i love love LOVE rockdrian testing the limits of loving someone to the point of invention every day. theyre figuring out how to make it rain in that biodome bc grace mentioned offhandedly one day that he missed the way it felt. grace's glasses break and theyre figuring out how eyesight works and creating the best glasses ever despite having no concept of light. rockdrian tag teaming the xenonite suits to be thinner than previously thought possible so grace can hug them and it feel like a ‘real’ hug. grace having to be careful about what he misses/wants bc rockdrian WILL figure out a way to do it (threat. statement.) and rockdrian working tirelessly to make sure grace feels loved and welcomed and safe bc nothing is ever enough. they want to give him more. they want to make sure he never wants for anything bc he’s theirs and grace is overwhelmed but like in the best way

I can't stop thinking about the fact that what if Adrian wrote a paper on how aliens could never be made of carbon and then lo and behold their fuck ass partner comes back from their little space trip only to bring back an ALIEN MADE UP IF CARBON

I believe that Stratt had to be very scare when she got those first logs/ or videos (depending if is Book!Stratt or Movie!Stratt) in which Grace is all by himself explaining that he is not sure what he is doing there, because she had a solution so the astronauts didn't kill each other in a small confinement in which they would have to spend a lot of time together, but she hadn't created a solution for what would happen if the astronauts were completetly isolated.

I mean, isolateion confinemented is know to have effects in the psyche of people, humans are social animals after all, and I don't think that Stratt have accounted the possibility that only one of the astronauts would make it. I thing that even in her calculated mind, she was blind by the pressure of having to make the project work as fast as it could, or she was too confident about the solution she found with the induced coma (at least in the book she had the back up of the coma resistant gen). At least in the movie Grace's hads the "Don't go Crazy room", in the book Hail Mary is more minimalistic, it is a lab, the rooms, storage and the cabin of control, nothing more.

But in those first logs/videos Grace is completely alone, confuse and without a single memory, not able to remember why is he here, what is the mision, what was his task, all that been waste time, because he had to figure it out all by himself, and the plan was for someone to be there to guide him.

Eva Stratt must have been so stress out, what if the bettles doesn't have nothing more than videos/logs of Grace losing his mind in space?What if he just sent the bettles without thinking in a irrational episode? What if the solitude make him give up before he could find a solution for th astrophage problem?

Even a bright mind in solitude can get twisted, they can break and she would have see her only hope slowly lost himself before he could even do his job, his sacrifice would have meant for nothing, her actions would have meant for nothing.

And then a spider locking rock appears in the videos, or is mention in the logs, and Stratt can feel Grace cheering up, having more hope and curiosity and ideas. Grace is not alone anymore, and he is doing his job and he looks to be in a better mental place... Stratt owns so much to Rocky, and that little alien maybe not even know, and if knows, then Stratt must be the first human ever been hated by an alien.

When he found out about what happened to Grace, Rocky was reasonably horrified and livid. On their way to Erid, Grace hears the most beautiful tune he cannot seem to understand. It doesn’t sound Eridian, it just sounds like regular music. He sees Rocky on his laptop messing with Garage Band. Grace asks what’s up, very amused. Rocky tells him,

I'm very conviced that Adrian is the eridian in charge that the state of the dome is optimal and that Grace has everything he needs to have a long life, because, besides Rocky, they are the most invested in Grace wellbeing.

I love the idea of Rocky discussing with other eridians for the sake of Grace and his dome, because that right there is his best friend. However, I think that Adrian reason for taking care of Grace, at least in the start, besides they been grateful, is selfish; They don't want to lose another piece of Rocky.

Adrian knows that his mate is not the same that went in to a trip to save the stars, and he will never be. He returned...changed. A version of Rocky died with the other 22 eridians in that spaceship, and parts of him got blurry in all those years in solitude.

Grace saved Rocky in more senses than what they may be able to comprehend, but Adrian does.

They are now connected in ways that go beyond kinship, mind or body. Their bond is written in the stars, an echo of hope in the universe.

Grace is now part of Rocky, it is thanks to this human that Rocky can make jokes and fool around and feel wonder and excitement even after all what had happened to him.

It is around Grace that Rocky is more himself, because he doesn't have to pretend to be okay, nor that he is the same that he was before, he can only be Rocky. Adrian feels impotente about it, but at least is grateful to know that his mate can be this new version of himself with someone else until he is ready to open to them, because Adrian is patient and if Rocky needs time they can give him the eternity.

Adrian knows that when Grace dies, he is going to take a piece of Rocky with him too, and Rocky's spark is going to get dull.

Adrian would always love their mate, they waited for 46 human years, and they would wait a thousand times more if that meant to see him again, but if they can do something to postpone that pain, maybe enough for his mate to understand that Grace isn't meant to stay with them forever, maybe they could save some of that spark in Rocky.

80 human years is so short for eridians, not even old enough to be an adult, and yet half of it have already passed, Adrian can do nothing more than trying their best to find a way,to make it last longer, just a couple of years longer.

Adrian just don't want to lose their mate again, and if that means making a human live longer, then they will find the way to do it.
