i love mastermind’s tongue in cheek perspective. Taylor’s talked time and time again about fate and invisible string and the insolubility of destiny, and it’s something it seems clear she believes deeply in.
And here she turns it on it’s head and says oh yeah what if: I was twisting keys and working tirelessly, setting the stage to make this all happen and it was completely planned? By me? I love it bc it reflects that underlying feeling you have when there’s something new (it’s delicate) and you feel like you have to try to not break it. you make sure to text back promptly, you maybe do cancel your plans in case they call, you worry if you say too much (or too little), you want to make it work so badly you do plan because if you don’t plan you feel sure you’ll fail. (And I love that she explains that this need to do this, is something with roots in her childhood)
But the funny thing is that even the sneakiest masterminds can’t truly control other peoples ability to love. Your lover may be a cowboy like you, but you didn’t trick anyone into anything. And when she saw that smirk she finally realized that.
The lingering question from Mastermind is intriguing though: when someone DOES mastermind something - is that them intervening in destiny, or was that part of fates plan all along?
