I just wanted to add this quote from the peppermint patty peanuts wiki page about Charles M. Schulz and his relationship with his gay cousin. The source here leads to a book that I did not read but the original source is Schulz's wife who confirmed this in an interview. If I can find the interview again I will link it here but uh. just in case someone tries to claim Schulz was a homophobe on this post again.
i read something so so fascinating about hamlet and particularly opheliaβs role in it a while back (when working on my ophelia & abortion paper) which is, summarily, that ophelia does not obey the βexpectedβ behavior of a love interest as typical for early modern drama at this time, including in shakespeareβs own works. simply put? she denies her own desires and obeys her father. this was not the case for virtually every other early modern women βlove interestβ! (scare quotes because ophelia is far far more than a love interest, but it is one of her many roles in the play.) women in early modern drama did not obey their fathers, they chased after/worked hand in hand with their beloveds. juliet is an obvious and probably the most well-known example, but desdemona also defies her fatherβs preferences to marry othello, bianca defies baptisa, etc. and so it is deeply fascinating that, at least on one level, ophelia chooses to obey her fatherβs wishes and thus denies her own desire to be with hamlet. (and the fact that ophelia even βhelpsβ her father investigate hamlet was even more a distortion of the aforementioned early modern theatrical tropeβdaughters helping their fathers against their beloveds simply was not done.)
which of course creates a fascinating parallel: ophelia does not fulfill her desire just as hamlet does not fulfill his revenge. these characters are defined by what they do not do throughout the play. from this alone, it is easy to argue that hamlet and ophelia are the most clearly defined foils in all of hamlet, but the reasons go on and onβthey are the only two characters who experience madness, they both prioritize obedience to their fathers above all, ophelia is the only character to verbally match hamletβs wit, etc.

its just insane to me that you can watch the entirety of twin peaks and come to the conclusion that audrey and dale should've been together. this show is about how dangerous it is for men to think that they are entitled to women and will place romantic/sexual relationships above all else. leland kills laura because he thinks he has ownership over her as both a father and lover. leo controls shelly because he sees no value in her beyond being a servant to him. audrey's own father does not pay a shred of attention towards her because he cannot love her like he loved laura. dale is the only man who has ever treated audrey with respect and he knows it. audrey conflates his care with romantic affection, and whilst she is genuinely in love with him, it's misguided because she has never had anyone, especially a man, be so considerate towards her. dale is the figure all these women so desperately needed in their lives, a man who cared for, understood, and respected them. he never put his personal wants above what audrey truly needed: a friend and guardian.
