Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge [06-08-04]
NO MORE!
Bad wolf
found “How To Be A Time Lord” in a shop today and i was flicking through and I found this tribute to the awesomeness of Rose Tyler and I just
For the “wrist warmers” I found a loose fitted cream colored sweater at Good Will (on the same trip I also found a Castiel trench coat too!). I used the same dying process with the tea but was a bit gentler with the distressing. Since yarn can easily unwind itself, I only made a few snips and cuts where the inside of your elbow would be. I kept the sweater part long because I knew they would never stay up on their own. On the morning of NYCC I pinned the ends of the sweater to the bottoms of the sleeves (underneath the fabric) of the lacy top so they would stop slouching and falling down. This helped so much because I hate having to adjust clothing let alone a costume in the middle of the day.
Bad Wolf’s color scheme is in the tan/beige/sand color scheme almost like she has been playing around the dust and dirt on Gallifrey for the past few years without washing any of her clothes. For this I simply boiled some black tea bags in a large pot on the stove and let the top soak up the natural colors. After I rinsed it, I used some of the leftover tea bags and rubbed them on to specific spots of the fabric so it didn’t look completely even and more organic like the stain was from a specific event.
"Love Me Tender" was stuck in my head when I ransacked my kitchen to do some distressing. And not the Elvis version like most people would assume. No, I have the Broadway musical ALL SHOOK UP playing on a loop. Not that I don't appreciate the King himself, but I think Jenn Gambatese has such a lovely voice singing that song. Plus Cheyenne Jackson playing the " Elvis" type lead doesn't hurt...
Now that you all know I am a major theatre nerd (even if the show is considered a flop) I posted these shots to show how I distressed the edges of the "lacy dress". I can't remember the last time I used the meat tenderizer, for well, meat.
The Moment’s attire is a little rugged so I had to do some major distressing. Not much else to explain other than random tears and holes and make sure you try to keep it random so nothing looks too deliberate. Basically just try to make your intentional destruction look like it happened naturally over time.
Since my sewing skills are not that strong, I didn’t want to attempt to make the lacey top that Billie Piper wore directly under the leather vest. I found this dress at Khol’s on clearance for just $12. Then add a 30% off coupon and imagine how happy I was! Since the dress went down to the knee, I trimmed off the excess and sewed it onto the sleeves. From the picture above you can see how short the sleeves are while in the anniversary episode that layer goes down to the elbow and meeting up with the wrist warmers.
If you look at my previous post I showed the actual shirt/dress (or whatever you want to classify it as) that she worse on the anniversary episode. Hopefully if I find the right fabric I can make a better attempt at this part of the costume.
"According to my research" ( Magic School Bus anyone?) this is what Billie Piper wore as her shirt on top of the asymmetrical dress and underneath the vest. The only version of this top I found to purchase was on ebay but in BLACK! UGH!!!! And as far as I am aware there is no way to treat or bleach fabric from black to white because it usually turns out pink/orange.
My sewing skills are not the greatest so for the first time around doing this costume I didn't want to attempt it and utterly fail. Every now and then when I pass a fabric section in a store I look for these two types. One a basic floral texture and the other an eyelet or other lacy trim to do for the vertical stripes and edging. I hope before my next Con, which is most likely NYCC 2015, that I will be able to find the fabric and construct this piece by hand.
The next few entries will show what I ended up using in lieu of this particular piece and the process I went through distressing and altering it.
KIWI and I posing at work because we are the only ones in a costume that confused every customer. I obviously didn't do my hair for work and I eventually gave up on the wrist warmers because they kept falling out of place. For the most part my customers guessed I was a "hobo", "hot hobo chic", "cindy lauper", "homeless", a literal "material girl" and the the other random ones I have forgotten over time. Only one smart customer guessed Doctor Who mainly because on my visor that I wear I have a TARDIS and Dalek pin...
For Halloween at work I wore my Bad Wolf / Moment costume and this was just a picture I took in the back room on my break. One of the other baristas is a big Whovian and brought in this half tasty treats to share. Said Whovian, whose nickname is KIWI, wore her Tenth Doctor dress. I will have to post the picture of us when I find it. I am only sharing this photo because I know the boots are very particular in this outfit. I think I bought mine online from American Eagle while on clearance. It was amusing to read the reviews before I bought them because most of the customers complained about how they were too slouchy and they kept flopping over. Meanwhile in my head I read that and thought I hit the jackpot because that is what her boots do on the episode...
Although my foot fits, they are a little snug because I waited too long and had to buy a half size smaller than I normally would wear. Since they were on clearance I don't believe they are available anymore.
Another selfie of my Bad Wolf / The Moment cosplay. Yes, this is in my bathroom right before I left for ComiCon. I felt it necessary to document it mainly because I have pin straight hair and I was afraid the hour or so it took me to drive into the city (NYCC) the curls would fall out. But thankfully I did a few test runs the prior week involving hairspray and mousse and several techniques so this look held up the whole day. Unfortunately it was a bitch to wash my hair the next day or two and I probably did so much damage to it because it hasn't been the same since then...
On a side note, I recently saw a video of really successful curls that actually worked on my hair with NO PRODUCT! The girl wrapped a strand of her hair around her finger and then put a piece of tin foil around it. She held the heat of a flat iron around each piece of tin foil and let each one stay wrapped up until they cooled for about 10 minutes. I did this to just my ponytail and then took the hair tie out and it didn't look half bad for only a couple minutes of work. Meanwhile when I tried to curl my hair back in October for this cosplay, it took me over an hour. Did I mention I am not skilled at doing my hair?

SO I have quickly realized that I am not good at the whole internet thing let alone the tumblr thing…
When I originally tried to post some of my cosplay photos I could not figure out how to get my photos loaded into the actual text post because I wanted to add a description or explanation of what I created. So for the time being I have given up on trying to combine the two. Until I figure out how to do that I will just post my words and thoughts first and then the picture I am referring to imidiately after it so that it shows up directly above it.
Above you will see a selfie I took on the car rideover to NYCC. I normally don’t do selfies, but since I actually had my hair done and makeup on (usually I don’t do either) I thought it was justified. And I’m not going to lie, but I thought I looked hot. I am a pretty simple girl on a daily basis when it comes to fashion and general appearance so it says a lot that I am happy that I did a selfie…
P.S. - If anyway has advice on how to write a text post and include a picture in that same post, I would greatly appreciate it!
No Updates!?!
So I know I created this almost a year ago to keep track of my progress of creating the Bad Wolf / The Moment cosplay for NYCC in 2014. Long story short, life got busy and I forgot the password to this account since I am normally not on Tumblr. I'm a PINaholic and not afraid to admit it. Now that I have finally gotten some of my life together, I have made a new password and am ready to update what I did for my last ComiCon.
Unfortunately, I was not able to make the box to carry around with me but I did sew my own dress and get most of the jewelry and accessories right. I took as many process photos as I could and a few on the show floor, but no professional photo shoots. Fingers crossed for next year though!
Since I have a background in carpentry, I am determined to make the box from scratch. After I got home from work today I put together the 4 main sides basically making a prism. My goal is to make the bottom and top strong enough to sit on because even though it's not a chair and the most dangerous weapon in the galaxy WHY CAN'T IT BE BOTH???? I would also like to make of the 6 sides open on a hinge that way I can store my phone, wallet, merch, etc. while walking around with just the Galaxy Eater and not a backpack slung over my shoulder.
Pictures soon to come. I promise this time!
p.s. - A while back I spilled several things on the keyboard of this laptop. In doing so a few keys now stick together so don't freak out on me if something is off. The main issue I have is when I hit the SHIFT key it somehow connects with the spacebar therefore adding one too many spaces where there should not be. Oh well! It could be worse....
Had to reblog for the NJ love!
