What do you think of the statement that some people have made, “Kpop is rooted in antiblackness”(something along those lines if not exactly that)?
It’s true.
It does appropriate from Black music and culture so call outs on that are definitely legit. I’m also aware that Black K-Pop fans face anti-blackness from other fans too so that needs to be addressed.
This isn’t to say that it can’t exist though, that there isn’t any value to it, that it doesn’t give people hope and inspiration, or any of these other good things. It’s just that it does take from Black music and culture. And I’m sure there are lots of instances of anti-blackness (I’m not into K-Pop so I wouldn’t know what those instances are) so that needs to be addressed too.
I don’t believe that K-Pop needs to go away (it can’t anyway) but rather, it can be improved. It’s not all about appropriation of Black music and culture though as it does have its own sounds and culture infused in it.
