I'm just imagining his mother dying when he was around 8 and he was alone alot afterwards because his father was a knight. He didn't really develop any social skills because all the kids thought he was weird and wouldn't let him play. The one who took care of him was an elderly neighbor and she would always tell him stories about wild adventures. She ended up dying when he was 13 and his father was killed in action about a year or two before the knights tournament. He was a very lonely child and that was why he was so happy to not only be acknowledged by someone but also gained his first friend. That's also why even though he's young and seems incapable he can actually take care of himself on the road and during the tournament because he's used to taking care of himself.
