@baizenotbinaries
For real though. I don't really like Mark Allen, but I feel so bad for him missing that black. I can't imagine how he's feeling right now.
Jesus, that semifinal had everything. Tied up, to match ball, a black off its spot missed, a decider, a protester shouting during the decider, the right player winning. Now we will either have a 22 year old become the second Chinese player to win the World Championship, a year after the first, or one of the most polarizing players win again for the second, having first won when his opponent was less than 2 years old.
Okay, obviously a little gutted that my darling Zhao Xintong is out, but as long as it's not Mark Allen if be genuinely happy with anyone else winning. John Higgins seems impossible not to like, great dad energy, incredible play, and just seems like a very nice guy. Shaun Murphy is a bit of an ass, but I find him sorta charming. He's pretty good at owning up to his shit when he says something stupid, and I think he gets a bad rap for no reason other than anything he says being viewed as "Murphy at it again." Then there is sweet baby Wu Yize, what's not to like? Incredible talent at such a young age, fantastic to watch, he's got flair and personality, always showing up with a new hairstyle (I miss his gay little mullet). Mark Allen just exudes white cishet male mediocrity, love an Ulster accent but even that can't make up for the ick I get from him.
Lord, if this man shows up in that gayass little cravat and goes on the break the Crucible Curse I'm not sure I'll ever recover.
I s2g if I don't get to finish watching this game because I have to do a stat c section I'm gonna be so mad at a literal newborn 🤣
World Champs
I have been struggling with collecting my thoughts on the Worlds. Every time I start drafting a post, I get stuck partway through, unsure of where I want to take it.
I've ben musing on the class of '92. All three made it to the quarter-finals, 2 are going on to the semis. In some ways its awe inspiring to see them at the top three decades into their careers. In others its tiresome to see them still here.
I'm new to snooker and not British, so I had no clue who these guys were until I started getting into it. I get the nostalgia, and nostalgia is important to sports. But so is new and exciting talent rising up, and it would be great to see more of that and less Ronnie. I know that its not their job to step aside when they are still capable of out preforming younger players, its those younger players job to step up and beat them. That is happening more and more, but when we are talking about a group of players like them, it will take time. It would be nice if that time was sooner, and it could feel like snooker is in a new era rather than saddled with the nostalgia of decades long gone.
There is of course Judd as well. Aside from his unfortunate last name, I find it hard to get excited about him. He is of course very good, but he's another white dude from England. He doesn't strike me as terribly interesting off the table. He peddles crypto, he has the vibes of your friends boyfriend who is senior project manager at some big company, thinks he's very funny and charming, but everyone dreads sitting next to him at dinner.
People say a lot of the Chinese players are robotic, and we don't see their personalities. This is mostly just because the media can't be bothered to take any interest in them. They will have Tai translate for post match interviews sure, but why can't they hire a bilingual pundit? They don't even make an effort to pronounce their names right half the time. They talk up Stan Moody, who has incredibly strong "Do you know who my father is?" vibes, and put not effort in getting to know or promoting more talented young players because they aren't British.
The future of snooker is international, and it depends on doing away with xenophobia and reliance on nostalgia. There will be a Chinese World Champion in the next 5 years (hopefully its this year!), and at least one if not two of the class of '92 will retire. My only hope is that when this happens, all the people who scream in fear over the future of snooker and lack of strong young English players, and who insist that Ronnie is what keeps the sport afloat, will in fact stop watching and fuck off once that happens. Snooker doesn't need you.
Snooker Growth
My dream is to win the lottery and start a small business where I go to the UK and Ireland a couple times a year and load up a box van full of shitty old snooker tables that people are selling cheap or free. I then take them to a shipping container and send them back to the US. I then fly home and meet them, do a light rehab on them, then go around to bars and community centers and offer them for free. The idea being that the more visible snooker is in the us, the more people will start playing, and thus the standard will rise.
Short of that, an idea just came to me. I am at a bar in Seattle, there is no American Sportsball on right now so the bartender put on some Sumo Wrestling, which seems to to be their niche sport of interest. Basically everyone at the bar has been very engaged in this tournament. It got me thinking that one of the barriers to snooker growing in the US is the lack of exposure. If we got some bartenders on board, or at least got them to not care enough to pull up a snooker match on youtube when there is nothing else happening, that could bring a lot of new people in. A lot of Americans don't even know enough about snooker to know its a cue sport. Seeing it randomly on a Saturday evening on TV at a bar could be enough to get them to look for the closest snooker club. That leads to them playing more often, getting their kids into it, and before you know it, we have an American Hendry on the tour.
The bar I'm at is somewhat niche in that it does English style cask ales (as opposed to the standard tap, carbonated US style) . Its my first time here, but I will be back, not only for the beer but to start my indoctrination of the bartenders here. I think that with this place being somewhat British adjacent its a good place to start, with Irish bars being another good next step.
I may be a couple beers deep, but I do think this logic is sound. If you expose more people to snooker, more people will get into it.
The Seltephant in the Room
I want to address the Matt Selt situation. Here is a video, but brief summary, Matt lost his shit after losing a match. A lot has been discussed about the event's that night, and I'll get into those a bit, but mostly I want to talk about the reaction to it.
The next morning Matt was on Hendry's Cue Tips channel, in what seemed to be a pre planned appearance. They got into the incident right away and it was.....really bad. First, Hendry laughs about it as he brings it up, they both repeatedly refer to Atermijs Zizins as "the kid", Matt goes on about how badly Zizins missed his intended shot, implies that the official who he shouted "shut up!" at was out of order for calling him out, we find out that all the banging off camera was him smashing his cue case, destroying his cue. And what's Hendry's response? To laugh with him, excuse his abuse of the ref, and accept the excuses he made.
A week or so later, the incident is addressed on the OneFourSeven podcast. Shaun Murphy makes similar excuses and repeats Matt's line about it being his concession so it didn't really matter.
On both episodes, the topic of players showing more emotion came up. But I really wonder what the line would be if Selt had fluked match ball and Zizins had started crying? Or what if it was Mink? Hendry gave Muruphy shit for clapping for his opponent once, has talked about the need for a killer attitude. Has told the story a few times on his channel about his dad telling him to pick his head up when he was losing a match and had his head down in sorrow. So is it really that players should be more emotional or is it that saying that makes an excuse for Selt's behavior?
There is a big difference between being emotional and the level of anger shown by Matt here. One comes from a place of passion and dedication, the other from a sense of entitlement. Matt felt entitled to that match and to the position in other tournaments he lost by losing that frame. In the same way that Murphy threw a tantrum losing to Si when he was still an amateur, Matt felt that it was his opponents job to lose to him.
It's worth noting that in both circumstances, they lost to a player who is young and foreign. I highly doubt Shaun would have said that, and that Matt would have done that if it was Stan Moody. This is the intersection of toxic masculinity and racism and xenophobia.
We know that snooker had a gender problem. But players like Shaun and Hendry can pay all the lip service they want to women in snooker, but if they aren't backing it up by calling out toxic masculinity and excusing it 'cause he's a good bloke' then anything they say about diversity in the sport is just PR.
I hear players say that the sport needs to appeal to younger players by making it more exciting and changing the dress code because young people don't want to wear bowties. I'd counter that a much bigger thing that young people don't want is to have an established player scream at you when you win a big match. Being around people like him, and a tour full of respected players that enable him is whats aversive, not a waistcoat.
Hello Tumblr
I had originally made an instagram with this name as a way to isolate my feed from the horrors of the world and give my mind an escape by only seeing snooker content. It's worked well for that, but every now and then there are snooker topics I want to talk about either more in depth than instagram works for (which isn't saying much, see my photography main to see my thoughts on insta), or I simply don't have a picture to attach, or its a little smutty and lets be honest, that is what tumblr does best.
I've got a few fic ideas that I may be working on, as well as some musings on the state of the tour and masculinity (looking at you Matt Selt), and so many thoughts on growing the game as a queer dominated sport in North America.
All this to say, expect a lot here, from thirsty posts about players, to rants about shittier parts of the game, to brag posts if I make a good break at the club, to master plans to get take over the tour with a bunch of queer North Americans. I also want to merge my two hobbies and work on some film photography of snooker, those posts will likely end up on my main @cest-fromage, as well as here.
I can assure you this will not be a high quality blog, follow at your own risk.
