Drogon to complete the set of Dany with her babies
"You're too big for that now, sweetling."
Dany and Viserion portrait because I miss my girls
She stroked Rhaegal. The green dragon closed his teeth around the meat of her hand and nipped hard
Decided to make matching portraits for the remaining of Dany's children, so here's Rhaegal
Book Rhaenyra and Laena doodles
Dany in Qarth
This crown must be HEAVY, especially in the front part, so I added more jewelry hanging at both sides to sort of balance the weight.
Daemon with Rhaena / Daemon with Baela
when i say i am a daenerys apologist what i mean is I’M SORRY she’s better than your fave in anything you could imagine, I’M SORRY she has everything you wish your fave had, I’M SORRY she’s an icon and a symbol of asoiaf, okay, I APOLOGIZE your fave simply is not on the same level as her, I’M SORRY
i think it’s pretty hypocritical to say “i support neither rhaenyra nor aegon. both were terrible rulers” because while that’s true to an extent (however rhaenyra was clearly the better option between the two as she was actually trained to rule from the age of seven and had actual experience in governance, having ruled dragonstone for more than a decade seemingly perfectly fine as nothing in particular regarding her supposed incompetency is brought up. not to mention the empty treasury and the civil war her half brother started were the root of her problems in her short lived reign, both of which were not her fault) it still doesn’t change that rhaenyra was viserys’ heir as he made clear time and time again, yet still they passed over her, hid her father’s death from her and left his body to rot for days, most likely poisoned her and caused her to have a miscarriage, killed her son in a peace mission and then dismissed his and his brother’s deaths as “bastard blood shed at war”. rhaenyra being an incompetent ruler despite being the heir is a flaw of monarchy. so unless one is advocating for a full democracy by the end of asoiaf i just don’t see how that criticism holds up, the readers are obviously meant to at the very least sympathize with her and her cause.
Not to mention that so much more terrible rulers like Aegon the Unworthy and Maegor the Cruel who were certified terrible guys even before they were kings were not denied their crown and were considered official monarchs but Rhaenyra was reduced to a princess.
Maegor was a literal usurper. His nephew Aegon was supposed to be the king and Viserys after him, and he killed them both, the latter of whom he tortured for days before finally killing. The times some characters (looking at you, Stannis 👀) and some real people call Rhaenyra the usurper makes me want to bang my head against the wall. Like at least have the decency to acknowledge that Aegon was the one who took hold of a throne that was by all rights Rhaenyra’s, that too through treachery. It was made so obvious. Not only did the Greens start the war through their conspiracy to crown Aegon secretly but also they shed the first blood, the first blood being Beesbury's and the more specific first royal blood shed being Luke's, the former being someone who simply stood up for Rhaenyra and unjustly killed for that and the latter killed in a peace mission which was completely unprovoked.
And also the fact that the three monarchs who sat on the throne through usurpation, that is Maegor, Aegon II and Robert Baratheon, did not leave behind any legitimate child to sit on the throne after them. Maegor having died childless, Aegon II having died leaving behind a daughter who later died as well thus ending his entire bloodline and Robert who left behind bastards and "trueborn" children who are not really his at all. And all of them died so prematurely, two of them confirmed killed, and at the worst time of their lives, when either the whole kingdom or at least half of the kingdom wage war against them while the other half doesn't do anything to help and keep on winning or they are just whoring and drinking themselves to death while their kingdom is taking loans after loans. Makes me think George clearly doesn't favour usurpers?
And I loved that how you mentioned Viserys’s death. When I read that part in F&B, it made my blood boil. The Greens, especially Alicent, Aegon and Aemond, did not seem concerned at all that their husband and father just died and immediately started plotting? And how Alicent as soon as she learned of her husband’s death, did not feel any grief and started arranging for his death to remain secret and his corpse to rot while she plans to put her son on the throne? Makes you question if she ever even loved Viserys. That's terrible. No wonder there was that rumour that the Greens poisoned Viserys and I would not even be surprised if it's true. So that event alone (and of course also the misogyny) made me stan Rhaenyra out of spite. Her being an actual better and more competent ruler and the fact that all these Blacks - Daemon, Jace, Corlys, Rhaenys, Cregan Stark, Black Aly, Sabitha Frey, Aegon the Younger, Viserys II, Addam, Alyn, Baela, Rhaena and the Lads exist gave me even more reason to stan them.
welcome to asoiaf fandom where main characters must give their arcs to other characters, people are pro-slaver sympathizers, disregard canon for show/fanon material, believe little girls are villians and hate magic despite it being an epic fantasy series
Dany’s outfits
Sort of based on these posts of ASOIAF clothing of Cersei and the Dornish. I was pretty bummed that there wasn’t a Dany one, so I created it.

What we know that Dany knows of her ancestors, dragonlore and history
As I was rereading ASOIAF, I made it my goal to compile all* the book passages demonstrating either certain key attributes of Daenerys Targaryen (e.g. that she’s compassionate and empathetic) or aspects of hers that are usually overblown (e.g. that she’s violent and ambitious). Doing such a task may seem exaggerated, but I’d argue it’s not, for many, many misconceptions about Dany have become widespread in light of the show’s final season’s events (and even before).
It must be acknowledged that it can be tricky to reference, say, ADWD passages to counter-argument how she was depicted in season eight (which allegedly follows ADOS events). Dany will have had plenty of character development in the span of two books. However, whatever happens to Dany in the next two books, I would argue that there is more than enough material to conclude that her show counterpart was made to fall for flaws that she (for the most part) never had and actions that she (for the most part) would never take.
Another objection to the purpose of these lists is that Game of Thrones is different from A Song of Ice and Fire and should be analyzed on its own, which is a fair point. However, the show is also an adaptation of these books, which begs the questions: why did they change Dany’s character? Why did they overfocus on negative traits of hers or depicted them as negative when they weren’t supposed to be or gave her negative traits that were never hers to begin with? Another fact that undermines the show=/=books argument is that most people think that the show’s ending will be the books’, albeit only in broad strokes and in different circumstances. As a result, people’s perception of Dany is inevitably influenced by the show, which is a shame.
Show!Dany’s downfall in season eight is a great study in how powerful women can be demonized for a variety of reasons. One of the most blatant ones, I would argue, is that, throughout the seasons, the show’s writers downplayed or stripped Dany of almost all the characteristics of her book counterpart (compassion, self-awareness, intelligence, frugalness, lightheartedness, etc) in order to paint her as a regal and stoic Strong Female Character only to have that status turn back against her in the end (i.e., key moments where we were supposed to be awed by her strength, like her burning of the khals, have had their meanings retconned to signal her heel-turn). That’d bothered me in previous seasons, but I never thought they’d use their mischaracterization of her to deliberately portray her in an overly negative light (especially because most of her scenes were designed for us to root for her or see her as triumphant), so I tried not to think much about it. But then, in season eight, she’s no longer determined, she’s ambitious. She no longer takes action, she’s reckless and violent. She no longer cares about her people, she only wants their devotion and compliance. She’s no longer a product of the Westerosi pseufeudalistic system, she’s a tyrant. She’s no longer idealistic, she’s deluded. She doesn’t want to conquer only Westeros, she wants to conquer the entire world. She’s no longer focused, she’s mad. As if the evidence for these accusations didn’t primarily come from material that had already oversimplified Dany to begin with. As if it didn’t come from material whose meaning/significance was retroactively changed to support their writing of her heel-turn. Dany was never just a Strong Female Character in the books, but the show’s writers often reduced her to that aspect so she’d be their feminist icon and then changed it in the last minute so we’d despise her in the end for the very status that once made us be on her side.
I hope these lists can be useful for whoever wants to find book passages to defend Dany’s character in analysis or even conversations.
*Well, at least all the passages that I could find.
Also, people may interpret certain passages differently and then come up with a different collection of passages, so I’m not arguing that this list is completely objective (nor that there could ever be one).
Also, some passages have been cut short according to whether they were, IMO, relevant to the specific topic of the list they’re in, so the context surrounding them may not always be clear (always read the books!). Many of them appear in different lists, sometimes fully cited, sometimes not.
Here goes the lists of book passages featuring the key moments of Dany’s main relationships (so far).
Dany and her dragons
Dany and Jorah
Dany and Drogo
Dany and Hizdahr
Dany and Missandei
Dany and Viserys
Dany and Daario
Dany and Barristan
someone: daenerys isn’t relevant to the main story.
meanwhile daenerys: *literally sees the red wedding while tripping on shade of the evening*
Didn't she also hear her brother Rhaegar say the name of the book series they're in?
And heard a wolf howl and was filled with sadness when Jon was murdered.
And Ser Barristan Selmy, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard who served for decades under 3 Westerosi Kings, traveled to Essos and is now working for her.
Daenerys is the only main character who is currently a contender for the Iron Throne.
She has a prophecy stating that she will probably marry one of the main characters (Jon). Her other prophecies also happen to mention and connect her to many other characters (Tyrion, Euron, Stannis, Young Griff and Jon Connington).
And she is the only character that perfectly fits the Azor Ahai/Prince that was promised prophecy, which is a prophecy that concerns saving the world from the Others, which is the main threat of the books.
I used to get really mad at this statement, until I realized that "Daenerys is irrelevant" is not something that is born out of any analysis of the text (or even the show), it's the exact opposite of that.
Whether they realize or not, what these people are truly saying is that they wish that Daenerys were irrelevant, and that her story ended in Essos, or that it were over already, but sadly for them, it is not and it won't be anytime soon. Daenerys is the one character who just cannot be erased from the narrative, even in fanfiction. Even when they write an AU when she is dead already, there's always another character who gets her arc instead, because, if nothing else, somebody needs to both wake the dragons from stone and to hear all the Prophecies about the final battle against the Others. The whole plot just falls apart if someone is not there to fill Dany's role.
Even when villainaized, she is still vital to the story, and season 8 was a very clear example of that: if anything, everyone became a secondary character to her descent into madness. There were very, very few scenes that were not about Daenerys, and in fact, the Starks spent more time talking about her than anything else.
Daenerys' story is vital to the narrative. She is the fire in the Ice and Fire. Even if it turns out that the Fire is a malevolent force (which would be extremely weird at this point in my opinion), it doesn't erase her importance. To say otherwise is plainly wrong and it only makes antis look stupid.
if you need some better requests, Dany x Margaery pretty please
they totally braid each others hair
