Ok, time to reveal what Iāve been working on!
This isnāt an official intro post with a welcome card and everything (although that will come soon if this concept is not a complete failure on my part) but this is who Iāve been working on lately in between projectsā¦
Hugues Delacour is a Frenchman who is a young attendee at the White Ball in Hawaii: Part II. He also helps Yuki in his investigation against Nick. Background Background character. He has, you guessed it: Dissocitaive Identity Disorder.
I NEVER show my early concept stuff because Iām a chronic perfectionist, but this is what early stuff looks like ā
Also peep my rough handwriting. And I kept his rough sketch!
My primary goal for creating a character with DID is to divert from mainstream mediaās portrayal and lean away from the āyou only have two alters and one is you and the other is EVIL YOU (who KILLS??)!!1!1!1!!!2ā
With DID as we understand it modernly, there is no one original āyouā, theyāre all you. Itās more like your traits drifted apart/never fully merged than broken off one main block or shattered like a mirror. So while he has a host, he also has several other alters with different origins that pertain to their experiences.
Hugues has deep repeated childhood trauma, and did not randomly develop it in adulthood someday because work got too hard. While I wonāt directly reveal his trauma, both as to not traumatise my poor audience and to give him dignity, it will be hinted at and imperative to how his alters formed.
With that comes an issue in how to visually externally portray a character switching and other alters being in the front, but luckily Iām a visual artist and occasional animator, so the worldās my oyster.
Here is a short animation of Hugues switching between his host and his protector (and back) from the initial concept sheet.
It was important that despite the large visual style change, the actual switch was subtle, and that he blinks. Thatās how quick switches actually look in real life. Itās not anything crazy and unfortunately thatās boring for showbiz.
The hair animation was mostly inspired by Sebastian/Glam by Metal Family, and Studio Ghibli, although my animation runs a little faster than these ones.
It is worth noting that this is only external depiction of what each alter fronting would look like from an artistic point of view (and also because real parts do tend to adjust their outward appearance a bit too), and his alters will look different from one another internally, as they often do to people with DID.
In fact, one of his alters is an introject of Harold Lloyd, a famous early Hollywood comedian of the time.
In Huguesā head, that alter would actually look more or less like Harold Lloyd (maybe a bit to the left? I find my introjects arenāt exact copies)

Also, thereās a call to how alters can have physiological differences like some alters needing glasses while others donāt.
Because the narrative is set before DID was even called DID, and there was barely any research on MPD at the time, Hugues and others will not really know he has this disorder. People may notice inconsistencies in his behaviour and that his memory is shoddy at best, but not enough to raise suspicion. If Hugues is anything like me, he probably thinks everyone else is like this too. What mostly will affect him most will be more dissociation and memory than alters.
Itās also not his entire personality (ironically). He generally has an affinity for horses (and Huguet loves rocking horses!) and his host wants to be an archivist. His protector wants to be a physician. He generally loves Hollywood Films and going to movie theaters/talent showings. His family owns a newspaper press company in France that he doesnāt want anything with. He can speak French and English. He has synesthesia! Much to discuss that is not just DID.

Much plans for him in the works, Iām making his playlist at the moment (key event) (unavoidable) (first step to axondrite character creation I fear)
and itās quite freeing bc afaik he will be in the H:PII plotline as a minor minor character, but thereās less pressure to put Hawaii-esque songs in his playlist because of that minimality
AND he already has a theme set that I have a lot of experience in, shall we say? So thereās many songs to pick from (that I liked a long time ago so Iām having a nostalgia trip rn) and I have interesting plans for his visual design too that I think could work well
Curious what dungeons and dragons (or baldurs gate) class each of your OCs would be?
Ooooh I am very rusty from playing D&D (or Baldurās gate, I was obsessed when it first came out and it died as quickly as it came on) and I only played as one or two classes because I didnāt find any of the tanks interesting
Simon would be a Monk
Iām really tempted to make Nick a Bard, but only because all my twinks are Bards and I could see him using Vicious Mockery to make people kill themselves (real) (did this a lot in both my campaigns and BG3). In reality probably a rogue though.
Yuki is a Sorcerer or Wizard. He was inspired by a magical Sim from the Sims 4 so that makes sense.
I think Stella would be a Cleric.
Thy Majesty would also be a Cleric but for a different divine power.
By the way, an OC I never talk about is Damien, who is my D&D/BG3 default go-to whenever I have to play a game. Heās a fallen aasimar Bard and was originally for a Curse of Strahd campaign I never completed because I have a habit of dating my D&D DMs and them turning out to be assholes.
He does have wings and a halo but BG3 needed heavy mods for that ā
Iāve been thinking of starting an actual blog blog about my life and musings (as you do) and the dnd experiences is not even the largest portion of what was wrong with my life at that point š
And also on attention span, it tends to extend to other tabletop games. It seems to make me a drag at parties and get-togethers. But Iāll tolerate a game if I have to on occasion. DND howeverā¦ itās usually like 3-7 hours of straight attention that I just donāt have the patience for
Scared this is gonna sound like something a bot would ask but would you consider doing art trades?
In theory yes, I do participate in Artfight each year and I do believe in trades of similar value instead of monetary (mentioning this since I already have my commissions open so not to confuse you)
A couple of things to note though,
1. I generally donāt like drawing character portraits standing idly inexpressively.
Now, you could say Iāve done it on occasion for my characters but they served another purpose (giving people a colour palette for Artfight, mostly, since Iām a noir artist, and theyāre āambientā so they show their personality or the world they live in smaller undertoned ways)
But my biggest problem with Artfight is that I dislike not pushing myself to do their character justice and not just draw them like š on the page
2. Your character ideally needs to have something. Some kind of backstory or symbolism or traits that I can latch onto and make something out of.
For example, each of my characters actually have a colour associated with them (nickās is red ā) and he can also be associated with knives, wine, blood (obviously), trees/forests, pianos, violins, two-piece suits, orcas, and phones.
So it doesnāt have to be anything crazy or unique. Using colours to identify your characters isnāt exactly new stuff. This kind of feeds back into the ānot wanting to draw characters just stood thereā thing.
These arenāt hard rules, but something that motivates me much more than idle portraits is being able to say something. This is more like my own internal limitations and struggles than me being stuck-up about what I draw. If I could draw endless portraits of my characters just standing around doing nothing I would trust me on god, but itās just not how my internal motivation works. Thatās why it takes me so long to draw the mundane by the way, laying down the basics feels abnormal to me, I guess because my education taught me that idle is bad. Show personality in everything. Thats just how it was.
Your skill level doesnāt matter to me. I find beginner styles very whimsical and full of a sort of freedom you lose when you get to higher skill. They know how to break the rules much better than any professional sometimes because theyāre not limited by internal rules you set as you grow in skill. So long as YOUāRE inspired Iām happy.

The latest update: fixing Nickās streak to actually be grey and not white, as god intended
Itās a neat little stylistic choice to have it white but the name āSimon Petrikovā is now a slur in my household. Itās a blockable offence atp. People on short-form content sites like my stuff a lot but theyāre also rude Rude RUDE! But alas, at least theyāre honest.
I also saw some utterly unforgivable face cards on Pinterest while browsing and fixed up his face a bit to match while I was at it ā
