honestly⦠bi women and lesbians share a vast majority of our experiences. this is the way it is, the way itās been, and the way itās going to be. this is fact. weāre in the same class of women whoāve refused to remain or be heterosexual.
that said, we do have unique experiences, and thatās okay, too. we donāt share every nuance, which is fine. part of solidarity and compassionate listening is letting each other talk about these nuances without weaponizing it against one another. diverse social stigmas and other experiences of women whoāve abandoned and escaped heterosexuality arenāt and shouldnāt be made fodder for intra fighting. our pain should be heard and understood. start encouraging compassionate listening.
āi hear you, and iām here for you.ā as opposed to āyeah, you deal with that but ~i~ deal with this.ā we all deal with everything simultaneously, especially those who are also of color or trans. your pain isnāt invalid just because someone else is also experiencing pain.
a lot of this in-fighting could be solved with compassion, but also knowing when to check your own pain. if youāre hurting, you donāt get to take that hurt out on someone else. you need to claim your pain, sit with it, and find out how to make peace with it yourself. your pain is not a weapon to use against someone else who exists in a similar reality as you.
date a selkie, but donāt hide her cloak. let her go home and visit her family now and then, knowing that sheāll come back and hang her seal cloak in the closet like she always does. trust is important.
The first time she lets the redhead take her home, sheās diligent about hiding her cloak. She folds it carefully against tears and rips and abrasions, and hides it in a sea cave whose entrance is concealed by the tide.
She does the same, the second and third and fourth times, careful, wary, mindful of her motherās lessons. Remembers the way her motherās hands had chafed on her soft cheeks, rough with cooking and cleaning for her fisherman husband, the way her motherās peat-dark eyes had been tense and harsh with the lesson.
āMind me, Niahm. Never let them find your cloak.ā
The way her motherās mouth had curved, a sickle of dissatisfaction and relief and envy, as she had escaped into the waves.
So she minds her motherās lesson, and she takes care with her cloak.
Would that she had taken as much care with her heart.
The fifth time, she wears the cloak to the girlās door, clutched about her throat, dripping along the darkened lanes.
She enters the home, welcomed with soft kisses and gentle touches and kindling passion. She drapes the cloak, artful in her carelessness, across an old wooden chair, the one that creaks and tilts slightly if you donāt sit just right.
When she wakes, in the wee hours of the morning, even before her lover, the cloak still rests, supple and dappled by the sea, on the back of the chair.
She frowns into the softening dawn, dons the cloak, and returns to the sea.
And again, the sixth time. And the seventh.
The eighth time, she finally breaks, prickling and hurt with longing, gripping a handful of russet hair in her hand, firm with emphasis.
āSurely you know what I am,ā she says to her lover, the cool froth of sea foam and the call of gulls curling around her voice.
āOf course,ā her lover responds, soft and tender in the dawnlight, throat arched willingly, pale as the inner whorls of a shell. āYou taste of the sea,ā the girl whispers, reverently.
She shakes her loverās head gently, fingers tangled still in russet locks. āWhy?ā she demands. āWhy wonāt you keep me?ā
A long silence that waits and fills, like a tidepool, stretches between them. Cool as a current. Deep as the Channel.
Her loverās eyes are dark and tender. āMust I trap you to keep you, my heart? Is that the shape of love that you desire?ā
She sinks into the thought, struck and stymied, remembering her motherās harsh hands, her cold eyes. Her hand eases into russet waves, caresses where her grip had punished. Her lips press cool and damp as the sea against the arching curve of her loverās shoulder. āWhat shape of love will you give to me?ā
The answer is easy, quick, certain. āMyself. Only myself, whenever you should wish it. Your cloak by the door, your body in my bed, and the freedom to go, whenever you must. As long as you wish.ā
Itās not an answer a fisherman could ever give, nor would think to.
The ninth time, she hangs her cloak by the door, draped in careful dappled folds next to a drying oilskin jacket.

Walk into your kitchen at 3am and this wizard is waiting for you, having drunk your beer and sampled, but disliked, your potato chips, hasnāt done the dishes, and he isnāt happy
What do you do?
āReally, Carl? Really? Christ, I knew the breakup with Cindy was bad-but not THIS bad! Howād you even get in my house? Why are the Utz all over the floor? Wh- how did you get in my house!?ā
āDamn your foolās mind, Randy, the mists of dream still you know my Amulet of Saros allows me passage through all portals, physical and arcane. I came here as this apartment provides protection from the mental ravaging of that dark sorceress, Cindy, gods blast her name! Your fermented beverages are all that have kept me from darkness this night, Randy, would you turn me away in this hour of terror?ā

Do not forget the 200 Lakota women and children that were murdered.
A friend and I were having a discussion about gun violence and such, probably about 2-3 years ago, and he asked me, āwhat do you think the largest mass murder was in us historyā and I was like, āVirginia Tech right?ā
And he said, āWounded Knee. People like to think of it as some war theater, like it was a battle, but hundreds of innocent native Americans lost their lives for no reason than the bloodthirst of a couple white soldiers jacked into a frenzy.ā
I always forget Wounded Knee. I think everyone else does too.
Enrollment for 2018 Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) starts on November 1 and ends on December 15. The current administration has cut the funds to announce when people can enroll. Please reblog and #Resist
they have also scheduled some 12-hour āmaintenance sessionsā to occur on sundays during the enrollment period so be aware of those as well.
Also thereās one scheduled for the first night so be aware of that. Theyāre basically doing everything in their power to make it as difficult as possible so young and healthy people donāt bother signing up in an effort to kill the program that way. Please donāt let that happen spread this around and sign up.
Oh damn, thanks to my former employer Iāll probably need to do this.

i just heard someone out in the hallway go āomae wa mo shinderuā and then someone screamed āNO!!!ā and there was a loud smack
I need people to understand that the viral onion article thatās going around has been posted five timesĀ over the years, always verbatim except for the name of the city and number of dead.
trans disposability is so normalized that
1 most lgbt people, including other trans women, participate in it
2 its almost always impossible to call out a distinct instance of it because it always gets narrativized as legitimate, so instead you have to look for broad multi-year patterns of people being excluded or kicked out over minutiae
3 it would honestly be hard to change without getting cis to recognize how they constantly fundamentally dehumanize and devalue trans women
4 every interaction is, for a trans woman, a terrifying negotiation for the continued potential to have social connection, making social interactions constantly traumatizing and banishing any possible sense of comfort or community
5 structurally formative as a repetitive trauma to trans women in such a way that we either reflexively overwork to please anyone around us or have breakdowns of social detachment, but that our very personality and social performance is always contingent on the ways we might be cruelly banished
6 a matter of life or death for us since we are often cut off from our families, have little access to work, and often donāt have access to any normal routes of community inclusion due to⦠the fact that weāre disposable in every space. its a situation that through recursive looping escalates into a crisis
like⦠itās bad for trans women, really bad, on a level that non-trans women still seem barely capable of acknowledging or grasping
itās so deeply telling how when trans women try to say āhey, you viewing us as abject freaks and men is transmisogynyā or ātrans lesbians are really lesbiansā that so many cis women will instantly go to āso you think itās transphobic that I donāt like DICK?!!ā
i just stumbled on a post that laid out this issue in very clear terms and explained it very nicely to cis people, yet _still_ a endless mass of people were responding by going ābut i donāt want dickā. like, itās physically impossible to get cis women to stop seeing us as a hybrid of sexual object with no personhood, secretly men, and innate rapist. you can talk till youāre blue in the face and theyāll just keep pretending itās physically impossible to treat you like a human being or engage in good faith
Being an active participant in fandom requires a certain level of self-regulating in order to be a healthy activity.Ā It requires the ability to sayĀ āNot for me,ā or āNot today,ā and walk away.
We can have conversations about patterns we see in fanworks. We can discuss how we portray characters and relationships, how to effectively convey what we want to in writing, how to sensitively approach representations of marginalized characters. But having those conversations productively requires that we approach each other in good faith, and it requires the ability to self-regulateāincluding recognizing that often there is no hard line, no black and white answer, and we wonāt always come to the same conclusions.
It requires an understanding up front that eliminating all fanworks we donāt care for is not the end goal of these conversations.
Iāll give a personal example. There is a ship that deeply, viscerally upsets me in like 95% of its iterations. I can explain why I donāt like it if asked. Iāve written about why I donāt think itās handled well in canon.
And if I wanted toāif I wanted toāI could make a very convincing-sounding argument for why that ship is objectively bad and wrongĀ and no one should ship it.Ā Not because thatās objectively right, mind you, but because Iām good at arguing. I could slap that together in like⦠ten minutes, probably.
I donāt do that. If I vent about it on my own blog, itās as infrequently as I can manage, because I do my best to avoid the content that upsets me.Ā I donāt seek it out to get riled up about it. I donāt seek out content that upsets me, read it in its entirety, and then leave angry comments and send my friends to harass the author. I donāt choose a high-profile writer for the content I donāt like and engage in a targeted campaign of harassment against them all while claiming to be addressing a general problem.
If you are deliberately seeking out content that you know will upset you and reading it anyway and then feeling that you need to take those bad feelings out on the creator, you are not taking care of yourself. You are not engaging in healthy behavior or productive coping mechanisms. You are not keeping yourselfĀ safe, and you are not helping to make fandom safer for others. You are not engaging in good faith.
If you find that you do this and you canāt seem to stop, you may need to take some kind of further steps up to and including taking a break from fandom. Iām serious. Iāve taken breaks myself for that exact reason. Thereās no shame in it.Ā
Please monitor your own ability to self-regulate. Please actively evaluate whether or not you are engaging in healthy and productive behavior, for yourself and for others.
If you are deliberately seeking out content that you know will upset you and reading it anyway and then feeling that you need to take those bad feelings out on the creator, you are not taking care of yourself.Ā
