Politics
For a while on tumblr/twitter Iâve seen posts talking about the moment they were radicalized. Iâve never been able to pinpoint any one momentâprobably because (as always) I was thinking about it too literally: There has never been a moment where everything flipped on its head at once, and âradicalizationâ has been a (perhaps mortifyingly) gradual process. But I suspect thatâs actually the case for most people.
(âRadicalizationâ because itâs fucking bonkers that itâs âradicalâ to yearn and strive for a society with compassion as its foundation.)
Anyway, I finally remembered my own moment. I thought it was 9th grade literature, but now Iâm less sure. But it was a documentary about working moms receiving welfare.
There was one mom who finally got on welfare, and she was so relieved because she could finally afford to feed her kids. Meeting the minimum requirements for life meant she could have time and energy and bandwidth to look for a steady job. And she did! Things never looked brighter.
But because she was working, her monthly income surpassed the maximum threshold, and she was disqualified from welfare. Suddenly, she was right back where she startedâarguably worse than where she startedâbecause she was struggling to afford what she previously could with welfare.
People against welfare and social safety nets will argue that she no longer needed the benefits; her new job was sufficient; taxpayers shouldnât have to back her largess. And god, what a laughable, infuriating thought. There was no largess. She went from stretching food stamps to stretching her paycheck. Daycare became too expensive to justify working. She had to fall back to her old support system because right when she broke the waterâs surface and could breathe, she was shoved right back under.
I was 14. I hadnât studied a lick of economics. My biggest priority was playing MapleStory. But I was so disturbed that someone with even a mite of political power could hear this womanâs storyâhow all she wanted was her kids to be fed and sheltered and she was more than eager to put in the work and sacrifice for itâand still believe that the system is fair.
I didnât need to question it, years later, when I heard for the first time: âThe cruelty is the point.â

Interactive Fiction Community Raffle for Palestine!
Over 50 authors and artists from the Interactive Fiction community here on tumblr have come together to offer an array of prizes for a focused donation drive! We are aiming to raise as much money as possible for five families who are currently trying to evacuate Gaza. These fundraisers have been vetted by @/el-shab-hussein and @/nabulsi (thank you for your hard work!)
RULES:
You MUST donate a minimum of âŹ5/$5 USD to one of these five fundraisers to qualify for a ticket. These are the currencies the GFMs are in (3 in euro, 2 in USD). We chose this amount because it is the minimum GFM allows and we are hoping to encourage as many donations as possible. Please be mindful that GFM does not show the conversion rate if you're donating outside your currency.
Donating once to all five GFMs will get you five tickets. And for each extra 5 you donate, you will get an extra ticket. (ie donating 10 to one GFM gets you 2 tickets, 15 gets you 3, etc.)
There are two tiers we will be pulling prizes from: one tier for writing, and one tier for art. When you submit your proof of donation, you will be asked to specify which tier you want your ticket to go towards. If you are submitting for more than one ticket, you will specify the tiers for each ticket-- you can spread them out between both tiers or put them all towards one.
You will be required to share a receipt/proof of donation via uploading a picture through google forms. We will not be handling any money. You are donating directly to the GFMs, and then showing us proof that you have done so. Please include the GFM and the amount you've donated in the screenshot you upload. We are only taking donations starting from June 7th onward.
We plan to raffle off all possible prizes using a random generator. Once the drive concludes on the 21st, we'll take a few days to gather up & organize the tickets and draw names, and then we will be in touch with winners both on tumblr and via email.
You can find the full list of contributors and prizes here.
Please understand that these prizes are pulled blind and assigned at random. You cannot pick or choose which writer/IF or artist you get. It is completely randomized. You get what you get-- even if you aren't familiar with the writer or their game. Artists and authors also have the right to refuse your request at their discretion. Please be respectful and remember that our main goal and focus here is fundraising for these families.
Abdullah Mohammed and his family
Mohammed Bardaweel and his family
Bilal Salah's family
Suad and her family
Firas Salem and his family
We encourage you to share these families and their fundraisers here and elsewhere. We're hoping by focusing our efforts we can really make a big impact for all of them.

Getting pinned to the wall by a beautiful girl named centrifugal force
My friend explained the spoon theory to our DM and he was like âohhh so itâs like when youâre out of spell slots and you need to take a long rest to regain them allâ and now I keep thinking of myself as being out of spell slots instead of out of spoons
Itâs perfect actually because taking a shower is like a 2nd level task, whereas making an important phone call is a 5th. If youâre out of 5th level task slots, you canât do that phone call. However you can expend higher level slots to take that shower if youâve spent your lower task slots on dishes, eating, and getting dressed.
Browsing social media is a cantrip
I actually say this all the time!
Also if you donât finish a long rest (ie sleep well, taking your meds as directed etc) you do not regain spell slots and the next day youâre working with what you had left over from yesterday
there are also ritual spells ! where if youâre allowed enough time and a comfortable, quiet environment you might be able to accomplish something without loosing a spell slot ! đ
I love the additions here
And there are some spells youâre never going to be able to cast, because your class doesnât allow for it. Sure, you can maybe level up to the point where you can take a feat and learn one or two of spells - if youâre in a campaign that allows feats - but for the most part, if itâs not on your list, itâs not on your list, and thatâs all there is to it. No matter how simple it seems to someone else, or how useful it would be to you.

Writing Exercises for Stretching Your Style Muscles
Thereâs a lot of writing advice on the internet, and a lot of writing prompts, but something I see relatively little of is an idea of how to actually practice.Â
The thing about learning a skill is that it requires practice â but practicing will only get you so far if youâre just doing the same thing over and over. you might get better at doing that specific thing, but it can seem really difficult to get over a specific hurdle to accomplish some new thing youâve never tried. I think a really common frustration is wanting to do a thing, and knowing what your end goal looks like, but not knowing actually how to accomplish it.Â
So thatâs where practicing specific skills can really help you to feel more comfortable with your abilities.Â
Here are some skills exercises I recommend experimenting with to gain proficiency and comfort in writing things.Â
ââ
Write the Same Scene from Multiple POVsÂ
Write a scene in 3rd person POV. Then go back and rewrite it from scratch in 1st person. Repeat for a 3rd person omniscient. Go deeper than just swapping out pronouns. Think: How does this scene change if Iâm writing through the eyes of a single character vs over their shoulder? How does this scene change if Iâm narrating the events through Character B instead of Character A?Â
â-
Write a Scene in Present Tense
Present tense bumps up the immediacy level of whatever youâre writing. I think it also helps to break you from more passive sentence constructions. Try taking a scene youâve written and rewrite it in present tense. Combine it with the above â try switching a 3rd person past to 1st person present, or even try writing in 2nd person.Â
ââ
Try Mimicking Another Writerâs StyleÂ
Sit down with a piece of writing from an author you enjoy, and pay attention to the writing itself. Ignore the plot and characters and story elements â look at just the nuts and bolts of vocabulary choices and sentence construction. Try to pick it apart. Is there a specific way the author tends to use commas? Certain words, or types of words, that they use more often? Longer sentences or shorter ones? Longer paragraphs or short? How is white space handled?Â
Study that and make yourself a little cheat sheet if thatâs helpful to you. Then try writing a short piece â just a couple paragraphs, even â in their writing style.Â
â-
Describe an Entire Scene Without Using Visual DescriptionÂ
Imagine youâre writing a blind character, if it helps, or someone whoâs been blindfolded. Describe a whole scene built entirely around the way things sound, smell, taste, feel. Try to make it clear whatâs happening through description alone.Â
ââ
Eliminate All Words like âThoughtâ or âFeltâÂ
Write in deep-3rd or 1st person without any filter words. Make a characterâs opinions and emotions obvious through the way things are being described without explicitly saying what theyâre thinking or feeling. If you struggle with this, it might be easier to start in first person â write as a diary entry or even a Tumblr post from that personâs perspective â and then try it in 3rd person after youâve had a bit of practice.Â
ââ-
Set Yourself a Specific Goal, and Write a Drabble to Achieve itÂ
When I wrote âHappy Ending,â my entire goal was to write something that was highly descriptive in the most viscerally gross way possible. When I wrote âMothman,â it was an exercise in writing something sexualized without explicitly being sexual, in the most disturbing way possible.Â
This is an exercise in word choice. Itâs an excuse to bust out your thesaurus, not to sound fancy, but to nail a specific meaning. Itâs also an exercise in choosing what details to focus on and which to exclude.Â
One way to approach this exercise is to describe something common and mundane that youâve experienced, and write it in several different ways. Letâs say, eating a sandwich. How can you make eating a sandwich sound sexy? How can you make it sound disgusting? Which details do you focus on, and which do you omit? What words do you use to evoke the meaning youâre looking for?Â
âââââââââââââââââââââ
I hope these writing exercises give you some inspiration on things to try out to flex your creative wings a bit!Â
