All I wanted to gift myself this year was to get rid of all the kitchen appliances that my ex gave me when we were starting off. One year for Christmas, he set me up for my then-new kitchen...All really nice electrical appliances and knives that otherwise would have taken me some time to purchase. This morning, I threw away all of those old gifts. I love to cook, it’s one of my favorite self care remedies, but every time I would go to chop a vegetable, I would stare at my knives, remembering that Christmas and remembering all those brutal fights we would find ourselves in thereafter. I never want to throw away anything that works fine because honestly, I’m frugal with purchases for myself. But this year, I did it. One of my most favorite aspects of photographing people is when I get to take a step back and see some incredible things through my lens, that I otherwise may not experience in my own life line. My gratitude for these moments always puts me in check with the things that I value most. This weekend I had the unique privilege of photographing 50 years of marriage, and a renewal of wedding vowels; something I have never been a part of. They were so kind to one another and kind to one another’s family. They were silly and he made her laugh. They walked at the same pace through the gardens, rarely letting go of one another’s hands. After the memorial tonight, I walked back to my car with my friend. It was about 5 blocks and I nursed my candle flame the whole way. There was something about carrying a lit candle in memoriam of all those we have lost to substance use disorder, and walking with it down Kensington Ave. It didn’t blow out either, despite the passing cars and the el roaring by. Back to reality...With fresh perspectives and an open mind and heart. Travel is so damn good for the soul. It detaches you from the daily “stressors” and places you in the unfamiliar, and you just gain this first-person perspective on adaptability. You experience yourself learning and utilizing your existing abilities in a brand new light, proving how important so many of your character traits truly are. Seeing them to work outside of your comfort zone is proof that They should be embraced, not hidden away. You should always allow yourself to be seen and heard because you. are. able. And what you know, and what you experience matters.
