what book was it that you read about women who were mushrooms, please? :O
Wife Shaped Bodies, by Laura Cranehill!
Great, odd scifi, similar to Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang in terms of its vision of a future where something nonhuman is eclipsing human dominance. Admittedly, a little overwritten---but I liked Adam Nevill's The House of Small Shadows too, despite his same too-florid tendencies. I can stomach too-expressive, too-emotional writing, as long as I believe the author believes it. Maybe other people prize weary, too-knowing ennui, but I want someone to sweep me off my feet with the absolute sincerity of their perspective, I want you to convince me you're right, true and correct, and drag me along into the horror of being right/correct and in a horror story nevertheless.
It's a very fun book.
