I made a bunch of dried citrus garland and ornaments this year, and if you’re looking for low-budget high-impact gift ideas for the holiday season, I cannot recommend this enough. I have had nearly all of my aunts reach out to ask me for these already.
All you do is take oranges (and grapefruit, in my case, but you could use any citrus fruit, lemon and limes included. You could also do slices of apple or other fruits, but they don’t dry as pretty) and cut them into slim, even slices. Blot the slices as dry as you can get them with paper towel, then lay them flat on drying racks, if you have them, or cookie sheets if you don’t. The cookie sheets will take longer, but will probably produce flatter slices at the end. If you want to, you can take cloves and push them into the slices before you dry them; the oranges should contract around them and hold them in place.
Put these into the oven at 200-220 degrees F (93 C), and bake for at least 4 hours. Check them hourly; it may take up to 7 hours, depending on the thickness of your slices and oven air circulation. Take them out when they no longer feel wet or sticky to the touch.
A 5 lb bag of navel oranges was enough to garland most of this tree. All you need for that is a thick needle and some string (DMC embroidery floss works well, and is less than a dollar a skein at walmart and other chain stores). You just tie off the first orange, and then use the needle to go in and out each slice near the edges. If you’re making ornaments, check your local dollar store for bits of ribbon, jingle bells, beads or whatever else seems good to you. A hot glue gun is helpful but not necessary; all the ornaments here are just tied together.
I have plenty of herbs drying in my cupboard, so I also used some sprigs of rosemary and lavender, plus cinnamon sticks, cloves, and allspice. Rosemary is easy to find as live plants in the grocery section, and you can trim some off without killing the plant (and then you have i n f i n i t e r o s e m a r y). Get creative!
These smell fantastic, and should last multiple seasons if they’re dried allll the way and stored in airtight containers. (I chucked some of the odd bits into my mulling spices, which is lovely.) They’re a very old method of decorating and look beautiful even when they’re not perfect. If you’ve made these before, I’d love to see what you made!
I’ve got this year’s batch in the oven, and a couple notes: a mandoline cutter and smaller oranges do make this easier, as does baking them on drying racks. Make sure you’re checking on them with some frequency after the first hour, so nothing burns.
This set– years old now– gets stored in a popcorn tin and has been totally fine even stored in the not-temperature-controlled garage.
These make for fun ornaments, but they’re also edible– they make a nice addition to a mulling spice mix, or to black tea.
Happy Pride Month!

This is also why I don't know how to recommend spells to people because to me most spells are just:
Find a Guy who's really good at the thing (probably other people talk about how good he is)
Ask him to do the thing for you
Provide auxiliary support to make his job easier (and say please and thank you!)
And one Guy can often do a lot of things. Like, Rosemary can help with memory problems, sleep, cleansing, protection, healing, and nightmares.
So you can show up and say, "Rosemary, when I drink this tea of you, please infuse me with good memory so I can remember important details of this upcoming conversation."
Or, "Rosemary, when I hang up this sachet of you, please stand as a sentinel of my sleep and guard against bad dreams."
Or, "Rosemary, when I place your pot by the front door, please cleanse the air of all sickness that may enter, and keep the home healthy."
(And yeah, there are Techniques to this, but that's not what this post is about)
But the problem is that sometimes, the Guy might not be that helpful until you get to know him a little more and things get chill between you two. Or he might show you hidden aspects to himself that are not common and not talked about by other people.
So you can get into a situation where you've been hanging with Rosemary for a while and have a really weird dream and all of the sudden, Rosemary can make other people tell you the truth.
That's not a Rosemary correspondence and it's probably not something that other people can do with Rosemary.
But it's something you can do with Rosemary because you've gotten to know each other on a friend level.
A missing factor for me, and maybe for other people, was treating spellwork like a potion-making game where you just gather X amount of Y-aligned correspondence and if you mix enough of them you get a Potion of Y.
Like if you need protection, you just go to a correspondence list and find enough Protection-aligned plants (regardless of how they work or their personalities or attributes) and put them together in a bag and saying an unrelated charm or prayer that you say no matter which plants you put in the bag.
Which is how people end up with 50 little jars of dead plants that stay dead because they have no connection to them, still looking up what ingredients to use in which spells.
Which is fine, but it's also like... not necessarily what everyone is looking for.
So my point is that if correspondences are reduced to 4-5 purposes on a chart, then you get the correspondence brainrot which is like "which kitchen herb is a gentle cleanser, and which kitchen herb is a strong cleanser," when the reality is that if a guy can Cleanse he can show up gently or strongly in his own unique way,
And it all makes more sense by just treating him like a Guy and asking him to do what you need to do.
I genuinely think that if a practitioner is looking for something deeper and more relational in their practice, a really good way is to scale everything back and start using like one activated (evoked, prayed over, petitioned, etc.) Ally in each spell and just asking if he, as a Guy, can or wants to do something for you.
Like if you go absolutely bonkers over a good cup of Chamomile tea, what's the harm in asking Chamomile to cleanse for you? What's the harm in asking Chamomile to protect your home, or bless your sleep?
At the very least you're going to begin learning a lot about Chamomile in an interpersonal way, where you can begin understanding the "correspondence" for yourself. And you can also learn some fucking cool stuff, like, isn't it weird that when I ask Chamomile to protect my home, we all started finding little bits of cash we had lost?
Idk. Magic is just easier when more things are Guys.

Death comes in many forms.
It can come in the literal form - the ending of a life.
It can come in the form of loss with the finality of any relationship.
It can come in the form of transformation, shedding your old skin to replace it with something new.
It can come in the form of learning, replacing old knowledge that's no longer useful or accurate.
It can come in the form of music after the end of your favorite song.
It can come in the form of relief when a moment of strong tension is finally released.
It can come in the form of breath - an exhale leaving your body.
Death comes in many forms.
I was thinking about the healing crystals thing again, and why aren't there rocks that make your life worse instead of better?
like, if there are crystals that spiritually heal me and improve my relationships, it seems like there should be some that make me sexually frustrated, attract toxic people into my life, increase my anxiety, and scare away my spirit guides. I think that would be both logical and funny.
...Anyway I was on wikipedia and there are lots of minerals and rocks.
Why did I do this

Witchcraft Exercise - Creating Correspondences
There are dozens of plant species in the arsenal of the green witch. Commonly-used varieties and usage varies somewhat between traditions, but most of us are fairly familiar with industry standards like basil, bay, rosemary, sage, and so on.
But what do you do when faced with a plant that has no listed magical correspondences anywhere that you can find in your witchcraft library? Simple - you create some.
Allow me to demonstrate with a little plant I found in my own backyard. It's a common weed called Virginia copperleaf (Acalypha virginica). But despite it's widespread range and abundant growth as a field weed, there are surprisingly few references to the plant in regional folk medicine and none at all that I could find in contemporary witchcraft.
So in order to incorporate this hardy little weed into my practice, I set about creating some correspondences for it.
First, I researched the physical properties of the plant. It is a small annual spurge with long taproots, a resistance to drought and many herbicides, and a reputation for fast growth and being difficult to eradicate from fields due to prolific seeding. The leaves turn coppery-red in the fall and small spiky flowers bloom among the foliage. It is also mildly poisonous. The juice of the plant may cause contact dermatitis or a mild rash in some people and if ingested, it may cause GI symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea.
Next, I researched references to the plant in folk medicine. I could only find a single reference that cited copperleaf as a possible diuretic and expectorant. That does track with the previous mention of GI symptoms, but it doesn't mean the plant is safe to use. I did discover that an alternate name for the plant is three-seeded mercury or mercury weed, likely because of its' tendency for fast growth and the fact that it is propagated by the wind.
So now comes the business of creating the correspondences, using the physical properties of the plant as a basis.
The first and most obvious association is strength. Any weed that is resistant to drought and herbicide and uprooting is bound to be useful for spells involving tenacity and fortitude. Prosperity is also a likely use, both because of the name copperleaf and the way in which the plant grows and spreads quickly. Because of the alternate name mercury weed and the wind propagation, it could be used for wind magic or communication spells. (I often associate the element of air with communication and the name of a messenger god is right there as well, but your mileage may vary.)
The plant could also be used as an ingredient for baneful magic, either to bind and frustrate someone's efforts by consuming available ground where their ambitions might grow, or in its' capacity as a mild poison, to cause physical discomfort and stomach trouble.
So in the end, I have a handful of copperleaf and a listing in my witchbook that details the properties of the plant and notes that it could be useful for spells involving strength, tenacity, prosperity, wind, or communication, as well as possible baneful uses including binding, discomfort, and sickness.
This is my system for assigning correspondences to previously-unknown plants, and I encourage readers to use it as a template for their own practices or to create their own system. Either way, I recommend the use of a field guide or plant identification app like PlantNet to properly identify plants as you find them. Remember to forage and harvest responsibly, be a good steward of the land around you, and always label your plant cuttings.
Happy Witching! 💚🌿

Sorry if you've been asked about this before, but do you have any insight into the more recent trend (I think recent anyway) of systems claiming that otherkin/singlets "steal terminology" from the DID community? More recently I keep seeing introjects essentially saying kinfolk are just 'larping' and only systems are really xyz. But I've never really seen explained what exactly we are "stealing" from systems, it really just confusing me. If you don't want to answer or don't have any input no worries, have a nice day either way 🖤
I honestly have no goddamn idea where that’s coming from, it confuses me too. Literally all of the terms I’ve seen people claim that with are either nonspecific or originated with the otherkin and therian communities - usually it’s “shifting,” which, people seem to think that that came from switching, which it didn’t, or “switching” itself, which we… don’t use? Once I saw someone say it about “species dysphoria,” which I’m pretty sure originated with us but either way is in no way system-specific. As far as I’m aware, there’s fairly little overlap in terminology between our communities (outside of, like. basic words like “nonhuman” that aren’t specific to either of us, I mean) to be accused of “stealing” in the first place, and so far I’ve yet to see a claim that wasn’t easily debunked with like five minutes of research.
Overall, as far as I can tell it just seems to be people insisting that only system members, typically only DID introjects specifically, can “really” be nonhuman/fictional, which is bluntly kind of just tiresome and ridiculous. I understand the instinct to defend yourself when the world often tries to decry you as either crazy or roleplayers, but turning around and turning the “that’s not real” on other people is not helping anything. It also often seems to be tied to this idea that if your experiences are similar to a medically recognized phenomenon, they either must be that phenomenon or they’re not real at all (and if you claim they are, you’re either faking or wrong). Which is the same idea that fuels a lot of anti-endo sentiment (which, a lot of the admittedly small group of people I’ve seen yelling about this seem to be both anti-endo and mixing up endogenic systems and otherkin).
But, that being said, I haven’t seen much of this firsthand and I’m not exactly deep in the syscourse - if any plural folks have insight, please feel free to chime in in the notes?
I’m a therian in a system, and one of my alters is (definitionally, though he doesn’t identify with the term) otherkin. I’m not very involved in active syscourse either, but I can’t think of any word or concept that otherkin could be “stealing” from systems. Otherkin aren’t LARPing any more than systems are, either (which, to be clear, is 0%). “Shifting” and “switching” are kinda¿ similar concepts, but idk whether either came from the other etymologically (it doesn’t seem likely to me, as a guess). The most significant difference, I think, is that to “switch” as a system is to change between independent identities, basically to become another person (this is simplifying, of course), whereas to “shift” as otherkin is to change your own identity to be more like your kintype’s, which is also you. I am my theriotypes in a way that I am not my alters (nor am I my alter’s kintype, and vice versa). Fictive introjects in systems are similar to fictionkin imo, except again the difference is whether you, the individual, are that fictotype. Like, the alter I mentioned above could be called fictionkin when referring to only himself, but as an alter he’s a fictive (and I’m neither).
“Species dysphoria” is a controversial term as far as I’ve seen, but I think it’s perfectly fine. Some people have a problem with it because they think it delegitimises people who experience gender dysphoria. As a trans therian who experiences gender and species dysphoria (and the alter I’ve mentioned has both way worse than me), I can confirm that both are real (in the subjective-experience sense, if nothing else), and they’re in no way related except that they’re both, by definition, kinds of dysphoria. “Dysphoria” basically means “a deep discomfort” (again, simplifying, don’t come at me); gender dysphoria is a deep discomfort relating to one’s gender, and species dysphoria is a deep discomfort relating to one’s species. One isn’t relevant to the other.
and I’m just gonna second the entire penultimate paragraph of @a-dragons-journal’s response
