regis out here looking like somebodys aunt in that wig and i love that for him
maybe hes born with it
wigs in process
failed face plate (ears broke) but i sculpted spookie vampire regis alternate parts for fun!
made some lil props for regis, and found some clothes for him to wear, the sweater was made by my good friend Kelsey who also made coles sweater! I also gave him a very basic faceup which i think gives him a lot of character, still waiting on his wig to arrive
making teeny tiny jewelry
Geregis bjds prototype, i think the body i used for geralt is way too swole. I might customize the body i used for regis to be a bit more built and have his scars. The body i used for regis is called Yfrit, one im working on with my good friend fenni! Also once i print them in resin I plan on having their skin tones be a bit more muted, this filament is a little on the saturated side for this witcher and vampire! I sculpted the heads myself, geralts a bit of a tough cookie to sculpt, but capturing regis vibe was easy! the final dolls will be a mix of their book and game appearances
Cole got a new face and my friend Kelsey made him a hat and sweater, I redid his mouth mostly, but also tweaked everything a little. His new face was a different color than his old body, so he got a whole reprint!
Cole Dole (Coll Doll) part 3 - PANTS
Continuing on the Cole Doll journey, we find ourselves at the pants. These were a real rollercoaster to make, and if they didn't look so cool I'd be really mad about the costume design.
They appear to be made of leather straps stitched in a plait/herringbone pattern down the front and back, with some leather strappy things down the ankle on the outside.
A more sensible person would have probably just painted the design on an ordinary pair of sewn pants, or omitted that part of the design altogether for doll scale, but I am everything but sensible.
The failures:
Putting them in one image like this really underplays how much time was spent on them, but it all led to the final success so the time wasn't wasted (right??).
These pants will always haunt me, they were so close!
In the end, I found a much lighter fabric that has kind of a leathery effect while being very thin and not rubbery. I guess time will tell if it degrades as well (pray for me).
I started with some basic yoga pants in a stretchy brown fabric from my scrap bin, and, keeping them on the doll, I wrapped and glued the strips of the new faux leather fabric on top of them.
Sorry, I don't have process photos from while I was wrapping and stuff because it was a lot of fiddly gluing and I didn't know if it would work (nothing worse than recording a process only for it to be another failure).
The design ended up being a little bit different to the game, as the seam is up the back of the legs rather than the sides, but I think it was a reasonable compromise for the scale of the doll, and it made them much more flexible than the original.
So without further ado, the final results:
You never see the closure in the game, but I figured this kind of closure made sense. So while they are technically removable, I won't be removing them unless I absolutely have to. My heart couldn't take it if I tore them getting them on or off.
I'm really happy with how they turned out in the end, and I absolutely won't be revising the design again.
coles new wig came in, I'm super happy with it!
this is my first iteration of the Cole doll, rocking some old barbie clothes!
i just found your blog and what you do is so cool and fascinating to me
i’m a 3d sculptor as well and this made me want to print my work so badly haha
what kind of printer do you have? is there any particular reason you started printing these characters and making these dolls?
are you using nomad? have you ever used zbrush?
i wonder if you could print like custom clothes too
anyways super cool!! thanks for sharing
Hey I appreciate the question! I have an anycubic mono m5s resin printer and a bambu p1s filament printer.
I started printing dolls because I wanted dolls of my favs but couldn't afford bjds, I started with a 1/6 barbie sized Cole BJD and then a 1/6 modified polaris of my inquisition oc Nyumi.
I experimented for a while with making different parts for the dolls, I didn't like how skinny they were and the legs were really kicky so I started modifying them in Blender, I've never tried Nomad or Zbrush, though I've heard they're much better for sculpting! I just knew how to use blender from making mods for videogames and converting models. So I loaded up Coles head for reference and got sculpting!
I haven't seen anyone try printing clothes for dolls, but you probably could polly pocket style design some to use with TPU, a flexible type of filament, I've seen people use TPU for the bases of fursuits, its super interesting!
Heres the pla prototypes for Dorian, Sera, and my Inquisitor Alexander Trevelyan, I have some nice wigs for Sera and The Inquisitor but I'll need to make a custom one from yarn for dorian. Dorian and Alex are on ChrisGTZB bodies, Tom of Finland and Skeledaddy. and Sera is on ArtcastingStore's Sheila body. I've placed orders for custom eyes with my friend Fenni, using the characters in game eye textures, so I'm just waiting on those!
This is like the 5th version of my Cole sculpt, I'm pretty happy with it finally but I said that last time! Cole has a very unique face and i wanted to do him justice but especially the eyes are hard to capture!! Now its over to my good friend Fenni @frozenoverstudios to be printed, hopefully for the last time
Cole Dole (Coll Doll) part 2
He is finished!
The doll I started while my dad was dying in 2023 is finally done!
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of process photos, because a lot of my process is trial and error, and there's usually a lot of trials and a great many errors before I call something done.
One time I tried to make a video of a project I had been working on, spent hours cutting down the footage, only to find, as I reached the end of the clip, that I'd completely given up on the process I'd been using and started over from scratch. Needless to say, I never finished the video and never tried making a cute tutorial again.
I do however have a few prototypes I've saved so there's some potential for insight there.
I'll do posts sort of in the order I made things, starting with his shoes.
Cole wears these adorable little pointed slippers/clogs that I really want in my size. These are the main reference images I used, they're not ideal, but at the time I only had the game on xbox and there was no like "free camera" mode to zoom in on things.
I started out making a pattern with the ol' "cling wrap and masking tape over the body part" patterning technique, with the intention of sewing them.
However, once they were sewn it was clear that they were terrible and not the correct shape at all (if you're picking up that I'm a perfectionist, there is no prize for that).
So I sculpted them out of light air dry clay instead (any brand would do, I use stuff from Daiso):
I like light clay because it's so light (wow) and doesn't set completely rock solid. Sometimes it can be annoying to work with, but it worked out really well for the shoes. I don't think I even put any lining over the feet, the clay isn't super sticky so they pulled right off when they were dry. After that, I covered them with green faux suede, and brown for the soles.
I'm gonna be real with you, I genuinely don't know the exact colour they're supposed to be, I think like a camel brown? I'm pretty sure there's a lighting bug on xbox because the colours and textures on the clothes at "home" and in cutscenes look way different out in the world.
Anyway I already had the green faux suede and I was using it on his jerkin so I figured it would tie in okay (not the only artistic liberty I took in this project).
Behold, the final shoes:
I'll post the pants next, they were an absolute nightmare. 🙃
