So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
I stopped caring whether this was factually accurate about halfway through because it’s completely AWESOME.
Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:
She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.
I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…
Reblogging my old post for this A+ addition to it
If there's one good thing that's been happening lately it's that so many new people have been asking for pollinator and wildlife plants. Like 6.5 in 10 people that come in either ask for them or are open to taking a few home. Native plants by name haven't reached the same level but we've gone from 1 person asking a week to 3 or 4. Now my grumpy ass boss is noticing the demand and will have to find a grower for them. All is not lost
& it's not just plants for the bees and butterflies, someone asked for flowers that attract BATS. something in the world is healing..

i know folks are gonna call me a pedo for this one, but i grew up seeing my mom and grandma naked. they had health issues and at times needed care and help showering. and i truly think more kids need to be shown the nonsexual reality of naked women at a young age. there is nothing sexual about my grandmothers breasts, they were simply body parts. more women die of heart attacks because people are too afraid of breasts to do real chest compressions, because they are scared to touch their breasts. the sexualization of our bodies literally kills us. i need people to be more normal about naked bodies and i'm 100% serious.
there's a whole post somewhere somebody made about how being finnish changes your view of people and sexuality that boils down to "people's problem is they've never seen their grandma naked" because if they went to saunas with their family growing up they would understand some things about how human bodies work and that includes both the "nudity is inherently sexual" delusion and the "you must be perfect to be sexy" one
People have been saying stuff for years at this point
i wish they stopped

The way adult fandom people hold indie online creators and cartoons to a much higher standard than their actual local politicians. You could be putting that energy into terrorizing and protesting conservatives at your town hall and actually make a good material impact on the world but instead you're background checking everything the trans woman who made the amazing digital circus has ever said
The point isn't "stop criticizing indie artists" or "defend your favorite show under this post". I don't even watch Digital Circus and no one is above criticism. Literally every indie show is getting torn to shreds on twitter right now and I'm not saying this to defend anyone I don't know. The point is "someone who actually has the power to kill us all and get away with it deserves way more ire and accountability than a cartoonist and I expect grown adults to understand this"
I need to make something really elaborate and cool (doesn't move

i'm very happy with cookie clicker's success of course but it's difficult to tell if it was a freak fluke or if there was some sort of unsuspected secret sauce at play. could i do it again. modesty aside somewhere in my hundreds of design docs for other game ideas there could be the game industry equivalent of a nuclear bomb. i must tread lightly

An injured character who's managed to grit their teeth and bear it through the course of a painful wound tending with scarcely a sound but as soon as the ordeal is actually over they dissolve into quiet weeping of relief and released tension and lingering pain.
an unimaginable act of heroism
One of the best parts of tumblr are the conversations that are like "hey can we perhaps start saying normal things again?" replied with "no we're doing cum divination, get with the program."
