Summer Shadows
As Eve tucked away the box, she heard the front door swing open and slam shut with a muted thwack. Footfalls crunched on gravel and snow. She leaned forward, trying to get a better view. Down below, Thomas was marching across the yard. Focused. Determined.
He paused at the crooked shed, sneaking a look back at the house as if making sure he was hidden from view. Then, out of nowhere, he exhaled a primal scream, slapping at the side of his head with a flat palm. Violent. Vicious. The type of tantrum that makes people cross the street to avoid you.
A disturbing and surprising thing to behold. Until then, Thomas had seemed to be many things, but violent certainly wasn't one of them. It only added to Eve's growing unease.
April Fool’s Day (1986)
These are my favorite horror novels and comics released in 2024, as of December. I'm sure I'll still be reading 2024 releases into next year. For comics, I used the date that the trade was released.
This is her fault. She's one of them. Those eyes, dark and cold, staring back at her through fake tears as she pretended to cower. And now Ophelia has no choice but to solve the problem she created.
Ophelia tightens her grip on the blood-slicked handle of the pickax. "Little Bird, where are you? Come say hello." Her voice, too deep somehow, rumbles out into the silence, sending a jolt through her.
No response, no sound at all except the faint pings along the wall as the electronics of emergency alert continue to signal danger, alternate panels of flashing red and too-bright white.
She edges forward down the curving corridor on level seventeen. The weight of the pickax tugs painfully on her shoulder. Swinging hard and fast so many times has tightened the muscles across her back, but the adrenaline buoyant in her veins makes the sharp ache easier to ignore.
The mining ax is not meant to be a weapon, just an old-fashioned tool for the tight corners and small veins where their other equipment can't reach, but it certainly works to split flesh and smash skulls. Gobbets of torn skin cling to the far end of the ax, mixed in with splinters of white bone and grayish clumps of brain.
Signs of a job well done. Disease being cut free of the host.
Universal Monsters: Dracula
Supernatural: Season 10 Episode 19: The Werther Project
FOURTH CASE EPISODE
PATIENT R---, A CASE STORY: INHABITED BY ANOTHER
(D = DOCTOR, P = PATIENT R---)
FOURTH EPISODE, CONDUCTED ON 8 OCTOBER 1954:
D: "Now tell me, R---: did Ruth want to hurt Mrs. K---?
P: [silence]
D: "R---? Did Ruth want to hurt Mrs. K---? Or Miss K---, for that matter?
P: "You make it out as if Ruth is a sadist. She isn't. It's just...I've read a theory once that prehistoric man sacrificed the most precious things they owned to the bogs to appease its gods and spirits. That's why we find swords and jewelry and other lovely things there. Ruth was drowned in a bog. That means she was someone's precious thing once, so precious they cut and choked and stabbed her till she finally died. It's not so strange then, is it, that Ruth sometimes shows her love for me through violence? And now I don't want to talk about it anymore."
D: "I am rushing things, aren't I? I'm sorry. I do not mean to be impatient. I merely want to understand you.
i think cas and jack are unpredictable, wild-card gift-givers.
8 out of 10 gifts they give are useful, though slightly odd. cas makes them each a homemade swiss army knife that has some common monster-killing materials (eg silver), but doesn't quite fold all the way so the user risks getting stabbed when they pocket it.
1 out of 10 are deeply thoughtful gifts that will make the recipient (dean) cry. jack finds an old photo of dean and mary and has it professionally framed for him.
the remaining 1 out of 10 is bizarre and horrifying. cas finds a set of finger bones supposedly belonging to a long-dead monk known for his depth of supernatural knowledge. he puts them in a plastic bag and gives them to sam, suggesting sam grind them and brew them into a tea.
sam gives everyone practical, useful gifts. very often books. he refuses to wrap presents because he thinks it's silly.
dean always gives everyone a gag gift and a real gift. the real gifts are generally thoughtful and often pleasantly surprising. the gag gifts are obnoxious and therefore dean's favorite part. dean has given sam the same clown-themed porno mag for the past seven years. the magazine issue was printed in 1993. sam shreds, burns, or otherwise disposes of it every year but somehow dean always gives the same magazine back to him. (dean found a whole box of them in the back of a storage unit that belonged to a skeevy witch. sam does not know this)
as with everything else in her life, eileen is dangerously good at giving gifts. no one can escape her. she finds dean's box of clown mags and gives one to sam on his birthday. sam immediately blames dean who insists he had nothing to do with it. eileen keeps the perfect poker face. no one but cas knows and he's not snitching.
I am a fellow evil older sibling. By year seven, Dean's trying to figure out if getting a gift card and having a server at Sam's favorite restaurant slip a page in the menu is a feasible plan or if he has to learn to decoupage. You have to go bigger each year. It's a curse.
