i really wanted to liveblog this 2 years ago but i couldn't find it anywhere. but now i found it :)
i loved to watch this movie with my sister and her friend when we were kids. they'd be like "wow liana and alexa's friendship is just like us :)" meanwhile i'd sit in the corner being their platonic third wheel
it doesn't matter that i'm watching with the sound off bc i watched this movie so many times as a kid that i can hear it all very clearly in my head
this version has english and chinese text?? both at once???
the visuals are so aggressively 2008 (i mean this as a compliment)
this movie was the first time i heard the word "backstabber" and i had to quickly infer that the word does not refer to literal stabbing
to this day i cannot gauge what her reaction is supposed to mean. what is this face
ALSO we never find out what stacey and her friend fought over. i know why they didn't specify, it's to try to make it more "relatable" to a general audience, but like. it kind of matters what they fought over
this might've been my first indicator that i wanted to live in a cottage in the woods
it's so funny because this movie is about music and flowers and dogs which are all things i hated/hate. but somehow, with this movie, i never minded
i can't tell if the dialogue is really bad or if i'm just too familiar with it so it sounds cringe to me because i associate it with childhood. also the line delivery is pretty slow and clear which increases the cringiness, but that was the kind of line delivery i needed at that age, something soothing and easy to understand

in retrospect, the "help a starving old lady in exchange for a magic mirror" plotline is very contrived. especially considering we never see the old lady again??
i was never sure if this compliment was sincere or not because Melody's singing is a bit... much

idk why i loved this idiot serpent who set their house on fire and made them homeless. well, it was an accident. he didn't do it on purpose
waitt she still wore her evil clothes even before she became evil? lol
so nothing happened to make her evil. she just randomly became evil one day
you know what, even more than the main characters' cottage in the woods, where i REALLY wanted to live was lydia's evil cave. i'd say this was one of the first indicators that there was something wrong with me, except it was really more like the 9th or 10th.

i'm just remembering we used to have toys of the two dogs from this movie, except they didn't look ANYTHING like the dogs in the movie. so i was always like "which one is sparkles and which one is lily??" bc i had no clue and i don't know that the toy manufacturers had any clue either

anyway i think this is the best song in the movie. barbie movies are really good at doing that thing where a singer starts off slow and nervous but then picks up speed and puts on a great performance
gotta love this song too (it's so bad it's good) but could they at least wait a few moments? the girls JUST finished their song and these guys come to sour the mood

I just realized that Princess and the Pauper was Barbie’s first musical. It’s so crazy to me that Mattel was like hmm let’s fuck around and add some songs to our movie, and then dropped the best movie soundtrack of the 2000s.
serious question: if barbie plays anneliese and erika, does ken play both julian and king dominick? just one of them? who plays the other guy? I NEED ANSWERS!!!

bear with me-
1) barbie and ken broke up in 2004 (the year of P&P release)
2) ken is blond, majority of male leads are brunette
3) in the blooper reel of pegasus (2005), barbie exchanges emails with aidan, implying that they met on set and thus, he cannot be ken
4) ken is never presented as an actor, even after the establishment of the barbie and her friends (summer, nikki, teresa, raquelle) as actresses in the movies.
but that still leaves the question: who pays julian and dominic? is it the same person in a wig and makeup? are they two different actors? who are these people?
Thinking about this again. We've seen Julian's actor [character model] appear in minor roles in 12 Dancing Princesses, Island Princess, and Diamond Castle, but whoever played Dominick seemed never to return to set.
Unless we look backwards in time. This is entirely in the realm of headcanon, but Prince Eric from Nutcracker looks a whole lot like a younger King Dominic. Further, Prince Daniel from Swan Lake bears a striking resemblance to Julian. (Stefan from Rapunzel also has a similar face, but I believe him to be a different actor entirely.)
