Jesus look. It’s cool Mormons wear robes and grow hair like hippies. Wait, that’s not what Mormons look like at all. Probably the guy on the right in the above picture is much closer to the Mormon Jesus’ own standards today. You can’t even have a beard at Brigham Young University. Who, by the way, looks like this:

Do not disfigure yourself with tattoos or body piercings.  What about the people who are born disfigured? Why did the Lord damage their bodies which are sacred temples of the Lord? What about physical altering accidents, war wounds, etc.? Are they ugly or in sin? Are tattoos evil because they are too exciting? I think the key to Mormon immodesty is to dress as boring as possible.  Young women, if you desire to have your ears pierced, wear only one pair of earrings.

Yes! This makes sense. Wait, it goes against the sentence right before this one. Men can’t have piercings, women can have one pair of piercings only in the ears. Got it! The Lord really isn’t a fan of piercings and revealing clothing, I guess. I wonder why? Maybe this:

Your dress and appearance now will help you prepare for the time when you will go to the temple to make sacred covenants with God. Ask yourself, “Would I feel comfortable with my appearance if I were in the Lord’s presence?”  

My clothes will help me get to heaven? I’m glad the Lord’s standards never change. On that note here’s a spiritual thought- “For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.” - 1 Samuel 16:7

Here we go. Now this is Mormon modesty.  

Hey wait, that’s the those weirdos from the break off sect of mainstream Mormonism. Mormons hate that people associate these fundamental Mormons with their Mormonism. The reaction to being related or mistaken for them is “Yuck! Very offensive.” This next picture clarifies the appropriate modesty values:

There, that’s better. That little girl’s exposed shoulders was TOO SEXUAL? Fuck you Mormonism. Even if not followed in person, the picture has to, at least, uphold the standards through the wonderful advancements in Photoshop sorcery, apparently. This is used for their teaching study guides seen here.

And let’s not forget about the time the Utah high school brought down the powers of heaven to fight the evil immodest clothing of the kids fashion in their yearbook pictures-

It’s extremely offensive to impose these perverse values on the kids. Especially ironic is this girl’s scenario as explained from an article in the Salt Lake Tribune- The tattoo is a simple line of script Baum chose — after consulting the school dress code — to remind her of her journey out of difficult times during her childhood.It reads, ‘I am enough the way I am.’ ‘My tattoo was a huge thing in my life,’ Baum said, choking back tears. ‘I’ve come a long ways. My tattoo means a lot. It reminds me I am enough. For them to cover that up? They should inform me first. They never said anything to me.’ - Students say altered yearbook photos meant to shame them

In summary, Mormon modesty is bullshit.
