My hot take & theory of the day is that I 100% believe that Julian groomed the twins into sleeping with each other, which is supported by the Greek class seemingly finding it hot and the role incestuous relationships had in Ancient Greek and Roman society.

Elaborating on this post and my long winded rant in the tags because y’all seem to be interesting in this take!

I covered the Camilla/Charles rape theory a while ago, and I’m linking the post here because I feel like I expressed my thoughts a lot better there than in the tags.

As for Julian, his relationship with the Greek class, and sexual coercion in cults: Julian was known for being inappropriate with previous students. Georges Laforgue all but outright tells Richard this as plainly as possible.

I think this is the real root of why Laforgue dislikes Henry so heavily. Henry, although he’s also a victim of Julian, has so much influence over the group. Henry picked up a lot of traits from Julian even down to the pen he writes with.

It’s almost outright stated that every member of the Greek class had an innapropriate relationship with Julian, especially Henry. Julian isolated them from the outside world, and manipulated the ancient world to suit his views(and by extension, the Greek class). — This includes the twins, and the way the Greek class perceives them in general, among other things.

Every member came from a home with a strained familial relationship. Julian saw this, took advantage of it, and used that as an opportunity to mold them into who he wanted them to be. When the consequences of this caught up to him, he fled and no one suspected a thing.

He was a rich, white “educated” professor, and rural Vermont(and New England in general for that matter) has been known to be extremely white and by extension extremely racist. The people would rather believe a local man’s made up tale about a man of color to pin the murder on before they’d look in front of them and see what was clearly there all along.

I’d even go as far as to say Julian and the Greek class aren’t nearly as brilliant as people make them out to be. They’re wealthy and white. That’s the biggest reason why they got away with what they did, and why Julian got away with everything he did.

Their dynamic is really interesting to me because they only spend time together near the end of the book, and by McVries telling Garraty he’s the only one Stebbins will speak to I feel like that means McVries might’ve tried to talk to him at some point during the walk.

There’s also the whole scene where him and Stebbins have their heads together and wordlessly part to let Garraty walk with them. Overall, I think that McVries found Stebbins interesting but not to the obsessive extent of Garraty, and that Stebbins wasn’t really interested in McVries until they had their forced bonding moment where Stebbins trauma dumped about his father in front of McVries while talking to Garraty.

I view stebvries as ‘the woman’ and ‘the other woman’ getting together. Not because they have any love for each other, but because of their shared connection with Ray. McVries would resent Stebbins for catching Garraty’s attention when he couldn’t, and Stebbins wouldn’t care one way or the other which would drive McVries crazy.

dally/cherry for your ship bingo......

Dally messing with Cherry because she’s a soc, and Cherry hating him for it but unfortunately being attracted to him does have potential entertainment wise. So yeah, I can see the vision.

Cherry and Dally are the opposite of puppy love in my eyes. They’d be really messy and toxic if they got together(God forbid they got married and had kids), but Dally would probably be into that.

I don’t think they’d last long if they did start a relationship. I see them as an on-and-off-again fling from over the years. Cherry would want Dally to commit, he wouldn’t, they’d break up, they’d get back together, and the cycle would repeat itself.

There’s great angst potential if you think she was attracted to him. That would mean she lost her boyfriend, crush, friendship with Ponyboy and Johnny all within the span of days. To make matters worse, they’re all connected in how each other died.

Cherry and Ponyboy have a very “puppy love” relationship in my eyes, but I also don’t see them as entirely wholesome. I could imagine them developing more concrete feelings for each other if they’d had time to.

That being said, I don’t know if Ponyboy would forgive Cherry for the way she treated Johnny on his death bed, or if Cherry would be able to look at him without thinking about her boyfriend dying because Johnny killed him to protect Ponyboy.

I think that if they got together post-book it’d go to blows if they didn’t address their feelings regarding the people they lost and their class statuses(particularly Cherry’s view of the Greasers).

They have the possibility to be toxic and doomed, or they have the possibility to be really sweet and healing for each other.

I LOVE raybins, they’re the ship of The Long Walk(novel) to me.

Their dynamic and chemistry is so good, and you can tell there’s some complex emotions there from the very first time Ray sees Stebbins. For chapters before they speak to each other for the first time, Stebbins stays on Ray’s mind.

McVries is the one to point out that Ray is the only person Stebbins speaks to, and Stebbins even tries to give Ray advice at a few points in the story(although Ray doesn’t really pick up on this every time because Stebbins is so cryptic and has a bit of a weird way of speaking).

Their relationship is nuanced, and so are their feelings towards each other. Ray wants to know everything about Stebbins, and Stebbins wants to be known by Ray. However, they’re mutually antagonistic and like getting under each other’s skin. Despite this, in the end Stebbins reached for Ray in his final moments and Ray stopped to check if Stebbins was still breathing.

There’s a lot going on with both of them. Ray’s father was squaded, and Stebbins’s father is a squad leader(the squad leader, if you believe the Major is his father). Ray has a lot of feelings towards his masculinity and sexuality; Stebbins is a walking reminder of everything Garraty represses.

I could go on, we’d be here all day.

4. who is a role model in your life, real or fictional?

classicists emily wilson, mary beard and professor edith hall are all big inspirations for me! i often worry that classics is a dying field but they all seem to thrive in it and have so much obvious passion

30. what are you opinions on the person asking?

i definitely want to get to know you better but so far you seem super cool!! within the tsh fandom i especially love finding people i can yap about the twins with because it’s a subject many shy away from plus i feel we have a lot in common

I would love to get to know you better too, and I think you’re absolutely right about us having a lot in common(Ethel Cain, The Secret History, a love for classics)! Also you’re one of my favorite mutuals, so being seen as cool by you is a compliment I’ll take to my grave.

I agree about the twins, and it’s a shame so many people in the fandom tend to shy away from conversations about them and their dynamic. Fans seem to shy away from discussions about sex & sexuality within the book in general which is a shame because it’s one of the core elements of the novel and what drives the plot forward.

They have the bitterness + resentment of ‘exes’ that never dated, and they fascinate me.

A lot of tension and interesting chemistry between them. His murder was basically their super messy breakup because Bunny wasn’t included in the group orgy.

I don’t think Bunny would ever admit his feelings for Henry if he even realized he had them because he’s homophobic, and I don’t know that Henry would be willing to enter a relationship with Bunny because he felt taken advantage of by him.

Overall they’re pretty tragic to me because you can tell that there had been something tender there at one point in time, but I do think that they would’ve had a falling out regardless of the murder, and I’d go as far as to say even if Bunny hadn’t been excluded from the bacchanal.

would you rather raybins be canonized in terms of them coupling in an alternative universe by stephen king himself, or get a sequel novel to the long walk written by 1960s stephen king?

This is SUCH a good question and hard to answer.

A sequel written by 1960s Stephen King would be so interesting because I’m endlessly fascinated by the headspace he was in back then, and I would love to know more about the world The Long Walk takes place in + the fate of Ray post-novel.

That being said, I think part of what makes The Long Walk so interesting to me is that it doesn’t necessarily need a sequel even with the cryptic ending we were given. I think not knowing what happened to Ray, or even Stebbins really, adds a lot of horror to their situation.

I would love to see Ray and Stebbins show up somewhere else and interact outside of the walk even if it’s just as a cameo. If there’s a universe where they weren’t picked as walkers, Ray might see Stebbins watching from the sidelines and find him just as fascinating as he did when he saw him in the tree.

I’m going to go with the alternate universe just because I’m interested in seeing what Stephen King has to say about the characters all these years later, and how their dynamic would change &/or stay the same in a universe where they’re more fortunate.

i really wish we could acknowledge the fact that garraty IS masc. like, he is literally described as well built! he weighs 160 lbs and has muscle! just because he knits and dances doesn't mean he's a twink. he can have more traditionally feminine hobbies and be a masculine queer...these two things can exist in harmony...

There’s so many people throwing around the word twink that have no idea what it means. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve seen it used as a “less offensive” alternative to calling someone a slur I’d be rich, which is wild because twink isn’t even derogatory. That being said, using twink in place of calling someone something derogatory so you don’t get called homophobic IS homophobic, and so is applying it to every man you think is queer.
