There are some core values I don’t compromise on, including respect, hard work, and continuous learning. I learnt most of these from my parents and a good percentage I discovered from the eve…
Road Map
Hi! I am Carl, a designer and writer. I love music, good design and I have a thing for art and murals. I do freelance UX and graphic design to get enough practice hours to become a pro. I am an educator and advocate for learning and continuous self-development.
I am currently pursuing my career interest in cybersecurity and data analytics with a graduate degree at the Anderson School of Management, The University of New Mexico. I started the Master of Science in Information Systems and Assurance (MS ISA) program and I hope it meets my expectation of preparing me to be the International Information Systems Consultant and Design Entrepreneur that I aspire to be.
I will share my hobbies, career-related thoughts and interests through this blog to document my journey as much as I can.

Yes, I dropped the cybersecurity part of this journey. I simply lost interest. Knowing that I would need security clearance for most cyber jobs in the US that I was curious about also weakened my interest.
What’s more, my internship experience over the summer shed new light on one of my many career interests that I have been avoiding for so long for an irrational fear of failure. Here’s the experience in a nutshell:

Rodrigo Bijou: Governments don't understand cyber warfare. We need hackers
My thoughts:
Rodrigo Bijou makes a sound point about how terrorist groups like Al Shabab used social media to radicalise and recruit young people. This clearly proves that certain groups and individuals wield more power and have a better understanding of the evolving nature of the cyberspace as a tool for sharing information than some governments and international organisations do. From that perspective, he has a valid point about governments becoming less efficient at adapting and learning from cyber conflicts and warfare.
I am not sure how I feel about relying on individuals and peer-to-peer security as a sole means to mitigate and tackle cyber warfare as opposed to relying on governments and larger international institutions. I found myself asking if there could be a common ground where governments play, at the very least, a regulatory role. Conversely, I am also concerned about the kind of government regulations that could be enforced on the individual "ethical" hacker that he suggests as a solution. As much as these educated hackers have a valid incentive to be ethical and trustworthy, what is to say there could not find other motivations to cause harm like Al Shabab did or does.
Ultimately, I feel that losing confidence in the government would result in some apathy and lawlessness. A middle ground could be that governments could dedicate more resources to setting encryption standards for data sharing and use rather than an outright ban in some cases, as he mentioned in the video.

James Lyne: Everyday cybercrime — and what you can do about it
My Thoughts:
I find it astonishing how extreme the statistics of cybercrime are, and cybercrime is growing in frequency and complexity. The fact that cybercriminals have commercialised their services exponentially increases the number of cybercriminals. James Lyne's illustrates common but imperceptible ways that everyone could fall victim to malicious attacks. He cites the example of attacks that could originate from physical or external attempts such as corrupting a computer system with a USB drive, and the more common yet hidden traps found on malware-infected websites.
Lyne also points out the simple actions we take for granted that make us susceptible to cyber-attacks, such our habits on social media and browsing other sites on the internet. His presentation is both relevant to the internet user at home and in the workplace. What struck me the most was the flaws that come with our everyday mobiles devices, such as the WIFI search functionality, which make us automatically vulnerable to malicious attacks.
This talk is an interesting discovery which should inform the kinds of security upgrades we should expect from manufacturers and designers of our everyday devices as well as the need to promote education that dwells more on understanding how technologies work as opposed to education for being merely technology savvy.
