I've been cultivating an alliance with the crows living nearby for years. I give them peanuts and now I have a pair that will sit on the deck every day and call to me until I bring the goodies. Today, for the first time, they left me a special shiny gift by their water dish.

Part of being Thornish is caring for our animal brothers and sisters. Also being a good steward and warden of the lands around us. Animals, birds, trees and mountains are all alive and sentient and we should remember that we are not superior to them...often times I think they are far superior to us.

“If you honor the Thornish way and want to live on that good road then you are welcome to do that. Anyone who wants to live according to our traditions in that respect can do this. However, if they want to learn the deepest teachings they need to do it directly, in person, from someone who has been fully initiated.”

“So if the tradition is secret how would anyone outside learn about it and want to take on the lifestyle?”

“The old society lodges were secret, yes, but nowadays we are much more open—at least some of our ways are more open,” Alfred said.

November 1st. Founder’s Day.

It’s a cool autumn day with snow gleaming on the mountain tops. I stand on a little footbridge over a small stream, between two worlds, at the beginning of the new year.

For me it will be a year of teaching and learning, a year of sharing and, I hope, of meeting like-minded people.

Deep breath. The scent of crisp brown leaves and forest loam.

Sixty-some years ago, the founders of the Thornish ways created a pagan tradition that has remained mostly hidden. Until now.

This year I will open the gates. I will share my journey on the Thornish path, giving you a look at our traditions in a deeply personal way. You will see the Thornish ways as a Learner would, sitting beside a fire with Thornish masters.

You may find something that you have been seeking for a long time. I did.
