Watched "Zero Day" (2003) recently and it was such a brilliant movie. One that shouldn't be romanticized at all, may I mention, before I begin my humble analysis. (I did not check the tag yet, so I don't know if anything of what I am about to mention was already discussed.)

"Zero Day" in my opinion portrays the mind of future murderers perfectly, especially teenage ones. It also shatters the expectation that those people always follow a certain pattern — quiet, unloved, terrible home life, bullied in school, no friends and early violent tendencies.

This stereotype is mostly shattered by Cal — he has a normal social life, family life, hobbies and he behaves like an average person. Cal could be your friend. Your classmate. He appears innocent, joyful and angelic — yet out of the two of them, he seems more aware of what will happen, what they're about to do (in his alone tapes, we first see him in what could be described as a mild conflict. In the second tape, his concern is only the realisation that they'll not fulfill their full plan. That they will die. And the fact that Andre might not be aware of it). Cal jokes and laughs about his "inner evil" — but how could you believe it's true if he seems so angelic, so open? And the more open he seemed about it, the less suspicious he appears.

Now Andre, you might think, follows that stereotype more clearly — he's percieved as weird, a shut-in and we see that despite having a decent family life, it's suggested that his father may have been a bit cold towards him. Or towards life itself. He is the mind of the plan — he is the one who shows us the steps, the careful planning and the technical preparations. Because of that he might appear more evil than Cal, with that particular coldness he approaches the idea with. It's easier to frame him as "the leader", "the evil one". He's repeatedly deemed the "bad influence", with no such remarks made towards Cal.

Is one of them more or less evil? No. I personally don't believe so. "They are going to call one of us the leader" and their conversation afterwards really settled that for me. They were truly a match for each other. Cal (I believe?) tells us what I think is the truth — the thought was there before they even met. Although it might not seem objective, I believe it really was spot on. I also believe that we were meant to be presented with people who were just 'born' evil — no terrifying backstory, no shady connections, no internal battle. Nothing grand enough to justify. They were humans before a choice — to pursue evil, or not.

I loved how the winter was "too warm" for the zero day to appear as they planned. You would think someone was up there, trying to prevent it. Coming through with it despite fate seemingly tearing the opportunity away from them sealed their fate, after that, you just can't call it tragic.

Their ending was fascinating to watch — Andre's hesitance when it came to taking his own life felt really heavy. Not to mention that it was followed up by the woman's "Andre, it doesn't have to end this way". For a short while one could almost believe she was narrating Andre's thoughts. This scene also calls out Andre's hypocrisy — they are not "wasting lives", in their opinion, but when the gun's pointed at you, suddenly the perspective shifts. Cal was rageful and prepared, Andre only believed he was the latter.

Side notes:

I love how Cal's angelic appearance shatters at the end and he behaves so violently. His bizarre comments ("I can see my reflection in his blood") really gave his character a spectacular ending. All the movie, Andre was focused on killing and their plan, his approach was colder, sometimes even slightly nervous when he felt something was a threat. Cal took more pleasure from it than Andre. It can be seen through his poem recital, seemingly "reckless", and said behaviour at the end — it was all a thrill to him.

On Cal/Andre's relationship — both extremely dependent and tied to each other by their plan. They really are the perfect match, with two very alike minds. Despite some differences in lifestyles and the approach to the plan, they have no one else. Because no one else would understand, let alone accept it or join the plan. If only one of them died — that'd be the best punishment for them.
