The bathroom tile is cold beneath your feet. Beneath the fluffy white towel hugging your body, goosebumps crawl up your legs.

The mirror is foggy with condensation, the room carries a dampness, and the scent of fresh soaps lingers in the air.

With a heavy breath, you swipe a hand across the mirror, clearing a path to stare at your reflection. It’s not the first time you’ve stood here since you fought the virus and the effects of the vaccine targeted the decay.

The past two weeks have been spent doing nothing other than lounging in bed and pouring over Abel’s notes—which was the agreement your boyfriends agreed to to keep you in bed a while longer. Cassian and Azriel are mother-henning the fuck out of you, but they make for good nurses.

And they’re hot, too.

One day he runs into her and realizes she is his mate. They end up hooking up and Eris is super competitive in bed.

“Is she…” Cassian swallows thickly, glancing at Azriel, eyes wide with fear. “Is she going to be okay?”

Azriel doesn’t say anything for a long moment. The thing is, he doesn’t know. He doesn’t fucking know if you’ll be okay. He put blind faith into Abel during the scientists lasts moments when threatening him with a fate that happened anyway if he didn’t produce the antidote.

His gaze falls to you, limp in Cassian’s arms. Your breaths scrape from your throat, ragged and fast. Sweat lines your brow, and you’re so, so pale.

From that high up, the ground seemed so far away, thousands of feet before you’d hit the earth. The children pointed and laughed when your voice thickened with fear and fat teardrops rolled down your cheeks. Instead of getting help, they began a game of tag, forgetting all about you.

You’ve been working yourself to the bone these past few weeks, but anything is better than being on the run. You don’t care how many times you have to copy down the near same sequence and list of ingredients for Abel, you have a roof over your head, you don’t have to constantly keep quiet or look over your shoulder. You're doing good work.

If you were messing around, you’d think light of his comment, but the contents of your stomach haven’t sat well with you since this morning when Abel insisted on needing more DNA from the undead to continue his work.

He’d requested protection from your party while he briskly led you up the stairs to a room you hadn’t taken note of. In fact, you hadn’t cleared the building for yourself since Nesta and Eris brought you here, assuming the place was safe. A rookie mistake, even if you do sort of trust the eldest Archeron sister.

You certainly don’t trust their father.

Abel Archeron is…not what you expected. Unruly hair grayed with age, shoulders curled inward as if each day he lives since losing his love has weighed on him. You suppose even 200 days ago he may have appeared almost…youthful.

200 days of near solitude has made him a recluse. Nesta mentioned that they didn’t visit very often, always shooed away with a near incoherent mumble that he was onto something. That finally he might have the answer.

Your nose wrinkles when you step over the threshold into the moderately sized classroom. It’s no lecture room, but a small classroom, littered with weeks of food scraps, supplies, bottles of various concoctions and liquids—is that a bucket of pee?— and…if you can get past the burning of your nostril hairs…you catch the scent of decay.
