Ten years ago, Marda-Biarce won the war. The world has since moved on as he rules the world from his lavish coastal city, New Meowlantis—with his court composed of Lord General Yamato, the Prince of Flames, and Lord General Enjyu, the Prince of Lightning. Across the continent, Governor-General Joshua and Emperor Li both bear the third eye of his power, enabling them to preside over the regions granted to them. Peace reigns once more, though B-daplayers have since been outlawed save for the handpicked few. But there are whispers of those who fight against this new world, of a hero who survived, whose name inspires hope. It is said that the legendary B-damaster Armada still lives, and he is gathering an army. And in the midst of this, Gray Michael Vincent escapes from his tormentor Joshua, and lands straight in the hands of Joshua's brother, Abel Bennet.

It seems I never shared this fic on this blog, but I have been working on it again so this seems like a good time as any.

This is a bad end, dark future AU and it's my main longfic now. There'll be a heavy emphasis on OCs due to the nature of the setting, but I hope that when the canons do appear, it'll be exciting!

Since this a longfic that spans multiple parts, the character, relationship, warning, and content tags are subject to change.

Current ships are Abel/Gray, Joshua/Gray, and Yamato/Gray, but there will be...others.

On a break from his search for the legendary Cobalt Geist, the fastest and proudest member of the Shadow Alliance, Hurricane Gray, meets its most powerful, Yamato.

Gen. 10,060 words. Role reversal AU. POV 2nd person. Gray & Yamato shippy gen friendship.

This is a direct sequel to my previous fic, "now the darkness comes for me (and it comes for you)", a role swap AU that places Yamato in the Shadow Alliance where he was raised together with Biarce. The ratings and warnings are different, so it's not necessary to read the first fic, but it does give more context to Yamato's character and I do spoil the ending of that fic here.

This fic is from Gray's POV and takes place a little less than one year later.

I ended up trying to make this fic feel somewhat like episodes of the anime, even with the AU. Hopefully I pulled that off and y'all have fun reading that.

AU notes under the cut (these are also the end notes of the fic).

Yamato and Enjyu trade places as "raised by Ababa into the perfect warrior" and "Armada's best student". Enjyu still went through everything with Cornell, but the difference is that Armada picked him up instead of Ababa, so he's much better adjusted and has had time to heal from the trust issues (he's still got them, though).

Gray and Liena take Wen and Li's place as "siblings who came to the Shadow Alliance seeking to become stronger".

While Wen and Li took Terry's place as Enjyu's fellow student(s) of Armada.

From here, it gets a lot more complicated. Even though Yamato is in Enjyu's place as the Shadow Alliance's power player, it's Gray who takes Enjyu's place as the Shadow Alliance kids ringleader, but he's using control instead of power so he does things very differently and ends up 10x more manipulative.

I know Kiba from the manga rather than FS, so Kiba here came chasing after Wen and Li to join them as Armada's students.

Terry takes Gray's place as the unwilling member of the Shadow Alliance, though he's not here by blackmail but for a different (spoiler) reason.

Cornell also takes Gray's place as the "guy in the Shadow Alliance that the main character (in this case, Enjyu) has personal history with".

Bull is just doing whatever. He's basically the same as the start of the anime, but picked up by a SA member instead.

Alan is still himself, he just keeps sneaking into all my fics whenever Saitoon comes up lol

I'll do a proper post introducing the AU soon, but the Shadeless Throne is a fic that just matters a lot to me...because I it's a story I have been wanting to tell since 2006.

My first ever chaptered fic on FF.net was also a bad future AU for Battle B-daman, with the explicit goal of exploring an evil Yamato in a future where he and A Bad Guy ruled and Gray was leading the nebulous organization just called the resistance, but I was using my OCs as the baddies and it was really...well, I wasn't even a teen yet when I wrote this. If you ever wrote fic yourself at that age or have ever read fics by kids on FF.net, you can guess what this was like.

But the idea did stay with me, and I actually tried rewriting that fic as a teen to tell the story of how that bad end started, but I just didn't have the writing chops for it yet and very quickly gave up.

That's not to say I think the highest of my current writing skills, but I think I have reached a point where I have the experience, understanding, and practice needed to handle this kind of longfic with confidence and planning. And over time I realized that those old ideas just weren't usable anymore as my knowledge of the series grew.

But Shadeless is definitely descended from those old fics. It's just that it's now rooted in canon divergence and actual worldbuilding and I actually know how to write the characters nowadays.
