Gay Liberation as a movement has been dead since the 90s, and I think that may be the issue

White gays people have within their minds separated their struggles from the global struggle for liberation and as a result they refuse to fight for the liberation of other peoples like Black Americans, Immigrants, or Palestine

Like that is how we get the gay people who support Trump or still parade around Kamala after the election or how gay people can support the Israeli occupation. The watering down of gay liberation to gay rights was to remove the intersectionality and radicalism of the movement.

It's borderline offensive that this post blames the change in the gay movement to "the 90's" without going into what happened just before then.

This is because the AIDS crisis happened and gay liberation was viewed as an impractical, pie-in-the-sky dream that didn't meet the real-world needs of LGBTQ people.

When AIDS happened, gay people's concerns went from "How do we liberate every oppressed person in the world?" and more "How do I make sure I get my healthcare and can't get fired from my job for being LGBTQ?" AIDS meant that practical concerns like inheritance, health insurance, and hospital visitation rights became more important than a centuries-old conflict in the Middle East. This is how same-sex marriage went from being viewed as cowardly and assimilationist to the defining LGBTQ rights issue of the early 2000s.

Intersectionality is a bane on left-wing activism. It demands that if someone has an opinion on one hot-button political issue, they have to have the right position on all issues. "I won't work with you on gay rights unless you agree with me on who gets to control this plot of land in the Middle East!" The harsh truth is that no successful civil rights movement has ever fought for every oppressed group's rights at the same time. Even Martin Luther King threw some people, including gay people, under the bus.

This is why marginalized groups gravitate towards mainstream liberal groups, who seek to improve the existing system rather than demand the whole thing be torn down and something new be built in its place before squabbling over what "new" should look like. This is why while liberal groups are diverse, far-left groups are whiter than the RNC. Only the most privileged have the luxury of waiting for their ideal solution promoted by ideologically uniform people.

Most people aren't won over by the promise that they'll get their rights but only after they slay a dragon.

It's weird as hell to try to tie queer liberation to Palestine, of all places, and get mad that gay people support Israel.

There are gay people in Israel. It's the only country in the region where you won't get killed or arrested for it. There are gay people getting asylum from Israel. Including, shocker, Palestinians. Because Hamas absolutely kills people for being gay or trans. There are queer people in every country, even when it's not safe to be queer, and demanding that they share your political views is alienating AF. A lot of queer people are conservative and a ton are racist.

Tying gay liberation to a whole different country is ludicrous. Gay liberation in Israel looks different than gay liberation in the USA. Yes, queer lib needs to focus on people of color and disabled people, but it makes no sense to tie that to a different place altogether. It doesn't make sense for people in other countries to tie their liberation to the USA, either.

Making Palestine the OmniCause isn't helping you. It's actively harming your movement. Even among people like me who do support Palestine and want it to be a separate country. It's fucking weird to insert your pet cause where it doesn't belong.

Cause in point: I know people who will swear you can't be a leftist if you're not vegan. Which obviously alienates everyone who isn't a vegan and doesn't think you need to be put animal rights next to everything else. Those people don't have friends. They don't make coalitions and don't achieve anything.
