Scarecrow fake fan over here I need you to specify bc like I most likely know which crane this is but Iām only thinking abt the Arkham games and not a specific issue šš
I know BTAS is your favourite, but what other Scarecrows do you also love and why?
I really love a good fun Scarecrow. I like a Scarecrow who isnāt afraid (pun intended hyuck hyuck) to take drastic measures and be a total drama queen (to put it informally lol).
Masters of Fear Scarecrow, Year One Scarecrow, Shadow of The Bat Scarecrow (Knightfall), Arkham, Lego, and Tim Saleās Scarecrows are some of my favorites! Really hard to pick favorites though.
Jonathan is a man who favors the idea of a romantic relationship rather than the reality of one. He loves the innate power that comes with a partner who is of some statusāan individual who can inadvertently help him rise above. He cares little for those who canāt benefit him in some way, and cares even less for their own desires at times.
Take Sherry Squires ā he truly only liked the idea of her. He liked the fantasy of being with the āmost popularā girl in school to compensate for the bullying heād been tormented with. His affections were, ultimately, shallow. He claims āitā was all heād ever wanted when she leaned in to him, not that āsheā was all heād ever wanted, after all.
He is emotionally stagnant and cannot cope with negative feelings without resorting to violence or revenge. If he feels as if his partner betrayed him in some way, their relationship would come to a rather melodramatic ending fairly quickly.
He likes someone he can insert himself intoāa woman, or a man who has deep turmoil of their own. Someone who holds the same rage heād been bottling up since his high school years. That, and someone intelligent. He wonāt bother with an individual who holds no interest in literature and the finer things in lifeāhe needs someone who can keep up with him intellectually.
With handwriting as elegant and formal as his, he only deems it a satisfactory ego boost to write and send his partner love letters, signed by various aliases to give some extra personal flair. His words are flowery and poetic, and heād much rather prefer a sonnet than holding hands. In his letters, his more intimate, true feelings show. Heād be simply enraged if they didnāt keep them.
He doesnāt mind sitting silently with the person heās fond of. Playing chess, cooking, or organizing āthingsā are his ideal date ideas. He canāt afford to take his partner out, but might begrudgingly take them somewhere on a special occasion.
Doesnāt tolerate insults in relation to his partner for a multitude of reasons. An insult to his ābetter halfā is an insult to him, and therefore an insult to the master of fear himself. Some part of him, additionally, canāt stand seeing someone heās fond of go through the same treatment heād been through. He wonāt dare have himself humiliated again, and the same can thankfully be applied to his love.
Heās got a quick temper, but is quick to āapologizeā in his own wayāwith overcompensating acts of affection. He cares, but isnāt sure how to care about something that doesnāt revolve around his own desires. He can be stubborn, but his stubbornness is only as strong as his need for his partner.
The more his partner stays with him, the fonder his heart grows. The more he catches himself thinking of them without the need for something specific.
Wants to know what his love fears the most, though he hasnāt been able to bring himself to use fear toxin. He knows thatāworst caseāthe user could die of a heart attack, and he canāt take such a risk. Heād much rather get his hands dirty finding out what it is his partner has nightmares aboutāand it can be promised heās willing to do what it takes in the name of science.
You've said that BTAS Jonathan is super gentlemanly toward a partner, and it made me wonder which other versions of the character are also super gentlemanly.
Honestly, I can't really imagine any Jonathan Crane not opening the car door for his partner or doing other stuff like that. He's just so sweet, y'know?
EXCUSE TO TALK ABOHT BTAS CRANE š„¹š„¹
I agree! I think that all Cranes have their own reservations, but BTAS Crane specifically (especially given the time periodāI feel like nobody talks about that!) would be the utmost gentleman. Heās extremely affectionate towards those he loves (hugging and comforting Molly Randall, calling Harley an endearing name and breaking his anger just to smile and wave at her, etc), which makes his hatred and outward demeanor all the more jarring in some cases.
Heās one of the Cranes that I could imagine displaying his love with massive gestures. Heās already extremely theatrical. Given his artistic ability I wouldnāt put it past him to even draw the person who has stolen his affections. Itās already confirmed as it was that he has a massive love of the arts, ignoring his canonical artistic ability.
And (just thought of this while typing LOL sorry totally talking my head off) in a Batman Adventures comic he lets his dopey henchman (I believe Mr. Wednesday?) go steal things from the giftshop for himself (as long as heās āquick about itā). His soft spot does not go unnoticed.
Rant about how lovely BTAS Scarecrow is aside, I could certainly imagine a lot of Cranes being extremely romantic, almost to an overwhelming, suffocating point. Many Cranes see themselves as a god (HM: Knightfall) and theyād likely extend that view onto a partner, because he wouldnāt have picked someone ālesser thanā him. If heās not opening a door for you, heās shouting at one of his āignorant goonsā to do so, thatās for sure. In his eyes you shouldnāt have to do anything remotely undesirable, but it certainly takes a lot for him to feel that way (once again, depending on the Crane. I could see BTAS Crane being a huge romantic, especially with his love for the arts.)
