Can't help but giggle is my favorite genre
would you be so kind as to fall in love with me?
I made Part 2 already! Wow, this sequel thing is easy! *is blown to a smithereen by an amygdala laser*
almost got me right in my Both Eyes!
I'm neither exaggerating nor being dramatic when I say this moment has ruined me. Whenever I think about anything sad or tragic about Twilight, I always come back to this moment, of him calling out to his mom.
It's an incredibly vulnerable moment for him, and while it's not rare for fictional male characters to think fondly of their tragically lost mothers, such cases can very easily appear forced, stereotypical, or even shallow. And I feel like this happens when they're used to romanticize the male character in question, to give him a soft edge by appealing to the audience's emotions. It can be especially jarring when the narrative itself doesn't often focus on the characters' emotions.
But Twilight was given soft edges from the very first chapter, along with many more examples as the story continued. This isn't a "Aw he's got a soft spot!" it's a "Oh that's where it came from!" Because this moment shows that Twilight's capacity of love that he's been suppressing all along came from his mother's love. That when he was reminded of her for the first time in who knows how long, he internally called out to her.
It's not a sign of his capacity to love (because we already know he has that), it's a sign of his deeply buried longing for it. In that moment he's compromised both physically (through having been knocked out) and emotionally (through being reminded of his mother singing him to sleep). And what he does is call out to a loved one. Someone he both loved and was loved by.
It's a crucial moment for me because it's an example of one of my favourite parts of this story: that Endo does not only not shy away from showing the characters being emotional, he uses that emotionality as the core of the story's humanity. Proudly pointing out that our biggest strength is our capacity to love one another and to be with each other.
And it's the pride in this moment. It's the care with which such moments are emphasized.
This is an image painted with love. It wants us to focus on it and to absorb it fully. And it's saying, "This is what it's all about." So having Twilight, the most emotionally repressed character of the story, not only start this scene with an incredibly vulnerable moment, but also end it with careful but honest acceptance of some feelings, makes that point stand out even stronger.

I forgot I made this vulnerable art last night but thank you for the kindness on this piece. it hurts to think abt it.
I keep seeing this post about how Knives Out went to these insane lengths to allow Benoit Blanc to wear glasses and it drives me nuts. Because it is honestly not that hard to account for lens glare on glasses while filming a movie. What Knives Out did is markedly more batshit.
They built special rigging to make the glare on the lense accurate to the space in which he's supposed to be. Mindblowingly unhinged. Special lighting rigs to add the most minute sense of realism to the film. I can not emphasize enough how ungodly insane that is as a lighting choice. It is a fucking chef's kiss of filmmaking. It is fucking showing off. It is iconic and is honest to got something lighting teachers are gonna be teaching film students for decades.
