GOD I'm having flashbacks
Okay so I never went to like, smaller church camps, with only my church as I was growing up (not sure if this is whay this person is referring to or not), but I went to Soul Survivor three times as a teenager and my husband went to Newday from age 11 - 18 and it was so formulaic.
There was such a specific format for how the days would go, and how the day would go, and it was all in the name of eliciting a "god response".
Like, people (teenagers) would literally be in the evening meeting just absolutely wailing, bawling, screaming, falling over "in the spirit". It was absolutely, utterly, terrifying and at the same time, completely normalised.
I mention my husband because he would rely on this week at this youth festival as his emotional release for the whole year. It was one the only places he felt he was "allowed" to not only be openly emotional, but be praised for it. Like the bigger your "god response", the better christian you were.
I remember one year in particular, sitting in a tent at midnight, with three of my friends, and sharing some of the most awful, dark stuff (TW), talking about self-harm, abuse, suicidal ideation/attempts and then in the morning getting up and talking about how great God was, and all the wonderful things he was doing for us. Looking back, it just makes me feel a bit ill.
I really don't know what point I'm trying to make, or where I'm going with this, but the fact that this is such a universal Christian experience really stuns me.

Jinger did an article with People Mag today. She revealed she was asked to participate in the Shiny Happy People Doc but decided against it because she wanted creative control and to honor God. Is she possibly saying Jill did not honor God by being a part of the doc or am I reaching?
