🕊️ Nadin’s Hope: A Mother, A Memory, A Future

Hello, my name is Nadin I’m from Gaza. I’m a graphic design graduate. I’m a wife. And now — I’m a mother.

I finished my design studies just before the war began. I had dreams of starting a small design studio, of making art that told stories. I used to think about colors, fonts, sketches. I used to think about the future.

Then the war came. And the future became something we tried to hold onto, moment by moment.

On October 22, 2023, I was pregnant when a missile destroyed my husband’s family home. 25 members of our family were killed — his mother, his siblings, his nieces and nephews, children. Entire branches of a family tree gone in seconds.

We were displaced twice after that. Everything we had disappeared — home, safety, routine, rest.

A few weeks later, I gave birth to our daughter. There was no crib. No stillness. No celebration.

But she came into the world quietly and beautifully. And in her eyes, I saw something I hadn’t felt in weeks: life that still wanted to grow.

Now, I spend my days holding her and trying to build a world around her that doesn’t shake with explosions.

We don’t know what comes next. There is no clear path. We are walking toward the unknown, step by step — with our daughter in our arms and hope as our guide.

Long answer: I have recently read Paradise Lost and become very delusional.

Before taking the fruit, Eve asks Adam if they can do their tasks separately. Adam objects because earlier he was informed that despite her being physically his greater (in terms of appearance), Eve is spiritually and intellectually deficient compared to him < Milton’s words not mine…

What is faith, love, virtue unassaid Alone, without exterior help sustained?

Unassayed? Very inch resting. Eve is using a word (assaid/assayed) that has heavy connotations with eating/consuming food. Milton kind of drenches Eve with prose relating to tasting. I wonder if something important happens in the story where Eve eats something. Anyways.

I see a lot of Yuljan in Paradise Lost’s Eve. Yuljan is a superficially superior being in comparison to a normal human being the way Eve is said to be visually superior to Adam. But God does not care about appearances, and no amount of skill or talent is going to make Yuljan a real human.

What about Takkan?

The forbidden fruit is knowledge of good and evil and eating it would make Eve like God.

Takkan’s existence as an actual human being that Yuljan’s current existence (as a parasite) brings him out of the ignorance that his comfortable existence is morally neutral. Consuming him would make Yuljan a human.

Takkan being the forbidden fruit/apple also turns him into an object in the narrative. I don’t think the apple really has a mind of its own, and Takkan doesn’t have any way to have any agency over his own existence for most of the story (I’m still working on what happens once Yuljan is expelled from his body).

Back to virtue unassaid. Eve tells Adam that her character cannot be known without being tested and then immediately gets tested and fails. Yuljan, up until he learns of Takkan’s existence is also living a pretty pious life. He’s living life unassaid with a lot of exterior help sustained (Tamar). Takkan is his first main test of morality, and he fails it.

This isn’t a perfect one-to-one, obviously. Eve knew about the apple the whole time, but Yuljan only finds out about Takkan after thinking his body is his own for a long time. There’s also a few other issues with this analogy that I’m too lazy to type out, but it’s definitely something I like thinking about. There’s something about gender in here that’s interesting but I’m getting sleepy and you weren't looking for an essay.

Anyways, back to the question, I think a cool way to nod to this would be Takkan poisoning himself. Yuljan actively (instead of passively) choosing to possess him/consume him would be Eve eating the apple. Maybe Takkan’s last meal before he poisons himself could be some apple slices or something. idk go crazy.

Sorry if this is a mess, I wanted to write this as quickly as possible if this is for the ss lol. I may go back and edit this later.

The bombs never stopped. Every night, I held my children close as the sky rained fire. The sound of explosions mixed with the cries of mothers searching for their babies in the darkness. I covered my children, whispering words of comfort, but how do you comfort a child who is terrified of dying in their sleep?

We had to leave. We walked away from everything—our home, our memories, the warmth of our life before. My children left behind their favorite toys, their books, their safe space. Now, we have nothing.

No home.

No food.

No clean water.

No way out.

I went to buy sugar the other day. It cost $20 for just a kilo. Food is disappearing, and the little that remains is impossible to afford. Every day, I fight to find just enough to keep my children alive.

I am exhausted. I am scared. I need your help.

I never imagined I would have to beg for my family’s survival. But today, I am.
