Zijian gave her a smile, albeit a rather wan one; in truth, he pitied the poor girl for being forced into this against her will, particularly when he couldn’t guess any better at why it would be with him of all people.

Is this some last-ditch attempt at regaining the power slipping through our fingers? If it is, they couldn’t have picked a more disposable son to do it.

“I should say the same of you. I’d never expected to end up at this point, but...I could do much worse.” He laughed, not liking how nervous it sounded.

He briefly took her hand, his palm cool and soft against hers as he pressed his lips to the back of it. Looking back up at her, his cobalt eyes danced with genuine enthusiasm.

“As you might’ve guessed, I’m Cao Pi’s younger brother - Cao Zhi, at your service. I can only hope he’s treated you well since you’ve arrived here.”
