Face-to-face meetings of the three diamonds happened very rarely, which was something that Pearl was quite thankful of. She would never utter her thoughts aloud, but her Diamond did tend to get almost intimidating at those times. Even just thinking that made Pearl feel quite guilty, but it was the simple truth.

Whatever they were discussing must have been important, as only one pearl was allowed in with them. Silently, Pearl couldn’t help but wonder why she hadn’t been the one allowed entry, but again that thought left her feeling guilty. Her Diamond would never make an incorrect decision, and if she had decided that White Diamond’s Pearl was better suited to be present for the meeting, then that must have been right.

At least she wasn’t alone outside the meeting room. Looking over to her yellow counterpart, Pearl offered something that could almost be described as a smile. Almost.

Pearl could tell the other gem was nervous, and she wanted to do everything she could to make her feel at home. With Rose, she had been confident in her decision, but it wasn’t as if this pearl had anyone like that on Earth.

“It’s okay,” Pearl said softly, pulling her hands away. She didn’t want to make the gem any more anxious than she already seemed to be. “Why don’t you just stick with me for a little while? Rose can be a little…overwhelming,” she said. She was sure that Rose would be excited to have another gem, another pearl, but she also knew how their leader could get. 

“Is there anything you’re interested in learning? We have healers, warriors, blacksmiths. Anything you could ever dream of, you could learn on Earth,” she said, though she wasn’t sure that would make other pearl feel any better. There were many options, and she remembered how it had felt when she came to Earth. Slightly terrifying, but it also felt amazing to know she could do whatever she wanted.

Pearl also remembered her fascination with fighting. She wanted to be on the front lines, defending the planet from Homeworld. Maybe the other gem had something in mind, and maybe she didn’t. Either way, they would find a place for her. Pearl was sure of it.

The offer surprised her— was it really alright for her not to meet the leader? Despite the renegade’s assurance, Pearl couldn’t help but worry. Decisions, she was finding, were just as stressful as she’d imagined they would be.

“Thank you.” Perhaps, if she stuck with the other pearl, she would be able to help her with decisions ... ? Or would that be asking too much of her ? She was a pearl too, wasn’t she ? What if she was finding this just as difficult as she was ? Pearl wouldn’t want to put any extra pressure on her.

She listened tot he other’s words, letting them pull her out of her own anxious thoughts. Healers. Warriors. Blacksmiths.

She thought that she could become a healer, or even a blacksmith, if she was simply taught how, but a warrior... Well, while she greatly admired the renegade, and all of the other rebels, she didn’t think that she was quite cut out for fighting.

“Perhaps ... it would be interesting to learn about—- healing ... ?” There was a questioning tone to her voice, as if she was unsure about what she was saying.

“Come with me.”

Pearl held her hand out to the other pearl. It was a soft spoken offer, Pearl’s goal wasn’t to force the other into anything. She wanted to give the other a choice, something that to Pearl had made all the difference to her. 

“I don’t want to force you into anything, I want to give you a choice.” Pearl hesitated, looking around to make sure that they were still alone. “You can stay here, continue serving Blue Diamond. It would certainly be the safe option. However if you come with me I can ensure that you will be able to do anything you want, that nobody will be able to force you to do anything that you don’t want to do.”

Pearl froze, staring up at the renegade in silence. What was this ... ? A choice ? What was that supposed to mean ? She was a pearl, nothing more. You didn’t ask pearls what they wanted. That wasn’t what they were meant for.

But ... the renegade ... she was a pearl too, wasn’t she ?

She’s at a complete loss of what to think or do. Admiring the rebels from a distance is one thing— but joining them ? She couldn’t possibly ... could she ?

Her gaze darted around, as if she expected another gem to come rushing in any moment. But, of course, no one did. They must all have been too busy fighting... Perhaps, if she disappeared, they would assume that she had been shattered. Perhaps none would notice the absence of a single, silent pearl.

Her eyes dropped down to the offered hand. It would be so easy to turn the renegade away now. It would be so easy to turn her down. But ...

... She found herself reaching out, and gently taking her hand.

“It does not. You pearls are mostly silent unless you’re spoken to.” Peridot knew she was already stating the obvious, “Here, you can talk to me, rank does not exist here.” She shrugged her shoulders, “Pass me the metal plating. It’s on the desk.”

Pearl headed off to find the metal plating, returning a few moments later. “It ... is not a matter of rank.” She held the object out for the smaller gem to take. “Silence is comforting.” Silence made more sense. Speech, in Pearl’s experience, was largely confusing.

earth earth earth! of all the planets to end up back on– it had to be earth. this stupid, cloddy, mudsack of a planet. with it’s stupid grass and the dumb flowers and those damn birds that keep leering at her with beady, judgmental eyes.  

ruby-1f4 cut-4nd was stuck making a reluctant home on the planet. lacking a crew, technology, and a real, set-in-stone plan, she’d been spending the days, (four, to be exact.), keeping her corner of the earth free of hostiles. hostiles, like, a pair of deer, a rabbit, and a corrupted gem that shrieked when threatened and ran off.

“GAH-”

the ruby reacted as appropriately as she could manage. jumping out of her skin and wheeling on the strange with her weapon clasped in two hands. her teeth ground together as she eyed the pearl silently for a few moments, before slowly asking. “….what?”

the ruby is definitely angry. but, pearl supposes, that is only to be expected. rubies do have a tendency to be quite hot-headed, and considering that this one seems to have failed a mission ... well, can she really be blamed for her anger ?

the weapon doesn’t alarm pearl, not really. she’s sure that she could dart away before the ruby would be able to use it— and, anyway, she’s sure that if she was in real danger garnet would have foreseen it and sent for assistance. that’s what she tells herself to stop herself from panicking, anyway.

“i said, greetings.”

or... had the ruby not meant that? perhaps she had wanted her to expand? ah, verbal communication is definitely complicated.

“are you ... lost?”

“It’s okay. I promise, it’s going to work out,” Pearl said, her voice almost as quiet as the blue gem’s. She was nervous, that much was obvious. And she had every reason to be. Her gentle touch seemed to have shocked the gem, and she slowly began to run her thumb over the top of her hand. Maybe Pearl could help her relax.

Though it was long ago, Pearl remembered what it was like when she broke away from her Diamond’s rule. It was frightening, disorienting. There was nothing quite like it. Now, she wouldn’t trade her freedom for the world, but it took her quite a while to get to that point.

“You can stay with us, if you want. There’s always a place for another gem with the rebels. If it would help, you can talk to our leader, Rose. Or you could just…stick with me,” Pearl said, giving the other pearl some options. She didn’t want the gem to get overwhelmed, but it was her turn to make the decisions. Something she was sure the pearl wasn’t familiar with.

Physical touch was a strange sensation. The feeling of someone else’s hand on hers, just softly, just gently, was something she had rarely experienced in the past. She wasn’t sure whether she liked it or not, but it was helping to ground her in reality.

So ... she could stay. A Pearl with the rebels. Well, looking at the other in front of her, she supposed that wasn’t as bizarre as it felt. She wondered, briefly, if there were others here, before casting that question aside. How could she possibly let herself give in to her curiosity when there were bigger things to deal with?

Considering it, it wasn’t as if she could return. By now they would have noticed her disappearance and, finding no sign of her gem, it wouldn’t take long for them to realise what had happened. She didn’t really have much of an option.

Or ... well, she does still have one choice to make. Should she talk to their leader ... ? For another gem, this would likely be a simple decision, but for a pearl ...

“I don’t know.” Was that the wrong answer? Was she expected to make a decision? Was it possible that she’d made a mistake already? “I— I’m sorry.”

Peridot took the tool without really glancing back at her. She continued to work in peace, until she felt the Pearl’s presence still lingering, “You’re very quiet.” She wasn’t used to it, anymore. She was used to the other pearl chattering away, “You know that? You’re not in Homeworld, anymore.”

“I am ... aware of that.” Whether she was on Homeworld or on Earth, the simple fact that she didn’t enjoy talking wouldn’t change. Or ... well, that wasn’t exactly the truth. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy talking ever— she just didn’t enjoy talking to those she didn’t know well. “Does it bother you?”

“I see.” It was not like she was bothered by it. She had been used to people watching her. Especially, her superiors. She nodded at the blue pearl and resumed her work, until she stopped again, “Could you please pass the wrench, Blue Pearl?” She pointed her finger at a random direction, “It should be there, somewhere.”

Pearl was content to resume silently watching, but it seemed that Peridot had other ideas. Still... she wasn’t complaining, exactly. If she could assist in any way she would be happy to. And, anyway, it gave her something to do with her hands.

Scanning the small pile of tools it takes her only a moment to find the one in question, and she passes it to Peridot as requested. It was the only wrench there, so she assumes it was the one Peridot had wanted, “Here.”

Pearl had never imagined that she would see another Pearl in the rebel’s camp. They were the least likely to turn against the Diamonds. They were supposed to know their place. But Pearl herself had been different, and now there was a  n e w face in the crowd.

And it wasn’t just any face. She had seen this Pearl before: at Blue Diamond’s side. There were whispers, of the gem’s rebellious deeds. She just never had imagined they would have another one of her own in their ranks.

“What happened?” she said, taking the hands of the blue Pearl into her own. “Why are you here?” Her voice was hushed, though there really was no one to hide from in the camp. Everyone surrounding them were supporters of the rebellion, and they would never hurt the Pearl. But the gem in front of her was frightened, and she wanted to do everything she could to keep her calm.

She froze at the physical contact— she wasn’t used to this. Well... she wasn’t used to anything that was happening here. It was all new, and exciting and terrifying.

Pearl was used to spending her days being ordered. She was used to being told what to do and when to do it. She was used to knowing with certainty what was expected of her. But this... there was no one to tell her what to do here. Was she expected to just know ?

“I...” What could she say when she, herself, didn’t know? It had been the first impulsive decision of her life. “Th- the rebels. They attacked. I...” Her voice had been quiet before but now it dropped to a whisper, “...I don’t know why I followed.”

It all happened so quickly—- Pearl doesn’t know what to think. She shouldn’t be here. She shouldn’t be here ! Her place is beside her Diamond— that’s it. That’s the way things should be ! The way things are supposed to be. It’s what she was made for.

So why is she here ? Why did she do this ? Sharing images of the rebels fighting is one thing, but joining them ? That’s something entirely different. She betrayed her Diamond.

In a brief moment of clarity, she reaches forwards to attract the attention of the other Pearl, silently hoping that she is able to interpret her silent plea for HELP.

Pearl is... unsure what to make of this. She had been attempting to find the general location of a corrupted gem to report back to Garnet— she certainly hadn’t been expecting to find a very angry, very uncorrupted gem here. A Ruby at that... could this be one of the Rubies that the others had told her about?

Normally she would simply return to the Temple to report her finding to the others, however to get back to the warp pad she would have to cross paths with the Ruby. This is something of a predicament.

Finally deciding that simply standing there is going to get her nowhere, Pearl emerges from her hiding place. If worse comes to worse, she can always flee.

“...Greetings.”

“Is there something you need, Blue?” She had decided to call her ‘blue’ due to the fact that they were two Pearls. It was confusing to have two pearl’s in the team. But it didn’t matter. It will take time and progress.

Ah, she wasn’t anticipating any form of acknowledgment. Although, she supposes, perhaps she should have. While the others have been around her enough to know about her habits, this Peridot has not.

“...No.” Talking is not something that Pearl much enjoys. She has grown more used to it in recent centuries, but it always seems like such a chore. Non-verbal forms of communication are by far preferable, but others... do not seem to agree with her. She supposes it is only polite to expand. “I am simply observing. Apologies for disturbing you.”

Don’t mind her, she’s just watching from a distance, quietly observing the smaller gem work. In all honesty, she finds mechanics fascinating, but she's not too interested in learning for herself. It’s not that she’s not able to learn— to the contrary, she would likely be able to pick up the new skill with ease— rather, she feels that learning the ins and outs of it would make observing it far less interesting.

Had anyone else been here, she likely would have watched from closer up, but she’s still unsure of what to think of their new comrade.
