“Bogie was a Christmas baby, so I decided to give him a surprise party on Christmas Eve. I gathered Benchley, Butterworth McCain, Nunnally, Hellinger, Delehanty, Sheekman, Pat O’Moore, Ray Massey- about twenty in all - and made them stand in the tub. They looked funny and silly, all with glasses in their hands, crushed together in a blue sunken tub- an unlikely sight. When Bogie came in I greeted him with a drink as usual The tree was lit, the living room looked festive. It was very sentimental- our first Christmas as man and wife. Bogie wanted to go downstairs, but i said that something was wrong with the tub- could he take a look at it first? I led him toward the door, opened it, turned on the light- all those ridiculous faces in the bathtub shouting ‘Surprise!’ completely threw him off balance It was the only surprise party he’d ever had- he couldn’t get over it. Humphrey Bogart had always been known to enjoy drinking and on night in 1949 he was drinking with a friend in the El Morocco Nightclub at 4 a.m. Sitting in the booth with them were two giant toy pandas that Bogart had bought for his son earlier that evening. They were approached by woman who was “under the influence of a few drinks” and she tried to take away one of the Pandas. Bogart tried to get rid of the woman and shouted:

Get away from me, I’m a happily married man and don’t touch my Panda.

He was then reported to have pushed the woman away and she fell on the floor. She later claimed that he had used excessive force which, she claimed, bruised and humiliated her. She charged him with assault and sued him for $25,000.

Bogart was mortified when he realised what he had done, however he decided to fight the charges in court and won on the grounds that the whole case was an attempt at polite blackmail and cheap publicity for the woman.

After the hearing, Bogart told reporters:

This is a free country isn’t it? I can take my Panda any place I want to. And if I wanna buy it a drink, that’s my business.

The incident however, did not tarnish Bogart’s reputation, as Warner Bros feared it might. It only reinforced his image as a wise-cracking, smart guy who knew how to handle the dames.
