Behold the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina). This robust reptile, found throughout the eastern and central United States, as well as certain regions of southern Canada, can grow to exceed 70 lbs (31.8 kg) in weight. Its diet includes nearly anything it can catch: Birds, small mammals, fish, and aquatic vegetation are all on the menu. The common snapping turtle is also relatively long- lived, with some individuals surviving for 30 years in the wild, and even longer in captivity.

I mean, yes, but the NYT is just a new refrain of a very, very old song. This idea that it's just "normal" for rural poor people (and in this mindset, all rural people are poor) to be unrepentant bigots is ... incredibly old.

Like, I grew up in rural PA, in the Poconos — it's a lot more built up now than it was when I grew up there, but even now it's like the stereotype of 'rural tourist area' — and then lived in Lancaster County for a while, and when I moved to Philly, this idea that everybody I knew at home was a stupid, bigoted hick was... pervasive. That was an ancient song when I first heard it decades ago.

it is also widely accepted that women get raises less often because they don't ask as much as men. this is objectively not true.

every time we talk about gender discrimination, people look for an explanation that starts with women's behavior.

and every fucking time, actual research shows that across the board, women actually don't behave that differently from men.

women aren't diagnosed less often with autism due to "presenting differently". it's gendered medical neglect, and weaponized diagnoses disproportionately applied to women (e.g. BPD, HPD, bipolar, etc.)
