Hey so yall have seen that post about Dr. James Barry right?
Dude was trans, and pioneered a lot of gynecology. Turns out thereâs a movie currently being made about him, except:
Hmm.
Hmm.
HMM.
this crosses the line of plausibly deniable ignorance and careens straight into the territory of intentionally erasing our stories and our history.
im still on this actually. doctor barryâs personal notes and journals describe him feeling what we would now be able to easily identify as dysphoria and he did not work as hard as he did to be recognized as a man just to be played by a cis actress and have everything he did written off as âa woman pretending to be a man.â between this and the narrowly avoided disaster that would have been rub and tug, hollywood seems to be systematically dismantling the history of trans people and erasing our heroes, saying that the whole time, they really were just their agab. you know, the same thing that has been said about every trans person throughout history.
give this the same uproar that rub and tug got. donât let this rest until everything about this movie is either scrapped or changed. do not let a million cis peopleâs introduction to doctor barry be that he was a woman when he spent so much of his life escaping that very perception.
I checked the IMDB page to see if anything has been changed and
still bad but slightly better BUT hereâs the kicker:
Nothing else has changed, heâs still being played by a woman.
Donât harass Rachel Weisz. Donât harass Nick Yarborough. But reach out. Question motivations. This definitely deserves as much attention as Rug and Tug and we absolutely donât need another Danish Girl.
