my sweet child

(A poem I wrote for my sister-in-law)

i am burdened by the loneliness of my sickness 

i cannot hold my babies close and sing lullabies of sweet dreams and pleasant things

instead i feel my heart race 

and beat against my ribs

like a scornful drum 

as i lie next to my babies

their tiny faces looking up at me so lovingly 

yet so fully of dismay 

i cannot fathom my own pain

some days i feel as if this was my fate from the beginning 

to suffer

i still fight with the rage of a tortured animal

snarling and snapping down on those who just don’t understand 

How could they understand 

i lie awake 

Endless hours 

Knowing the sheep I count are sent off to be slaughtered 

how do i explain 

how do i make the pain stop

how do i tell my flesh and blood that i haven’t been okay

because admitting defeat is weak 

and i have always been a source of strength 

how do i say

help me

without it breaking the independence that was so forcefully put upon me as a child myself

it feels almost hopeless 

i feel trapped in a dying body 

but my babies still crawl into my bed 

whispering
