You know, it just hit me for the first time how much Georgiana is held over Lizzy’s head for the first part of the book in such a cruel way—as a paragon of accomplishment, as the destined of Mr. Bingley over Jane, even as one of Lady Catherine’s circle to be made much of. Apart from Wickham’s lies about her, a separate thing, her presence in the story is spectral to Lizzy in a very un-fun way. But then at Pemberley one of the first things Darcy does is make it clear that he wants Lizzy to meet Georgiana and, just as much, he wants her to meet Lizzy. All those other ways Georgiana was used by people to hurt and make Lizzy feel small and foolish, even just as a contrast of privilege and wealth, just fade away in the warmth of how Darcy feels and behaves with respect to his sister and Lizzy. Kills me.
