It’s super interesting to see how Sebastian is this cold and callous demon and has no remorse for the death of others and is selfish in obtaining only one thing. It’s funny how as the manga progressed and as the timeline went on since our Ciel developed as a character since meeting Sebastian and making the contract how he slowly turned into that same callous and almost cruel person himself. It’s as if he’s turning into his own demon.

Ch138 spoiler: Liar Liar (text only)

Looking at fan translations before the licensed release, it might really be the case that Sebastian is only telling truths to our earl (not necessarily to others) and that the demon doesn’t seem to have a personal aesthetic regarding lies…. Even here, he’s not exactly lying, but it’s just not cool to offer making the kid think his brother is still alive. And the kid realizes it would all be living a lie, so he doesn’t want it.

And this chapter apparently ends with Sebastian finally adding, as a sort of intentional afterthought (paraphrased) “oh, by the way, you’ve just agreed to let me eat your soul when this is all said and done!” Uh… Sebastian, didn’t you just agree to not betray the boy? You tricky POS. 😈🤨 When making the contract, our earl didn’t know he’d have to give up his own soul, too. He seems to have initially thought the sacrifice of his brother was enough to not just summon the demon but also get his wishes granted. (Now we have to wonder whether the demon’s previous “truth” about our earl being the one to sacrifice his brother is really true… or more like an “alternative fact”….)

This would explain Sebastian’s comment to our earl during the Jack the Ripper case, when Sebastian says “you know what I’m like” or “you know how I am” after our earl realizes that Sebastian knew who the culprit/s was/were but didn’t tell him simply because he hadn’t been directly asked. Not lying, not betraying, and yet still being very deceptive.

No wonder our earl says, at the end of the green witch arc, that he can trust Sebastian the least. Now we really see why.

All the playful rivalry moves we’ve seen between them don’t seem nearly so playful anymore. I mean, they kind of are, but….

It’s interesting to take note what Sebastian says is one of his actual personal aesthetics: not making double or multiple contracts. He says the lowest of demons might do that, but he doesn’t because he finds it unaesthetic. (This is interesting when you think about what Hannah does in s2 of the anime. According to Sebastian in the manga, she would be among the lowest of demons for making a contract with both Jim/Alois and “Ciel”.)

Something else we have to consider? Our earl introduces himself as “Ciel Phantomhive” to the demon, and we aren’t sure whether the demon knew this was false (just yet, since he obviously knows it later).

Sebastian has tossed in “not making multiple contracts” as a freebie, since he doesn’t make them anyway.

And neither of them expected the real Ciel to return (in any way)…. That’s why our earl called Sebastian out on his offer to make him think Ciel is still alive. And why he questions Sebastian’s honesty about Ciel being dead when they see the carved message on the wall.

So, if real Ciel now demands that he’s Sebastian’s true master? Since Sebastian made the contract with “Ciel”? I know that our earl is the one with the seal on his eye, and that Sebastian told our earl “you are my only master”, but….

What if real Ciel’s return creates some weird loophole that causes Sebastian to breach the contract because he cannot serve two masters? I’ve posted about this general idea before, but ch138 sheds new light on their contract… and creates new questions.

I haven’t felt like rambling about a Kuro chapter in a while, but chapter 138 made me appreciate OC even more -- if that’s even possible lol 

His family was murdered, he saw the corpses of his parents, he was kidnapped and sold to a bunch of perverted cultists, he was emotionally, psychologically and physically tortured by them, and he watched his twin brother die without being able to do anything to help. 

BUT he still had the strength to calmly sit down and discuss a contract he is about to do with a demon with his brother’s corpse hanging above his head and a bunch of dead people around them. 

This little 10-year-old is so strong, honestly.

Yana could have skipped this whole chapter because we already know all of this, but she didn’t. This chapter seems to be a reminder for the readers of what OC agreed to. I think the contract will become relevant again soon.

RC’s return not only turns Sebastian’s statement into a lie but compromises OC’s goals to get his revenge. At least, to some extent. Sebastian already tried to claim OC’s soul in the Green Witch arc because he wasn’t “serious” about his revenge. OC can’t simply change his mind along the way. He needs to keep going and RC’s arrival might delay him a little bit.
