regressors who are just so, so sleepy and their cgs who know and are already preparing for put down.

infant regressors who cry and whine, feeling their body tighten up and the blanket of sleep making them cranky and their caregiver who picks them up gently. cooing at them and letting their little baby cling to them till they settled in their crib.

toddler regressors who yawn while they put up a fight, claiming they're too big for nap time and their wide awake anyways. their eyes falling heavy and the rapid movements of play time become slow and steady, words between action figures and dolls becomes mumbled. caregiver who chuckles at the scene and makes sure to sit close by, giving their kiddo the chance to cuddle up before sending them to dreamland.

kid regressors who know they're drifting off and can get themselves to bed with no problem, but still sheepishly ask their caregiver to help them. getting them tucked in, mumbling and rambling about different things in the process, and one final kiss on the temple to seal it all together.

teenage regressors who think they're too old for naps, but the weight of the world exhausts them. who texts their cg about taking a nap, sending emoticons to match and explaining it feels childish in a way. and their caregiver smiling to themself as they explain you'll always be their baby.

Like, no this character isn't using a pacifier or gripping onto a plushie or padded or wearing childing clothing, but they are hiding behind their most trusted person in the friend group, either a parental figure or close friend, when things feel too big and new.

They aren't crying out for mommy or daddy, or throwing a tantrum, but they're sobbing to themselves in the middle of the night, clutching their pillow like a person, because everything feels too big and too much

They aren't burying themselves in pacifiers, teethers, or plushies, but they're chewing on their shirt or hand when they get anxious and hugging their pillow to their chest like a lifeline

Okay so technically I have a sideblog for this but I'm putting it here bc I like to yap

I think jax should age regress. Both as a thing she gets to do and also a thing she has to exist with. Because like, from a character standpoint. Every since she was a child she's been put into this box, this box where she's the boy, the big strong scary mean boy that's too manly and not manly enough, the little kid in the body growing up wrong without her, the kid that's not allowed to be vulnerable and soft as both a safety precaution and a household rule. She's always been too much and never enough. Her life and behavior is based on the survivalistic need to keep all vulnerability, any hint of genuine feeling or genuine car, anything soft and mushy and pathetic, locked away in her chest till it kills her.

And with age regression, it's like. On the one hand it's an involuntary terror. Being forced into vulnerability whether you want to be there or not. Melting down so catastrophically that the walls you build up fall on top of you and bury you so deeply you can barely breathe between the crying and screaming and kicking, the kind of meltdown that got her pinned to the ground and reprimanded for (points at my other hc that jax is very autistic and was in special education as a little kid). The terror of not just your own feelings, but waiting for the other shoe to drop. Because an outburst doesn't go un-reprimanded.

But on the other hand it can be a safe haven. Because you're a little kid again crying so hard you almost vomit and you're waiting for the punishment and it just doesn't come. And to me I think people like pomni and ragatha would be gentle to her to the best of their ability. You're a little girl and the world is terrifying and your emotions might just destroy you from the inside out and it's all too much... but for a reason you can't fathom, the other shoe doesn't drop. You're safe. She's safe. It's a moment of reprieve, a moment when the weight seems a little less. Because she's vulnerable, and it's okay.

I think that the first few times it happens, it's completely on accident. Like what happens to me sometimes, a total breakdown turning into regression as a safety and coping mechanism. It's not pretty or ideal. But she's safe. She's able to be calmed down. There are people that care about her and are holding her gingerly. And I think after a while, once the initial hurdle of denial and discomfort falls behind, it's something she seeks out. Would she admit that? Oh god no. At least not for a while. But there's a deep comfort in allowing yourself to be small. The idealized childhood where you're safe and nobody will hurt you. The play-pretend world where you're allowed to be vulnerable, to be yourself.

And to conclude, the moral of this post is that you should take the bunny and make her little and think about her happy with a coloring book and a juice box having a grand time. Sorry, it's the law.
