I just love this stuff so much….. We have short-faced dogs and cats, like pugs and persians, and I’ve always wondered if short-faced bird breeds exist…. They do…. THEY DO!!!!

Brachycephaly (short face) can create some really unique looking breeds but sadly it’s usually detrimental to any species it is bred into. shortening the skull so much within so few generations usually means the soft tissue is crammed.

In cats and dogs it obstructs airways, crowds teeth, and compromises their ability to groom and thermoregulate. Brachycephalic rabbits often have dental issues because a lot of brachys have malocclusion, which is extremely bad in an animal that has to wear down its teeth.

Scientists have also isolated the DISHEVELLED 2 gene in dogs that is related to similar genes in humans linked to Robinow. The DVL2 mutation is present in 100% of surveyed purebred English Bulldog populations, most French Bulldogs, and many Boston Terries. It gives them their tiny kinked tailed but also causes facial and spinal abnormalities.

Extreme brachycephaly in pigeons can interfere with the parents ability to feed chicks and preening. Granted some pigeons can look deceptively brachy because of the cere hiding beak length but there’s really no reason to be breeding such extreme birds. Mellifex breeds some adorable moderate Lucernes for comparison.

Humans born with a disorder like Robinow had a sudden unexpected mutation, but in the context of animals we are intentionally breeding those deformities into them. It’s one thing for researchers to raise these animals to improve medicine, but they are almost exclusively being bred just because people like to look at them despite being a net negative for the animal’s wellbeing.

I agree the science is really cool but those pigeons have no business looking like that and it’s not adorable

Your complete library of crochet stitches - Gathered ^^^ Abbreviations, how to read crochet patterns [this is for written ones], learning types of yarn and various types of stitches ^^^ I would HIGHLY suggest looking at video tutorials before looking at written patterns! Watching the videos allows you to SEE the motions of what you need to do. And make sure you look up SPECIFICALLY beginner tutorials! Learning the basic stitches, how to chain, make a slipknot and a magic circle/ring/hoop/whatever you hear it being called by will help you basically do anything afterwards! If you ever need help or maybe some vids to try when you're ready, I have plenty! And one thing to remember about crochet is that you can take it apart and do it OVER and OVER again if you are unhappy w/your results! Practice stitches by making up a chain and doing/undoing it again and again until you learn the motions and what needs to be done!

^^^ THESE LITTLE GUYS WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND. TRUST ME. YOU WILL NEED THEM!!!!!! ^^^ Stitches markers are very important when it comes to keeping your place in a pattern! Bc some of them can be V E R Y long and have you count a fairly high number of stitches! Don't lose your place or you'll have to start from the beginning again!

^^^ Controlling your tension when holding your yarn is important too!!!! ^^^ If you hold too tightly, you won't be able to pull your work through loops and such. Hold too loosely and everything will become harder to work with. You need a nice even and balanced tension! Not too tight, but not too loose as well. It's also a good idea to learn both the US and UK terms for stitches n such. If you need more help, I'd be happy to provide! :)
