Kelly Jo: hmm. it’s not a hard and fast tradition, but most years my family travels for christmas, so we have christmas morning in a hotel. we have purchased two tiny trees (like two feet tall) that we either pack in the car or check in for our flight and do christmas under that tiny tree, which I think is fun.

Josie: if I do it right, it takes me about an hour. HOWEVER, for the past month and a half I have NOT been able to get out of bed before 6:45. this is bad because I have to leave at seven. Fun fact: I commute 1.5 hours each way to dc every day 🥴

Funny side story, I was under the opposite misconception when I was 7ish. My parents (who are fairly liberal atheists and not at all fundie) explained what sex was and that it was how babies are made, so I thought "oh, ok so this is something you only do when you want to have a baby." Like if you had 4 kids, that meant you had sex 4 times in your life.

In middle school, I learned from my abstinence-only sex ed (yay Arizona) that sex feels good and people enjoy having it. But I was still thinking "ah ok, so it feels good, which is why people resort to other sexual activities, like blow jobs, or birth control methods to avoid the baby." It wasn't until mid-high-school that I found out that people could have unprotected sex and not get pregnant.

Anyway, not fundie related, just a weird story from my childhood

honestly, the Sims games had me believing in grade 6-7ish that you can have sex but you only get pregnant if you’re specifically trying for a baby. ya, I was a little duped when I found out that wasn’t the case. I wish it was!

Elisha - How would you pronounce the name?

I pronounce it as Elijah, because it’s a male name, but I’ve learnt that Elisha Cuthbert pronounces her name as Alicia.

Anyone know the ‘correct’ way to pronounce it? Is it normal for English speakers to pronounce a name differently because of the sex it’s associated with?

Elisha is pronounced like Alicia (el-eeesh-uh). Alicia and Elisha have different roots - Alicia is Germanic whereas Elisha is Hebrew. In the Bible, Elisha was a male disciple of Elijah.

My church always pronounced it like el-eye-shuh. Very similar to how Elijah was said, which was confusing for little kids trying to learn the differences between the two, but not exactly the same, because the sh and j did not have the same sound.

just a thought, i can’t wait to have a kid and let them make the gaudiest, kid-like choices about their belongings and appearance. my parents asked what color i wanted my room when I was five, and i said hot pink. my room was that color, affectionately dubbed “screaming pink,” until i was like 15. i made horrible choices dying my hair when I was a teenager, but i loved it. i wrote song lyrics on my wall when I was deep in my emo music phase, and my parents didn’t get mad because it could simply be painted over. i was so lucky that my parents realized that a lot of things teens and kids want to do aren’t all that big of a deal, and it makes me exhausted when I see parents gatekeeping certain experiences simply because historically it’s “not normal.”

ok i’m currently in the bahamas for work (I work in disaster response) and I finally had time to look into this MEDIC corps thing a lot of fundies are apparently part of. I have a number of questions for whoever is in charge of their marketing, including:

1) if the team is called the Medical Evacuation Disaster Intervention Corps, why is the abbreviation MEDIC Corps? that’s corps twice???

2) maybe i’m being picky bc technically there’s a bunch of Cay’s off of it, but they keep referring to Abaco as “The Abacos” and I haven’t heard a single person here refer to it in the plural and it’s really making my head spin

3) everytime i go into the field i wear long cargo pants even though it’s hot as hell and humid and we’re like two months out. i don’t care that fundies wear skirts obviously, but in a disaster? especially since they were in Abaco? and when they were here in the beginning of september when things were still really bad? shit even if I wasn’t worried about debris and stuff, the mosquitos here are absolutely vicious and i’m getting eaten alive
