Found this on my hard disk. I drew it because a lot of people confused my Balthier/Basch with Gladio/Ignis.
On the Hunt, Part 2
“Here kitty kitty,”
Balthius knelt to the ground motioning for the large cat like creature to move towards him. It was the last thing on his list to hunt for. A mountain beast. It didn’t exactly specify which beast for him to kill so Balthius figured this giant cat would be an easy mark for him to finish quickly and get back to Berrod before his week deadline was up. The cat turned to him seemingly tilting his head as if it was confused on my this man was even here in the first place.
It turned and moved closer to Balthius licking its fangs preparing for its next meal that somehow appeared before it.
“That’s right,” Balthius stayed on one knee smirking at the beast. “Come over here and get this knuckle sandwich.”
The cat suddenly stopped and stared at the kneeling monk. Balthius tilted his head and squinted at the beast. They continued staring at each other in a stalemate. The warm wind blowing between them, neither one flinching or tearing eyes off one another.
It happened in the blink of an eye. The cat lurched its head upwards, letting out a loud roar. Before Balthius could react, a large ball of flame suddenly appeared around him before exploding, releasing an intense burst of fire sending the monk flying back and off the nearby cliff. He reached out grabbing the ledge before he could fall to his early grave. His skin stung and ached. It was obvious to him that he was going to have a few major burns from this. The pain wasn’t too intense though it was enough for Balthius to try to take his time on getting back up on the cliff.
As the monk struggled below, the beast approached the ledge. It sniffed the air trying to catch the scent of its prey. It looked down to see fingers grasping at the ledge. In a swift motion, the beast lurched its claws down, sinking them into the monk’s arm. He screamed in pain. It was bad enough his body felt like it was on fire, but now the hunter became the hunted. The beast used its claws as leverage dragging the monk up from the edge. Balthius had no choice but to painfully ride the ascent up the cliff. His arms were pouring blood where the claws were sunk into his skin.
Once the man reached the top, the beast released him from its grasp. Balthius let out another yelp of pain, gasping as he cradled his bleeding arms. The beast didn’t let up. It wasn’t trying to save Balthus, it was only trying not to lose its dinner. It raised its claws ready to slash at the food in front of him. Balthius wasn’t quite ready to retaliate though he had little choice at this point. The claws hacked forward, Balthius rolled to the side barely dodging the attack. He swept his leg knocking the two of the beast’s legs causing it to fall flat on its belly.
Quickly, Balthius stood up, still holding one of his bleeding arms, and curb stomped the beast. It yelped in pain rolling on its back exposing its belly. The monk opened his third, lightning aether sparked and arced around his feet and as quick as the beast released his explosion, Balthius raised his foot high then brought it down on the exposed beast. It didn’t make a sound, the attack tore through its ribs to its organs killing it instantly.
The beast lay still in front of him. Balthius hobbled over to the body and sat in front of it laying his head back on it. He sat there letting the pain subside a bit and revel in his victory. It was a close call. Too close as far as the monk was concerned but at the very least, his list was done and he could finally get back home, back to Berrod, and back to training. Balthius felt a sharp poke at the back of his head. Looking back, he could see a bit of bone poking out from the body. It reminded him that he had to take the bones from this thing. He sighed, taking off his gi and ripping it half. He wrapped one half on his right arm and wrapped the other half on his left. It wasn’t the best solution for his still bleeding arms but it was good enough for him to get his quarry and return home.
As he began to rip and pull at the skin to get the bones, he started to imagine what this “uniform” was going to look like. For all the trouble this hunt was, he hoped it was worth it.

On the Hunt Part 1
Balthius scratched the back of his head as he wandered the Lochs. He had been out here long enough that the sun had long set and the moon was high in the sky. Finding a high cliff, he stepped to the edge and took in a wide view of the land before him. After finally getting back into his monk training, Berrod had given him a quest to hunt down several monsters and gather materials to craft, what Balthius called, his monk “uniform”. The coeurl and black bear were easy enough to fight, though skinning them for their pelts was a bit of a problem. When Balthius knelt down to skin the beasts, the sight of its blood on the knife caused his hand to tremble and quake while his mind was flooded with visions of the past until the knife finally fell from his grasp. In the end, he ended up just taking the carcasses to a leather worker and had them skin them for him.
Even in the dark of night, he was finally able to find his quarry. The Phoebad seemed to swim across the ground under him, it’s large hands sort of swaying as it moved.
“Found you,” Balthius stretched his arms getting ready for a brawl. It was just a giant slump of salt, how hard of a fight could it be? With a leap, he aimed a punch down on the monster but the Phoebad was further away than the monk thought causing him to land hard on a knee, his fist disappearing into the sand. He looked up at the Phoebad grinning sheepishly.
Shattering the Shield
Trouble follows the Astral Advent and its members around like a bad gil coin.
The white crystal from the beach party had started causing trouble once more. Left under the care of the Arcanist’s Guild, the mages were performing some minor aetherial tests upon it, when one in particular attempted to cast a Protect spell upon it to shield it for storage. The power of the spell was magnified beyond anything that had previously been seen and was considered unbreakable. Thus, were the Agents called in to assist with breaking the barrier down.
It seemed a fair number of people were interested in assisting, almost twenty people in total, and N’hara had a feeling a few of them were there to try and smash the damned thing to bits, but nobody could do anything unless the shield was broken. The arcanist responsible for casting the spell, a man named Hartsald, escorted the group to a secured location near Summerford Farms. The barrier itself was roughly the size of a chocobo and shaped as a tesseract, something N’hara was clearly not anticipating.
The first attempt to damage the shield was met with a violent physical repelling of Zaius’s punch. The second attempt was a vortex of air, which the barrier responded by attuning itself to ice to better resist the element. It was proposed that assaulting the barrier with an element to which the current shield was weak to would allow them to break it. With wind used, thanks to Dylan, fire was next. Aulen, Martin, and Edari Garani provided the fire, which retaliated with wind.
N’hara, Sejad Moon, and a strange mage supplied the ice, which did not retaliate, but opened itself up to physical attacks while it quickly attuned to earth. Cerina, Aulen, Balthius, Ciel, and Lian’dr Garani joined N’hara in bombarding the barrier with physical attacks.
The pulse of aether that was released by the shattering Protect spell caused the barriers that the rest of the group had used for defense against them. Reks, Dylan, and Suwan were trapped in barriers of water, which slowly began to fill and threaten to drown them. Sejad was encased in a shield of unaspected aether, and Sergei was locked in his own Heart of Stone, along with another barrier that encased the rest of the group, save Cerina, Balthius, and N’hara, who had been physically close to the crystal at the time.
Weapons of all types were brought to bear against the barriers, shattering them one at a time to free their allies from their entrapment.
Once the shield surrounding Sergei had fallen, the highlander retrieved the crystal, using his skill at withholding the use of aether to maintain a measure of control over the artifact. With the knowledge that the crystal would be strongly protected by such a barrier, the guild decided to stash it in a back room somewhere and leave it to gather dust, unable to affect the outside world.
The arrangement seemed acceptable for the moment, and with the crystal in hand, Sergei led the group back to Limsa Lominsa for proper storage this time around.
As the group walked back, N’hara’s attention couldn’t help but be pulled back towards the strange mage in a black cloak that had assisted them, assisted him with the ice attack. He knew a good number of people who worked for the Astral Agents and the number of people who were aware of the crystal, aware of the barrier, and were a miqo’te with purple fur was a dangerously small list…

Ruminations II: On Fear and Endurance
One’s introduction to the Art is a spiritual experience which resonates forever in the halls of the temple of memory. To feel your own heart beating with that of the land, to feel the very energies of the spirit of the fight enter you and flow through you… that is an awakening, a first breath of cool air, so refreshing that the truth of our newfound understanding cannot be denied. And so we hold the opening of our first chakra in special reverence. It is this cornerstone, this first step on the path, which betrays us in the end.
