Part of me is kind of amused that the books almost vindicate Blunt and MI6? It's been a while since I've read the books, but while they make sure to let you know what they're doing is immoral and evil, and how badly it affects Alex…the boy is the only person who prevents Europe from becoming a plague ridden, irradiated warland, among other things, because he's the only one who was able to stop all the plots of the books. Granted, this is because of the nature of these books, where it'd be pretty boring if the protagonist weren't able to change anything, but still.

i agree that there’s a bit of narrative dissonance going on, but it is worth pointing out that, a lot of the time, the only reason why mi6 even ‘need’ alex at all is because of their own incompetency/other government corruption. in stormbreaker, for instance, ian’s murder alone should have been enough to have sayle arrested and the launch cancelled; it was the prime minister’s insistence on preserving a political gain that necessitated further investigation. in point blanc, it’s pretty obvious from even one conversation with grief and stellenbosch that they’re nazis, but even if it wasn’t alex pressed the emergency move-out button VERY early on in the book only to be ignored because blunt thought it was out of spite; he didn’t need to go through the whole snowboarding on an ironing board sequence. besides which, some of the point blanc boys are as old as 16; they absolutely could have had a newly qualified 20/21 year old go undercover in alex’s stead. skeleton key is trickier, since alex actually indirectly volunteers himself for that one (obviously jones, blunt and the cia take advantage of the triad situation, but the wimbledon sidequest that sparked that whole thing off was something alex agreed to with no strings attached), but the only reason sarov doesn’t achieve his goal is because he shoots himself; i suppose alex’s presence drove him to that point, but there was very little that active mi6/cia interference did to save the day there. eagle strike could have been avoided and easily halted if anyone bothered to believe alex at all; scorpia is just as much a mess of mi6’s own making as it is scorpia’s themselves. this distinction does, unfortunately, disappear in the second half of the series (although there are still a few glimpses of it—would scorpia have the resource of ash as a double agent in snakehead if blunt hadn’t treated him so cruelly after the failure of mdina?), but i think it is worth pointing out that there are, in fact, alternatives to alex in the first half of the series, or at least alternatives that wouldn’t require using him for so long, and mi6 will not take them. it’s alex who doesn’t have a choice, not them. that’s less of a vindication and more of an indictment, imo.
