Once an isthmus into the Aral Sea, Moynaq now feels like a desert ghost town. In the town's sole cafe the only thing on offer is Coke. A broken mariner-themed clock hangs on the wall, hands frozen at 9:15. A dozen boats have been assembled in a sort of graveyard to document the tragedy, but even those go missing, often peeled for scrap metel. The Aral Sea, northwest Uzbekistan. Once among the world's largest, this salt lake was ravaged by cotton production instituted during the Soviet era. Today it's nearly gone. I visited a once-vibrant port town here, where summer temps reach the upper-40's (100+ Fahrenheit) and rusty fishing boats languish on sandy banks. The single most fascinating structure I've seen in the last three months is Kalta Minor. This is Khiva's girthy, green half-minaret. The elegant bohemoth looks like a giant tiled slinky dropped at the entrance to Khiva's old town. It's unlike anything else you'll see in the Muslim world because its construction was abandoned when it still only 30m tall and about 12m in diameter. This is the mausoleum of Pahlavon Mahmoud, Khorezem's 13th century wrestler-poet and patron saint of Khiva. Yes, this good man achieved the dream trifecta: philosopher, wrestler, and poet. Famed both for his verses and his ability to execute a mean sleeper. He was reputed to have dominated competitions as far as Iran and India. Burried here also is Khan Mohammed Rakhim II, Khiva's last ruler before the Soviet era.
